| Why not ajaxIM? Posted: 5/14/2009 10:11:38 PM | I've been considering attempting adding ajaxIM to some of the sites I work on myself. Its currently free and (I think) open source, so ya'll admins could adapt it to the site. I'm not sure if it has video chat, but it could be a good starting point to create a new IM client on POF.

| IM turns me off. Posted: 5/14/2009 10:36:43 PM | your claim that other sites do not have IM is way off base. Here are the following sites I have personally been on that all offer IM.
Match.com JDate Fling.com Amateur Matches

| IM turns me off. Posted: 5/15/2009 10:32:16 PM | Wow, too bad.
I personally have mine turned off because I find it annoying when I am not looking.
But If the IM feature did not exist, I would never have met my boyfriend.
I hope a new free IM feature gets reinstated.
There are many other better free chat/video cam sites if you look out there for meeting people. The video chat on other sites are a lot faster loading than the userplane that was on this site so you don't have to add people right away to your personal msn. It is just about finding the site that is suitable for your needs.

| Instant Messenger Has Been Discontinued By 3rd party Vendor Posted: 5/17/2009 8:45:36 AM | | Where this person got the idea it would increase membership is out of this world! I have noticed in my area Ireland Limerick/Kerry that people online daily has dropped by two thirds from around 30 to 10, and those 10 stay online for very brief moment. Maybe i'm wrong but for the genuine people out there who used this site for good purposes and enjoyed it i'm afraid to burst your bubble but those days are no more!! | |

| Instant Messenger Has Been Discontinued By 3rd party Vendor Posted: 5/17/2009 2:17:36 PM | | Yea the mail works so well, that I had some one return one I sent 2 weeks ago. The IM was chatting in real time. With that gone, I have tried the emails, and it simply isnt working. Too much effort and time is required now . I'm gonna give it a few more days and see if i get any more mail. If not I'm done and will delete my account. | |

| IM turns me off. Posted: 5/18/2009 3:42:24 PM | You say the site is so much more effective without an IM? According to who? I would say the exact opposite is true, the site has become lifeless and boring without the IM feature. I understand POF did not own the IM codes, or something along those lines....so why not write you own? Is it too complex? Since there doesn't seem to be a unanimous consensus about whether or not the IM feature is good or not (one could argue that it is good, seeing as every major site has them), why not have it as an option? You can choose to see/accept them and use them...or not. Just because the admin person does not seem to care for them, suddenly they are pointless and won't be offered to the many people who do? | |

| IM turns me off. Posted: 5/21/2009 5:38:02 PM | | In last week the site is showing signs of dying, its useless, but it just shows too that there were a lot of people who were on here to take the piss and stuff because they werent long leaving once IM gone, no more attention, you can see who was serious now and who weren't, but all in all the craic is gone, the Buzz, the piss-take, the jokes, I never was big in to this online thing, certainly can't take it serious! but does'nt this show that its all about instant communication, IM is the equivalent of texting on your phone and look at textings effectiveness, we live in an age of technology and its even surpassing us, so to take Instant Chat away on internet is like taking powersteering from a Car, the thing still operates but you sure would miss the easy parking! | |

| IM Posted: 5/22/2009 2:00:28 AM | Yes, I totally agree bring IM back, i really enjoy chatting with the IM and had a few good dates through it, not so with emailing, the contact just isnt the same, theres very little spontaneity with email its too flat, I thought it was just me but reading all the mails it seems everyone has been cut off, the site is not as enjoyable anymore, does anyone know of another free worldwide site that does IM? | IM Posted: 5/22/2009 2:51:48 PM | I dont agree that the site was more effective with out IM. people who didnt like it had the option of disabling it on their pages. There are some of us out there that realy liked it. Its much easier getting to know someone through instant messaging rather than emails, and I feel much more comfortable instant messaging on here than giving out my personal messangers. Every time I give out my own messanger name, it causes problems and i end up with stalkers. im curious to know how you think its more effective with out it? was there a poll or survey done? I would like to suggest a survey on what the members think. I do understand that getting a new messanger takes time and money, and with this being free, that can cause a problem. However, this is the BEST site out there, and trust me, im on almost all of them, the IM feature was one of the reasons it was the best. I certainly wont stop using this site, but I am very disapointed to lose the option. | |

| Instant Messenger Posted: 5/24/2009 4:43:50 PM | I am in total agreement with the feeling that the loss of the IM system compromizes the superiority of this site. I would definately bring the IM's back....and before someone responds to my post claiming that it is out of POF's hands, and that AOL is at fault..dont waste your time...the IM's could be brought back if administration so wanted. Also, to everyone to who has been posting comments about not complaining about something that is free...you are very naive....of course the site is free to us....but make no mistake, administration is making millions of this site...its a business....and we are the consumer's who keep it alive, whether we pay or not. Administration claims that membership is up 10 percent since IM's were taken out, but i believe this is somewhat misleading, as membership has been rising steadily since 2001 anyway. And instead of concentrating on that 10 percent....what about the 90 percent of us who have been faithfully using your site over recent years, and as a result have kept you in business. Just read the preceeding hundreds of posts.....the overwhelming majority wants the feature back. If you dont feel the need to be true to the longterm members, that is fine...but you may lose many of us..and that 10 percent may not seen so great then. greg | |

| IM turns me off. Posted: 5/26/2009 7:46:27 PM | I didn't read all 23 pages on this thread, so this may already have been suggested, but perhaps some sort of happy medium would be to provide a link to YIM or something along those lines with a standard disclaimer that it's not part of PoF ...

| IM turns me off. Posted: 5/27/2009 11:20:14 AM | Email a couple of times, then use IM to see if you chat easily and then arrange to meet if you do. The system worked well and didn't give away personal details like your MSN address for the shy or nervous.
I do like to get the measure of how easily I click with someone on an instant chat before I meet, can't do that with Email.

| IM turns me off. Posted: 5/27/2009 9:12:45 PM | Awwwww, I'm bummed about the IM feature being discontinued. For me it was a good tool to get acquainted with others to see if there was a spark. I used to get some pervs though, that wanted to cyber...lol. Actually, that was the most action I've on POF.... He he he, just kiddin', but please bring back the IM feature!!! | |
