IM turns me off.
Posted: 4/28/2009 4:09:41 PM
Sorry to find the IM facility no longer in use, it was a very useful tool and I for one will miss it, I will no longer be using the site as oftern now that facility is gone! It was useful to be able to type in real time and use web cam to see who I was talking to, as I have found the photo's people put on this site are not always an uptodate veiw of what they actually look like! The web cam does not lie, where as the pictures do. Sorry it's gone!! :-(

This is not intended to be an insult, but the IM feature is basically the only thing that this site had going for it. I am even willing to pay a certain amount for IM, but there really is no point to using this site if this feature is not enabled.

I would strongly suggest that the company find another form of IM to utilize ASAP, because I certainly won't be using POF until it's back on.

IM was a big plus
Posted: 4/28/2009 4:40:54 PM
I didn't get the impression that the IM feature was discontinued due to any type of customer dissatisfaction, or because of people hating it. It seemed that POF and the company that allows the IM to be used had some differences, but that was the extent that I heard.

I aggree that POF should try to get an IM feature back, but I wouldn't jump to conclusions regarding the reason. Obviously, people enjoyed the IM as probably the best feature on here.

No IM devalues PoF!
Posted: 4/28/2009 4:42:41 PM
The only problem I had with the IM was that it was too slow to connect to other users. The civil and polite thing is really rubbish, because you don't have to talk to someone if you don't want to, and you can block users.

Why does everyone have their IM turned off?
Posted: 4/28/2009 4:43:37 PM
The owner of POF isn't smarter than me. I'd of been able to keep the site up and offer the chat feature.

IM for cash........I say no!!!
Posted: 4/28/2009 4:53:06 PM
In answer to you're question, I would not be prepaired to pay for it, I will just stop using the site! I was not impressed when they rolled out the 'Serious members badge', anyone with half a brain should realize all that was about was extracting cash from the gullible. All that being said, I think it is a real shame to loose the IM facility, it was good to be able to type in real time, and to be able to see who you were typing to on the web cam. Photo's can oftern be misleading. :-(

With all due respect..I completely disagree with your assesment that the site is more effective without the IM feature. This is one of the unique things about the site that set it apart. I appreciate the site, however, I really feel this is a mistake. Speaking to the folks that express that the IM was a hassle and intrusive etc., please be careful not to listen to this voice only, after all there was the option in the settings to turn off the ability to IM on an individuals profile, so the offense was completely avoidable by a simple setting update. Seems the enhancement of a quality IM only enhanced the site and certainly was viewed that way by this member.

Thanks for all your hard work

I will probably be like many who will voice their displeasure over POF losing the IM service. I used it regularly when I come to the site but since losing it, the site is not the same.

I am hoping the Mods/Owners find some other IM service to provide both the free AND paid users cause I don't want to totally give up on the site cause of it but the site has become less appealing since the IM left.

What I find remarkably telling is that in the week or so since Admin has posted, there's been 20 pages of discussion without one word from the owner. He seems quite happy in his "It's my toy I can break it if I want" attitude without listening to the people that actually MAKE the site.

Personally the IM that was on the site was incredibly retarded. It rarely worked well. But there are so many amazing products that are open source (removing the 'cost of the product' arguement.)

I've read every page of responses, hoping to find 'admin' had posted. That to me would show that he actually WANTS to know what his members (paid and otherwise), have to say.

This place isn't a democracy. In the case where there is an owner and subscribers, it is what the owner wants that goes. Pure logic really. But it's the height of rudeness for Admin to not even change the advertising for the site. False advertising isn't appealing. I won't say that I'd be happy to pay for an IM service. There are other sites that offer IM and chat, and I have yet to pay a cent for them.

Of course traffic increased. Everyone wants to know where IM is. They log out, log back in, just to see if it's fixed. False logic with 'removing IM increases traffic'. I'd actually like to see some stats on that. What's been the difference from the first few days it was offline compared to now, a week later.

I know I've spent far less time logged in now that IM is gone.

I agree 100%. Without IM even as it was slow to connect this site has no advantage over my space or face book or anyother social networking site. I personally get too many emails to respond to, so sending receiving and email is a waste of the time anyway. Receiving an im allowed me to talk to the person without digging through the many emails i received. Without IM there is no point to this site. Might as well join match, or any other dating site.

The only reason that I can see that it is favored by the Admin not to have IM on is it causes users to click more on the site, which in turn is just giving them more revenue since more ads are being seen. As a business person I can understand that is ideal but in the end removing functionality like this is just going to cause people to leave the site.

Cost of IM service - not just software licencing
Posted: 4/29/2009 8:30:06 AM

But there are so many amazing products that are open source (removing the 'cost of the product' arguement.)

Total costs for IM and chat include:

Network utilization ("Bandwidth") charges, especially for audio/visual/file transfer features.

Additional MS SQL Servers and databases; keep in mind Markus has appeared to have drank the Micro$oft Kool-Aid
I doubt there's an open-source freeware IM server application which is secure, scalable and robust enough be be useful to PoF which runs on the MS Windows Server platform.
Adobe Macromedia seems to have a patent-lock on that.

User support which for advanced features starts climbing because of end-user firewall and security configuration which make it difficult to have "direct" connections which save on server resources.

Admin time to police the system;
ever since QuantumLink in 1986 there have always been a large number of (mostly)guys who take advantage of the fact the disorderly-conduct, anti-harassment and indecent-exposure laws aren't much applied in cyberspace .
This can cause IM to become a net liability to a site like PoF which doesn't have the staff to monitor user complaints effectively.

Exposure to liability;
while online services starting with CompuServe have always included disclaimers absolving themselves from any kind of liability to their users/customers the courts from time to time have disagreed; even if the online service prevails in a suit there it can cost 10s or 100s of thusands in legal fees to get that favorable decision.

There's also the matter of having to deal with subpoenas from divorce lawyers and police agencies which is yet more time and money.

With all the above factors its not surprising that PoF discontinued the IM service and will never replace it with something "home grown".
I'm sure PoF advert revenues have taken a sharp drop the past 2 years and Markus decided to cut costs by dropping IM.
I think Userplane's poor performance played a factor in his decision too.
AOL (Userplane's owner) since its beginnings has insisted on selling its services to far more people than it can efficiently serve.

Unhelpful is Markus' apparent "Mushroom principle" style of user relationship management. But hey, its *his* system after all.

-Herb

P.S
And I'm going to be a Cassandra and predict:
by end of 2010 AIM and Userplane will go away, Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger will merge and require a yearly or monthly subscription fee for anything beyond bare-bones usage and may even require a credit card as a form of positive ID for "free" users, that is if you can't qualify for a credit card they don't want you .

IM service removed
Posted: 4/29/2009 11:37:26 AM
Hi,

Just want to add to the many others on here, that without IM this site has lost its special edge. It was easy to say a quick hello, then they usually looked at your profile and decided wether to chat to you or not.

I had no problems if they didn't want to talk after all there are "Plenty more fish in the sea"

I do hope it comes back!

Thank you

I don't know about most but for me it help me to get to know someone before exchanging or meeting.. hope that this issue will be cleared up immediately. I enjoyed that service main reason i went with your site thank you for your kind consideration

Um, I understand the problem with the Third Party Vendor with the IM availability, but.... why do you say that the site is so much more effective without it? Do you mean from an administrators point of view its less technical hassles? I can imagine that. I think many of us users however really enjoyed having IMs here. Put my vote in, if another third party IM becomes available, I bet you the majority of your users here would really like that!
Thanks again for your great, free site. I hope your revenue stream models work and this supports you well!

HELLO
What are the chances the chat will return, in percentages?
As others have stated, it's a great way to screen someone before giving them your other screen names to other 3rd party tools.
Quite frankly, unless it is brought back, I am terminating my plentyoffish account.
THANKS.

Something you could do is simply set up an Instant Message account on a different service than you normally use then use that for PoF; if you get a jerk just abandon it and make a different account elsewhere.
In particular AIM is very useful if you need multiple "screen names" .

I don't think that's a decision you should have made alone (or with the other admins). I signed up for this site because of the IM service. I don't like to waste time writing useless emails. If a person isn't going to be available when you say hello to them on an IM, then its pretty much senseless to spend 5-10 minutes pouring your heart into an email that they probably won't answer in the first place. Just my opinion.

Why, Cowboy?
Are all the women sending you unwanted IMs just overwhelming you? Poor buckaroo! Maybe I can help.
Like I told some classless lady--just use the 'block' feature. That'll keep those pushy women away from you.
Just because you don't like something, is no reason to wish it deprived, from someone else. Just say 'NO'.

Why don't you email the admin directly, and express yourself, my dear? At least you'll know he see that. He hasn't posted on the forum, in over a week, as several have said.
