And you are always going to have idiots no matter what. Please enable it again.

And you are always going to have idiots no matter what. I see the removal of the 'im as a fabulous opportunity for people to become more discerning as to with whom they correspond. My optimistic side feels that some may even learn how to compose a literate email. On the downside...we may see more whining threads.

Corporations dont pay for adds on sites that people do not frequent. Getting a msn or yahoo id and messenger is not the same as being able to chat on here, the same site that holds a persons profile and notes to each other. When everyone leaves for lack of being able to communicate this site will be history.
|
| IM works Posted: 4/17/2009 1:15:13 PM | Five years from now, some of us (hopefully, not all), and many new people will be finding something else to gripe about, but POF will still be here. It may be owned by a corporation, maybe with different services, but it'll outlast this. So, if you can all get what you want by leaving the site, good bye and good luck. I'm not willing to put money down that this will be history. And frankly, I'm having too much fun to leave the party quite yet.
And as for my comment about IMs? I don't care for the intrusiveness of unsolicited windows opening up (and that annoying accordian noise). That's my thing. I'm sure other people feel differently. But in my experience, men who write me take time in an email to introduce themselves articulately and respectfully. My experience in IM hasn't been quite the same. Perhaps if it had been, I might care. But I'll take an old fashioned charming email any day over a brash, rude opening IM line.

| IM works Posted: 4/17/2009 1:29:52 PM | Sig: quote] The users make the site, not the administrator. Corporations dont pay for adds on sites that people do not frequent.
Based on the numbers a poster quoted in this thread from userplane on the daily usage here of that IM feature and also assuming that number was all from separate users (which I doubt) of 80,000 and the fact this site claims just under a million active users here a day that would mean 90+ percent of the people on this site are not using the feature even once. And if that 80,000 number is for total IM sessions and not users then that percentage is much higher because many here IM or "try to" numerous times a day.
I hardly think "everyone" is going to leave. When most dont even use it.
But rest assured that Markus is no fool. And he will be watching his site traffic statistics in the next 30 to 60 days I would wager closely.
So if everyone really did quit visiting this site he will notice and I bet he takes action. If your P.O. but keep visiting the statistics wont even show a drop.
Now its merely a GUESS on my part but I think if his site traffic seriously drops he will indeed offer userplane again but my guess is it will only be an option for the paid members. Which would be the first step in creating a tiered system really for the members here. Which I don't want at all. I would rather lose userplane then have it come back for paid members only which I'm afraid is the goal.
Despite claims in this thread by others saying Markus is stupid etc.. You could not be more wrong. He is very very bright. Thats why I think there is a plan in place, and a reason it was discontinued. I think he is very smart and discontinuing the current IM software right now is just part of a longer range goal. And I am betting that includes the IM in the future being part of a package offered only to paid members.
This all speculation on my part and nothing more! But it scares me. When you demand the IM back... I say be very careful what you ask for as you may just get it.

| Hey Jerk Posted: 4/17/2009 1:48:53 PM | While I appreciate that IM was a cost to you and you decided to shut it down, it would have really been nice if you could have announced it in advance so that some of the new online relationships that were developed by it's use didn't have to end when you cut us off!!
Exactly what would it have cost you so send a mass email in regard to this change ***hole?

| Why does everyone have their IM turned off? Posted: 4/17/2009 2:02:44 PM | I always thought that the POF IM program was one of the worst chatting programs.
There were bugs, like it was easy to open 10 windows on somebody's computer (don't know if that ever got fixed). Couldn't toggle between tasks and use it (alt-tab). Extraordinarily slow... on a bad internet connection, could take 5-10 minutes to open. One could never tell why it did not open on the other person's screen. I believe it was susceptible to popup blockers. Well, the list could go on.
However, I also thought it was a good part of the site. It is easier to chat with someone than to send e-mails back and forth... and I think people get to know each other better using a chat program than sending e-mails back and forth. Or, if one wants, it is easy to just close the window.
I would think it would be beneficial if Marcus (the admin) would just send out a mass e-mail (or one of those funky polls) with his plans with respect to chatting.
I have seen a website where one could post links to Yahoo/ICQ/AIM/MSN/etc.
I wonder if there would be a way to make some kind of a MS Communicator - Like link to instant messaging where the actual names would be kept anonymous, and it would support multiple clients. Personally, I use the Pidgin IM client which will talk to any other major IM client with no ads, spyware, and etc.

MARKUS - TELL US WHATS GOING ON FORMALLY SO WE CAN STOP GUESSING HE DID !!
Markus posted multiple times in this thread. He posts as "Admin". Not sure what he left you to guess about. He said that he was discontinuing the IM feature and he would not be bringing it back.
How can you possibly not understand what he has told you, and believe you need to "guess" about anything. What exactly do you want Markus to do here? Swear on the bible he is not kidding and IM is REALLY REALLY gone? He told you in this thread its gone and he is NOT bringing it back.
Your in denial. I am sorry your P.O. but that doesn't mean whining in this thread will accomplish anything at all. Your ONLY hope is the site traffic drops severely. And not a few pct points. It will have to be huge. If you keep stopping in here to check mail etc.. it wont drop either just because you dont have IM.
I agree 100 percent he should of maybe posted something on the login page before this happened. He didnt.
So what? Kinda late now dont you think?
Best of Luck

| Why does everyone have their IM turned off? Posted: 4/17/2009 2:19:13 PM | i guess i want to address a few previous points.........
i think we all understand that the owner can do as he wishes, i really don't think anyone questions that......i do think, however, people are upset not just at the demise of im here, but the way it was handled, or more accurately, NOT handled
i also think that at least SOME of the "increased traffic" that admin referred to seeing when the im "died" is likely attributable to people logging off and on checking to see if im was up and running, as i did, since there was no notice, no information, and i think there was a considerable period of time that people though it was a temporary problem and checked back frequently to check on its status..........i can't help but think that contributed to the "increased traffic," and i hope now or soon they will see "decreased traffic" instead
i think we 18 million users that markus boasts of deserved some notice and explanation. period. and we may not provide his income DIRECTLY, but we certainly, as the users, are responsible for his riches.........
i think we have as much right to voice our opinions as he does to do what he wishes with this site
i have used pof for over two years, it served its purpose for me until now: i had been considering closing my account for awhile for personal reasons; this has made the decision for me

| Why does everyone have their IM turned off? Posted: 4/17/2009 2:58:10 PM | Well this is just one fish speaking. If I'm going to pay for a dating site...I'll go pay on one that has been up front about charging from the start. One that hasnt boasted about being free and then like a drug dealer that thinks they have you hooked...begin to charge you...just because they can. Oh well...its nice to have options.

Hoestly cowboy, I don't know if your trying to be noticed, Or looking for a mod position.. What ever it is it doesn't seem to be working for you !
Basically what I get from everything you have said is that Marcus being the owner can do what he wants to do when he wants to do it ?!?!
So if I owned a taxi cab and decided to remove the seats my customers would have to live with it ? Your logic makes no sence
People have every right to be upset I firmly believe that the IM feature of POF was a staple and belongs here, Like I have said before this is the beginning of the end for POF as a "Free" site
Had Marcus of been upfront and honest from the start of all this people might not be so upset
|
| IM works Posted: 4/17/2009 3:21:56 PM | lol <div class='quote'> So if I owned a taxi cab and decided to remove the seats my customers would have to live with it ? <div class='quote'>
They would if they want to ride for free.
I firmly believe that the IM feature of POF was a staple and belongs here
And its to bad you dont own and control this site too. But you don't. Markus does. And the bottom line is he doesnt care what you think or how many post here whining. You have not figured that out yet? Hey I think IM will come back. AND YOU WILL PAY FOR IT
He is quoted in articles published on the web saying that he knows better then his customers what is good for this site. That his "vision" for this sites success is better then listening to his customers. ARE YA LISTENING TO WHAT I JUST SAID??
What I am telling is that he has told you IM is gone and that he is not giving it back right now anyway. Thats in this thread. I didnt make it up Markus told you that himself.
The comment I made above came from the long thread about paid memberships here before. He was quoted in a published article saying he knows better then you whats best for this site OK?
And based on those two facts you can whine and rant here all you want and your not getting the IM back. So what else are you wanting? I agree he should of announced it first. I am on your side here. But your not getting the IM back so what else do you want? An apology for not treating you better?
Dont hold your breath is my advice on that one.

| IM works Posted: 4/17/2009 3:25:42 PM | | I would greatly like to see some sort of im feature brought back otherwise I'm considering deleting the account as there is no point to use it any longer. | |
|
| IM works Posted: 4/17/2009 3:59:25 PM | | Markus whoever you are, I will do you if you bring it back Ok? | |
|
| IM Posted: 4/17/2009 4:06:22 PM | | I thought this site was FREE. Why should they make you PAY for something that's FREE???? | |
|
| Bring Back IM Posted: 4/17/2009 4:11:52 PM | | Without the IM feature POF will be just like all the other run of the mill free dating sites. They really had a good thing going that set them apart. | |
|
| Bring Back IM Posted: 4/17/2009 4:21:47 PM | Can I suggest that the thing that is getting people upset is not that IM has gone but the way it has been done, even with 10 pages of discussion Admin hasnt had the Ba**s to respect his customers (yes we are customers) and explain formally,in a way visible to everyone the Why and How this has happened.
Even Gordon Brown had the Ba**s to apologise this week !!!
I have read most of the posts on here ref IM i do not know what is happening, it is not clear FACT. Can we have the answers to the following.
1. When and why IM has dissappeared ? 2. Will it be availiable to paying members ? 3. IM, you either love it or hate it, canwe have a poll to clarify which is majority (we should respect the majority) 4. If there is a majority that want it back is this a possibility or is it dead and buried ? 5. Can i suggest a message to ALL users answering the above, put the end to all the rumours
I am trying to use POF without the IM service, I personally think it is worse without it, but all i want to knowis the facts so I can decide what to do.
Thanks | |

I've been reading the dang instructions to IM and going crazy trying to figure out why I can't get it...Doh!

| IM turns me off. Posted: 4/17/2009 4:58:59 PM | My suggestion re: making a statement on the IM discontinuation is avoiding the site altogether for awhile. If everyone does this, then perhaps the decision will be reconsidered.
As many others have stated, I really have no use for this site w/out the IM function.
