| IM Posted: 4/15/2009 4:22:12 PM | | Damn right its straight to the point and easy! and who cares who owns it, just bring it back! | |
|
| IM Posted: 4/15/2009 4:30:33 PM | I agree 100%. Without IM even as it was slow to connect this site has no advantage over my,space or tag,ged or other social networking site. Girls get too many emails to respond to, so sending an email is 99% of the time a waste anyway. Without IM there is no point to this site. | |
|
| IM Posted: 4/15/2009 4:31:28 PM | | I have to say I agree with the previous poster, it's a really easy way to chat to the friends I've made on here...I don't have to answer it for those I don't want to talk to. And email takes so long!! | |
|
| IM Posted: 4/15/2009 4:32:27 PM | | I would highly recommend that the link to IM someone be put at the bottom of their profile only rather than under random thumbnails! | |
|
| READ ADMINS POST IN THIS THREAD FOLKS!! Posted: 4/15/2009 4:39:33 PM | | How many times does someone have to tell you that it is being discontinued by AOL. The IM feature doesn't belong to POF. Was just made available to POF. | |
|
| IM Posted: 4/15/2009 4:40:38 PM | LOL! I would wager that if on the chance IM does come back its coming via the serious member paid membership as the old app is no longer available. Be very careful what you wish for here as you may just get it. (wink)
I only hope everything else is free. I could care less about IM.
I am curious though for everyone demanding IM be brought back.
Are you willing to pay for it? This is a free site. I dont know of any others that have IM and I have been on several paid sites but not since I found POF honestly.
So this is MY not the admins question. The old IM is gone. He will have to pay for a new one that you are now demanding on a free site. You pay nothing but are demanding a new free IM service? Seems pushy to me for free but...
Are you willing to pay for it as a bonus for a "paid member" via the serious member badge? I am not but how about you IM addicts? What if its $6 a month?
Just curious.

| IM turns me off. Posted: 4/15/2009 4:48:53 PM |
Evidently userplane is being discontinued by AOL, or so i'm told by june 15th. Site usuage is far higher and less idiots when the IM is disabled so i'm going to leave the IM off.
Bless you, Big Fish.
I absolutely hated that annoying pop up IM that wouldn't go away. I'm not one to "IM." There are telephones available for talking.
|
| Why does everyone have their IM turned off? Posted: 4/15/2009 4:50:01 PM | | my guess this is phase one of pof becoming a pay site and slowly forcing us all to pay contrary to horn blowing of being a free site run by one guy all these years... guess his advertising fees are down with the economy... just wish they'd be str8 up to us. | |
|
| looking for new IM Posted: 4/15/2009 4:51:11 PM |
This is a free site. WE might not be paying for this site but it's hardly a hardship for a successful business like pof to do something to make the site more userfriendly. With success comes growth and improvement.
Userplane only worked 33% of the time anyway. I'm asking for an investment in the site's performance to still maintain functionality and have access to (a better) IM as it was a welcome feature.
|
| READ ADMINS POST IN THIS THREAD FOLKS!! Posted: 4/15/2009 5:02:44 PM | Well the admin is not being criticised here about AOL discontinuing the IM application, myself and the other folk here are just voicing our opinion that it should be brought back! Without the IM it does not stand out against any other social networking sites either, like another previous poster said.
and if you pay for anything on a 'FREE DATING SITE' the site is not FREE anymore is it?
|
| looking for new IM Posted: 4/15/2009 5:06:48 PM | I like the IM feature because it allows you to have one-on-one conversations, but Userplane was not reliable. It was slow and sometimes you could not connect at all. I did not use it a lot, but I certainly liked having the option of having an IM conversation with those on my faves' list.
I agree with the other posters who said a new IM feature will become available to those members who pay to be "Preferred" members....I can see that happening.
I have accounts on other dating and social networking sites that I rarely log into and never have I paid one cent to have the option of sending IM messages. I guess it will mean moving to Yahoo or MSN (yuck!!).

Just like all other things in life. The best things are free. Free to the user anyway. Television (until cable anyway) has always been free and a very successful business(paid for by advertisers). Online especially, free has always been the way to a successful business. (Just ask MicroSoft about Internet Explorer, or My,space or, Facebook,or.... ). I've always like POF and I'm hoping they don't fumble the ball on this one. There is tons of possiblity for success and profit that hasn't even begun to be tapped. There is always someone else waiting for a fumble to pick up the ball and run with it. Both Myspc and Fcbk have very good built in messengers. Certainly the same can be done here. No one will pay for IM they will just go elsewhere. I completely agree that the current messenger is annoying because it was slow to initialize. But it is what works for most of us who rather have a conversation rather than writing emails.
|
| looking for new IM Posted: 4/15/2009 5:26:48 PM | | I don't see anything at AOL that indicates they are discontinuing service. | |
|
| |
| looking for new IM Posted: 4/15/2009 5:36:05 PM | Well I've never IM'd anyone as I felt it an intrusion of privacy to do so without asking . I try to be polite on here. Only one lady, whom I quite liked used it and only did so once before leaving the site cos She was fed up with the idiots that harass people. She did say that she found it to be very useful and that with it she could chat much faster and get to know guys much faster than PM's. Many people are reticent to give MSN and many ladies are suspicious of guys that give it. It's a pain to have to block email addresses too. Personally I did like having it there to use just in case, but if it was being used to harass people and keeps people away from the site then i'd rather it not be on here. | |
|
| |
| looking for new IM Posted: 4/15/2009 5:49:24 PM | | The reason a lot of women got fed up with it was because they would get random IM requests from men who did not have the common courtesy to send an email first, which is why a lot of us only allowed people on our faves' lists to send IMs. | |
|
| looking for new IM Posted: 4/15/2009 5:51:40 PM |
I don't see anything at AOL that indicates they are discontinuing service. no one said aol was discontinuing service. AOL owns an application called userplane that POF was using for their IM connections and THAT has been discontinued. I dont know of any other DATING site that has free IM service.

| IM Posted: 4/15/2009 6:00:58 PM | | I'm very disappointed they're trying to limit or discontinue access to IM. It's a very useful feature. "Serious members", no IM, what's next? I'm having serious doubts about this site now and the direction it's headed............ | |
|
| IM Posted: 4/15/2009 6:22:01 PM | Well only serious members on my puter r showing up IM USER so wat the hell is going on cheers | |

| IM Posted: 4/15/2009 6:29:38 PM |
Well only serious members on my puter r showing up IM USER so wat the hell is going on The serious users do not show an IM USER option on my end right now. Everyone is the same.
The admin says he has eliminated the IM option due to the application (userplane) that we used being discontinued by AOL. POF did not own the IM app we were using.
This has NOTHING to do at THIS TIME with being paid or free members

| IM Posted: 4/15/2009 6:38:28 PM | | I personally like the IM function here as it was pretty straight forward if someone did not want to talk to you. Have had lots of good conversations with people and other than a couple of people who I chat with on Messenger I like it better that I am only chatting with people who are on the site and are wanting to chat while they are on the site. | |

| IM turns me off. Posted: 4/15/2009 6:45:20 PM | sucky im is better than no im and how about a chat room feature?
