Hmm... well let's see.. What defines an increase in active users? When users we online before IM was turned off, and only using IM, did they show up as active? Or, the fact that we now have no choice but to send out emails that 95% of the time don't get answered, is that the reason for the increase. sadly I chatted with a number of people that I have now lost contact with as they seem to not want to answer emails or to go outside of POF. As for no other major dating sites having IM - well I haven't been on a few of them in some time, but all of the ones I was on prior to making POF the only site I used had an IM facility - ALL OF THEM. I rather suspect usage will very soon decrease. Performance has been brutal in the last few days - and POF has crashed IE at least 4 times in the last few days due to some error with an Adobe Add-In. These "roll-over" ads seem to be the source of the slowness - they take forever to load and if you aren't paying attention and happen to leave you cursor over one - well give it another minute or two while they load up... I agree with many - things are getting worse rather than better. We can only hope though our pleas are heard. | |

They always charged, and it was my single largest expense more than my hosting costs.
UK traffic has risen 14% in 4 days since it was /qdisabled, and even more now that its been removed today.
I could be wrong but isnt the uk where the the ips are located where most of the nigerian scammers use? | |

First off...it was disabled because Markus said it was being "discontinued", which has been proven false if you just walk your little mouse over to www.userplane.com and check it out. A previous post said that AOL probably discontinued it's work with POF because of the Serious Member Icon, which results in less revenue, because the ads that used to be there were removed. Most likely, this is exactly the case. However, I am not going to jump to conclusions. I most definitely miss the IM feature, as it uses far less of my time to speak to the same person and see if we hit it off, etc. However, if the IM does remain off, I don't think that I will be actually leaving, just not using my profile anywhere near as much, and will be utilizing other tools.
Oh, and COWBOY, you are completely wrong. there is definitely another site I can name by name that utilizes a VERY good IM service, however there are different people on every site. the site reminds me of a my,space-esque type design, and has the same abbreviation as Oklahoma City, so just google OKC + dating if you wanna see what I am talking about. OH, and yes, it is completely free as well.
Markus, as for your 10% more activity...of course you are going to have more activity when people have to keep emailing back and forth rather than IM'ing quickly. That's just math. People are going to be online more and etc. if they can't do things quickly. By removing that key feature of IM'ing, you have doomed your site to become another fly by night dating website. You may have increased traffic now, but soon that traffic will go down because people won't want to use your services as much, because you took away one fairly UNIQUE feature to the website. I for one won't be using it as often. Hope you make the right choice, do away with the giant SERIOUS MEMBER logo, and allow AOL to have their ad-space again so that they can renew their contract with you.

IMs did not enhance conversation in anyway, so I don't care if we have them or not. | |

This is a forum to speak your mind, and this thread happens to be about the loss of the IM feature. I can't think of a better place to vent about the issue since emailing Markus will get you no where. As for the people who find an IM intrusive, really? WTF? It's no more intrusive than someone offering to buy you a drink at a bar, striking up a conversation in line at the grocery store, or receiving an email from someone on a dating site. The only difference between emails and IM's is the quicker responses from not having to wait for a reply.
That being said, I enjoyed the IM feature, and would love to see it come back. You get more of a feel of who someone is getting to have an actual conversation with someone rather reading their thought out emails. As for all the conspiracy theories about bringing it back but only for paid members, once Markus asked for money from P.O.F. users he should no longer refer to this site as 100% free. Now it's basically free. I'm really disappointed in the direction of this site lately and will probably be using my account less because of it. | |

I also HAVE a userplane account for a website I help run. I e-mailed the customer service after reading what Markus said because I was concerned for my own site. I recieved an email back stating that they were not closing down, and not canceling any of their services. Again Markus is become a greedy ass lying prick. | |
