Well iv never heard of them before, why call them dental dams though if they are purely for oral sex? why not call them something more fitting for protection against oral sex than something i would ask my dentist for. Maybe there called something else here in the UK. Called that because that is where they came from. Dentists use a small piece of latex when working on some teeth for some proceedures.. normally those that produce a lot of excess waste or are *messy*. The original form has a small hole in it that is fitted around a tooth, the excess material forms a barrier inside the mouth containing the waste from the dental proceedure. Some smart person decided that it would make an excellent barrier for oral sex. Only it's larger and no hole. *big grin* I've seen them in the pharmacy right beside the condoms.
You can use a condom in a pinch, or as some others have noted plastic wrap. It's suggested to mark in some fashion the *up* and the *down* side and always have the *up* facing upwards... further increasing the prevention factor. Presumably if you keep your partners side to your partner, then you can't catch whatever might be lingering on their side of the dam. I've also heard the suggestion to use lube on the underside to increase sensation.
I've never used them...

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 7/22/2009 10:06:44 PM | People never seen a dental l dam or they think it is made up. I volunteer for planned parent hood at events and hand out dental dams out... guess what people do not have a clue what they are or how to use them. I give them the lubricant sample and tell them place the lube on the skin and then place the denatl dam on it. People are shocked. | |

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 7/23/2009 7:57:08 AM | | I'm glad that it was clarified that these are made of latex, not plastic. I rarely have people ask for them at clinic, although I have been asked to provide them during workshops. They can also be used for rimming. | |

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 7/23/2009 8:46:06 AM | 7Rainbows They are called dental dams as dentists use then to catch the stuff they grind out of teeth. Swallowing the old mercury laden filling materials is supposed to be bad.
A wide open mouth had a lot in common with a, well you know, and so they became a preferred item during the early AIDS/HIV hysteria.
marissais5 That certificate is only as good as the day it is printed. With a 3 month incubation period whipping out the paperwork does not count for much. I will be happy to be corrected on those figures though.
I feel there is enough research to prove that the risk is negligible, not zero, but low enough for bare-back with either sex.

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 7/23/2009 12:04:30 PM | | StraightTalker2 uses the term "bareback". This misnomer may lead people to think that he is talking about vaginal or anal intercourse without protection. Let's be clear about risks with unprotected oral sex on the vulva. Yes, it is low-risk for HIV (although, for men having multiple unprotected oral sex partners, their risk for contracting HIV is much higher, because many have already gotten syphilis this way). The most common STI contracted with unprotected oral sex on a woman is herpes (with a "giver's" history of cold sores leading to HSV-1 on the genitals). Not the end of the world because it is generally less frequently recurrent than HSV-2 and often not as painful. No amount of paperwork is going to help you out here. | |

I get tested and I am more then welcome to whip out my no std report to anyone who I am with in a monogamous relationship. Sorry that report was only good for the day it represents... as of that moment in time, you had no detectable STDS... However, that does not mean you don't have any that were not tested for... (Always make sure your doctor tests for what you want and not ONLY what he/she thinks you need...) If the test was done within 3-6 months after your last sexual encounter, you may still have an STD, but have not yet produced sufficent anti-bodies to be detectable... but you still can be infectious / infected... I get tested every 3 months. My doctor knows my particular situation and gives me a comprehensive set of tests accordingly.... I was in the habit of getting tested before and after each partner... and making sure my partner got tested before we did anything together.
And finally, a report of being free of STD's could be whipped up by anyone with a scanner/printer and a few basic computer skills faster than booking an appointment... so go with your partner to get the results....

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 7/23/2009 12:38:24 PM | | Never used them, and never will. I don't believe in using condoms for oral sex either. I believe, if you have doubts about a partner's sexual history, then either get tested or refrain from sex. | |

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 7/23/2009 3:12:36 PM | | While were at it lets put condoms over our tounges when we kiss too. General rule going down on someone is not a hand shake, you dont do that to every partner. Just the ones your seriouse with. | |

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 7/23/2009 3:59:09 PM | Hey there are some tasty condoms out there! Don't knock it until you try it! People, make a habit of checking in from time to time at adult stores like The Secret and Good Vibrations (aimed at women) or Spencer's (aimed at everyone). There are some things there for every taste. | |

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 7/24/2009 4:58:33 AM | From what I remember, microwavable plastic wrap (do they still make that?) WAS NOT a good substitute for a dental dam, due to its increased porasity in order to be microwavable.
Betcha they don't put THAT on the box....
as for using one, well....yeah....I'd rather just use a finger w/ no cuts on it, than tasting plastic all night long. Crunch crunch crunch. Somehow just the sound seems less romantic.
risky, I know....but driving w/out ABS in my old car is also risky, so....we plan ahead, and take our calculated risks, right?

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 10/30/2009 12:00:20 AM | Never tried it yet. I haven't found anyone willing to try. Not to get too off-topic, but I've been curious about trying them as a barrier in a lesbian scissoring act one of these days. Not sure how to keep them in place, and I suppose I'd use 1 for myself and 1 for the female partner. | |

In practice, it's a piece of plasic wrap that a person performing oral sex on a woman uses to create a barrier against mouth/tongue-to-genital contact.
Hmm very bizarre I always thought the whole point of going down on a girl was the tongue to genital contact.
This is news to me | |

Having a slight latex fetish, I thought it was kind of fun. One idea is to conform the plastic a little so you aren't just licking plastic, you're moving the plastic along with all those awesome oral tricks you've perfected.
Hey, thanks for the lesson. That was helpful. Ya learn something new every day.

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 10/30/2009 12:36:26 PM | A friend of mine wrote a letter to the manufacturer of Saran Wrap and asked if it could be used in place of a Dental Dam for oral sex. He received a prompt response saying "Absolutely NOT!". And they explained that "Saran Wrap is quite porous with microscopic worm holes large enough for a virus to easily pass." Just thought I'd pass that along..... | |
|
| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 10/31/2009 3:31:28 AM | | A lady on page one mentioned saran wrap then someone lauphed at her but that is exactly what I use. Dental dams are too thick and kind of defeat the purpose. Saran wrap is thin therefor you have to be careful not to rip it but it works pretty dam good.. | |

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 10/31/2009 7:38:58 AM | | I am in a serious relationship with my boyfriend. We've been together for over a year and a half. We waited 7 months to have sex. I was a virgin and his second sexual partner. We have never used anything for oral, but we do use condoms for intercourse (I'm also on the pill). The only reason we use condoms for sex is because we both feel that we have so many plans ahead of us and we don't want to have children before we are ready, so why not use two methods of protection? Everyone in his family has had an unplanned pregnancy and he will be the first and only to have a planned pregnancy, planned marriage ect. | |

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 10/31/2009 8:28:53 AM | This is one of the reasons I go for testing as opposed to condoms... Oral Sex without a condom, followed by intercourse with a condom seems like such a stupid concept... Apart from the fact that some viruses like Herpes can be passed by skin contact below the belt making condoms less than 100%.... By the time you've had your fingers tongue or mouth all over the other person's genitalia... then you use those same fingers to put a condom on... then those wet testicles are slapping away at her damp bits... It's surprising a condom offers any protection at all....

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 11/1/2009 8:12:25 AM | why call them dental dams though if they are purely for oral sex? My guess is because they're designed after the dental dams the dentist uses in your mouth during various dental procedures. Aside from thickness, they're the same.
Man, this post reminds me of my first week of university the first year. They were promoting the use of dental dams hardcore. It was like "if you're going to participate in oral sex, you MUST use a dental dam. If you don't, you will get sick!" and they'd be handing them out to everyone in the halls. They'd practically force you to take one. I'm was, and am still, a conservative virgin. I was in such shock, and so annoyed by their forcefulness because I "might never know when I'll need one." "Yeah, I'm not the sleep-around one night stand type, so I'm sure I'll know. Now please kindly F off."

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 11/1/2009 8:40:39 PM | | Why the problem witj dental dams... they are only out there as an option for people to use for safer sex... just like condoms... spermicides... finger cots... not for everyone... | |

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 11/1/2009 9:34:55 PM | So for the people who have used dental dams, do they protect against odors as well? I can be sure they protect against taste, but how about odors? After some negative experiences, this is why I would be interested in using a DD.
Someone please step up and answer. Don't make me create a whole new thread to ask this question. I don't want to have to do that.

| Who has used dental dams for oral sex? Posted: 11/2/2009 8:50:38 PM | | It is the same when a woman ask you to use a condom to perform oral sex on you,,,, it depends on the person and the situation... I have used them and would do it again if need to be.... | |
