| IM turns me ON! Posted: 5/9/2009 4:37:12 PM | Datehookup still has the same kind of IM ... free, and I just saw on of the 'upgraded/pay' users profiles where it said IM USER underneath, while all the other pics of users said ONLINE NOW...so just as many though Im expectng you will have to pay to use IM. Hey, you cant complain too much, this is still the best dating site out there, and free for the most part. | |

| IM turns me ON! Posted: 5/9/2009 9:30:47 PM | What happened to this attitude to IM?

Plentyoffish Reels in Unexpected Revenue Stream that makes Userplane Webmessenger Pay for Itself
Plentyoffish, the world’s top free dating site, has always operated under an ad-supported business model, so it immediately took the bite when Userplane introduced a new ad revenue-sharing program.
Within two months of participation, Plentyoffish received a boatload of cash that nearly absorbedthe monthly licensing fee for Userplane Webmessenger™, a leading IM and chat tool featuring both live text and streaming audio/video.
Plentyoffish estimates that within the next six months, its haul of Userplane ad revenue will exceed its licensing costs by about 10 percent – resulting in an IM tool that not only pays for itself, but pays Plentyoffish for using it.
“The Userplane ad program created a new and unexpected revenue stream that brings the cost of Userplane’s IM tools down to free.” – Markus Frind, Plentyoffish Founder and CEO
Little Fish Nets Big Success Plentyoffish, a pioneer in free dating services since 2003, controls more than 80 percent of the free dating market. It’s the most popular dating site in Canada, and a top five dating service in both the United Kingdom and the United States, according to Hitwise. More than 1 million singles flock to the site each day.
Despite its massive success, however, Plentyoffish is still a rather small company. In fact, it has only one employee – its founder, CEO and everyman for every job, Markus Frind.
“Plentyoffish is the only massive dating site run entirely by one person. It’s twice the size of some of my competitors – even though they have 200 employees,” said Frind.
He is committed to making sure that everything the site offers is “100 percent free” – including instant messaging. Plentyoffish began deploying Userplane Webmessenger in 2004 as its IM platform. Today, the site generates more than 100,000 IM sessions and millions of text and audio/video messages every day.
“Our members demand IM and refuse email,” said Frind. “It’s the primary way singles want to communicate. With Userplane, they can use Webcams to make their messages come alive.”
Ad-Supported Makes Plenty of Sense As a free dating site, Plentyoffish creates its revenue strictly from advertising. However, it had never experimented with placing ads directly within Userplane’s IM windows.
In September 2006, Userplane launched a new ad-revenue sharing program for its “integrated install” communities – typically large dating and social networking communities that pay licensing fees for Userplane software. Userplane offered to enable text-based ads within its IM and chat windows, and to splitany resulting revenue.
“Userplane recognized that many of our larger communities are in the process of changing revenue streams, transitioning from subscription-based businesses to ad-supported models,” said Michael Jones, CEO of Userplane and vice president of AOL. “We specifically created this program as an easy, painless way for larger sites to deliver significant advertising revenue with zero effort.”
Plentyoffish joined the program simply by adding a few lines of code to the site. The user experience remains virtually identical, except that unobtrusive text ads now appear in the IM player.
Software That Pays For Itself – And Pays The Site Two short months after Plentyoffish joined the ad-revenue sharing program, it received a Userplane ad check that nearly equaled Userplane’s monthly licensing invoice – canceling out what until then had been Plentyoffish’s second-largest monthly expense.
“The Userplane ad program created a new and unexpected revenue stream that brings the cost of Userplane’s IM tools down to free,” said Frind. “Any time you can eliminate a bill – and get free money at the same time – is a good time.”
Plentyoffish estimates that it could make as much as $20,000 a month from the Userplane ad sharing program – essentially getting paid to continue using the IM software its members enjoy for free.

| Messed up Posted: 5/10/2009 7:14:38 AM | | I truely believe that I.M. should be brought back. I understand the business side of things and hope that there is some comprimise to it. What is truely messed up is that you want your users to post responses to any changes but at the same time you could care less and do not appreciate their concern. I read the oppinions and read your responses and wow, no sympathy. To all of us that help you make this sight successful, show some remorse. | |
|
| ITS NOT THE SAME Posted: 5/10/2009 8:58:44 AM | | I realize that the IM feature does not belong to PLENTY OF FISH. I felt that this site really changed when this feature was discontinued. I found that 98% of messages dont get answered at all on here. On IM there were times you would not get a reply but a lot of times you did and the success rate was much higher in meeting people. I was and am up front about my status both on my profile and I would tell woman everything about me before we went very far on here. That way I was not misleading her. I found by having conversation it was very successful and if the lady could not deal with my situation then we parted ways with no hard feelings. But now since IM is gone it makes it very hard to meet people now and its a shame but I have the feeling it wont matter how many people are unhappy about this feature is gone to the administration of POF. They will do what they want to and they dont care what we think about this at all. Anyway I have no choice but deal with it and move ahead. I t was a good experience and I will continue to use this site as I have enjoyed it but I am sure it wont be the same at all anymore. | |
|
| IM turns me off. Posted: 5/10/2009 10:59:23 AM | It is in my oppinion that the IM part of the site is a good thing if not the best thing of the site. It make comunication more interactive and help people to get to know each other better. | |
|
| IM turns me off. Posted: 5/10/2009 6:59:03 PM | | What's the big deal? Just set up a POF-only MSN account and post the details on your profile. That way you get to have a second email address that you can delete almost everything unless the user mails you on POF first. Does that make sense? I know my idea is good but not too sure how well I explained it lol | |

| POF will soon crumble with no IM Posted: 5/10/2009 9:49:33 PM | I have spent many hours reading through the 22 pages of this thread. The biggest problem I see isn't people being frustrated with no IM. It's the lack of acknowledgement of our (good or bad) feelings from our Admin. The only responces I have seen over the past few days seem to be insultive or critical from the so called moderator. Yes PaClassyLady your right people don't pay attention to the title in threads. They were here to discuss the issue not what the title was. hmmmm you contradict your own name. You are not at all classy no one with class would be so insultive towards others as you have been here. COWBOY you have been no better so stop gloating at someone else getting a hard time.
My understanding of all this (which is what Markus himself should have done) Many (myself included) frustrated from lack of communication and our IM being pulled. Yes it was our IM. No we didn't directly own it, AOL does. They are only discontinuing it simply because Markus has removed the advertising space. They are not discontinuing their service to all, only to him. Markus was making a great deal of money from "USERPLANE" Which he himself admitted on their own site. (yes I went and looked)...google userplane you get the same info i did or visit their site directly.
Markus may have built this site and allowed us to be FREE members. We are the ones that made him what he is today (rich). Without us he would be another nobody and just another gateway number on the internet stream.
DOES HE OWE US FOR A FREE SITE... Darn straight he does. With out us he would not be where he is today.
WHY IS IM GONE... USERPLANE pulled their service because Markus pulled the advertizing space to give some members a "Perferred member button" (if they pay for it)
WHY DOES HE CLAIM AN INCREASE IN TRAFFIC.... Markus claims traffic increased by up to 10% since removing the IM service. He's is part right. Traffic is up but, as noted by many other members in this thread it is not due to the IM being gone. It is due to people having to log on more frequently to check emails. and such.
WHY NOT USE YOUR OWN PERSONAL MESSENGER... There are reasons people (both men and women) don't wish to do this. 1) They don't cared to disclose any personal info till they feel comfortable in doing so. 2) Can find out first if it's worth conversing longer by using the onsite IM Which is far faster than emailing. Think about it....all the comment laid out here could have been taken care of in less than one day had it been through a chat service rather than the forums. So yes IM is far faster.
SO why not set up a seperate account just for POF contacts. 1) Some cant run more than one messenger at a time . Why lose contact with your real friends you already know just to have the one running for POF. 2) Some are not able to run more than one for pc lagging reasons. 3) Some may not understand how to use something such as trillian which can enable you to do this either.
BENIFITS TO IM... 1) faster contact 2) you know right away if someone desires to talk with you rather than waiting days to seen if they deleted your emil to them or gee they are still holding it but haven't yet responded to you. 3) Yes it puts people on the spot. They are forced to either "ignore user" or respond to you and answer. So you know now not 2 weeks from now or never.
FOR THOSE THAT DIDN'T LIKE THE IM... Yes you had the choice to turn it off altogether in your mail settings or simply only allow those on your fav list to contact you through it. All of us that did allow it to be on in some way could easily BLOCK those that did IM us right from the IM window. That choice was up near the "smack" "kiss" button. We all had a choice. Now we have none.
WILL I STAY... only till i find another good yet reliable dating site that is also free. With Marku slowly destroying this one that shouldn't take long.
See Markus, many will go. Now where will your revenue (gold mine) come from. New will join yes but, once they to see they have been lied to they to will leave you. How are you lieing? Your main page alone advertizes FREE messenging service. That is no longer true. Whether or not the paid member are able to use the IM remains to be seen at this time. As one paid member (very disatisfied I might add) posted in here that she cannot use the IM. So where does this benifit her at all in sending money to you and getting no more than a "preferred member" button. She can do no more than we can.
Yes Markus you did (key word did) have the best site going. Now as one other member stated it's only a matter of time before someone else see how you messed up and pick up where you failed. Giving us all back what we want. FREEDOM OF CHOICE.
Chances of me reposting here is slim to none. Not to say I won't but, it is very doubtful. Everything has been said I see no value in rehashing it further. Nor will I entertain some of the childish comments from others such as the 2 I have mentioned plus several others I have not.
FAIR DECISION Post a link on the main page for alll members to vote (one vote only per member and per IP address) Now get your fair numbers for what your members really do or don't want. Don't assume we all know what that does don't we. If I were to go solely on the Forum members (which is not a fair count) then majority would be ruling in favor of bringing the IM in some form back.
Even i would opt out of the voice n video for a better quality of IM. If not even the old one (with its problems) was still by far better then none at all) I think I have covered just about everything.

| Instant Messenger Has Been Discontinued By 3rd party Vendor Posted: 5/10/2009 10:26:32 PM | I am very confused about this IM being discontinued. I agree with you - if it was going to be shut off people should have been made aware of it - I thought there was something wrong with my computer. The website should have removed 'free instant messanging' from the site. It is May 11th & Free Messanging still exists on the site. Very misleading. Where are all the other 'free' sites someone mentioned? | |

| POF will soon crumble with no IM Posted: 5/10/2009 10:31:29 PM | | I'm sorry we aren't permitted to name sites in here or give out links. Our post will get delete for it and we possibly banned. for it. | |

| IM Posted: 5/11/2009 8:40:15 AM | please bring back the im user the site is no good now how are u suppose to chat with ppl please help bring it back | |

| IM Posted: 5/11/2009 12:10:10 PM | Personally, I always liked the IM feature on here. It kind of completed the whole POF package. For those that don't (or didn't) care for it, there was always the option of turning it off under user options......think it was in "mail settings".
I hope they bring it back, or find and use something else to incororate on this site.
My 2 cents. | |

| IM turns me off. Posted: 5/11/2009 1:11:30 PM | | I agree about being able to keep your personal details hidden until you feel comfortable enough to see if you want to share your details. i feel uncomfortable without IM. Free or not I might as well go to yahoo or somewere else to chat. Come on POF bring it back if you can, this is a great site. | |

| IM turns me off. Posted: 5/11/2009 9:22:29 PM | With BigFish's millions he earns from this site I'm willing to bet that he can afford to bring back another FREE IM for all of us to use. I'd say by his short little replies on here that he mainly cares about making the big bucks. I mean he's giving Serious Memberships to many troublemakes on here who truly don't deserve it as I've had to deal with their BS on more than one occasion! Then to us members who have been here for years we get the shaft! Well making lots of money is nice but when you drag thousands of members through the mud just to keep all your millions it makes this site even harder than it was before! I've been here over five years and put up with so much garbage but it was nice to have the IM feature so I could at least try to conatct anyone! Even the ones I couldn't e-mail due to the stupid preferences options I could still IM them and some were glad that I did becuase we became good friends after that! There is so much butt kissing in this topic and it's usually from the more attractive people that don't have to fear not getting dates and they know it! lol. If Mar-CUSS FIEND wants to destory this site maybe it will be a blessing for me and so many others who are rarely given a chance on here... I've gotten to where I hate this site due to the many members' stubborn ways and great immaturity! But why do I stay here? Because I still have hope that maybe the BS fog might clear for a couple days and something truly great will come along!!! Please quit being selfish to thousands of people and bring back IM!!! | |

| IM turns me off. Posted: 5/11/2009 9:54:57 PM | | If your looking for a possible alternative in the future, what about incorporating google talk? | |
|
| IM Posted: 5/12/2009 4:19:12 AM | | Are you kidding me! That's just insane to discontinue your sites best feature! It was like a virtual bar to see who's crazy and who's not. I'm sure you will hear far more complaints about how inconvenienced your loyal users have now become! | |
