From age 17 to 21 it was my ONLY transportation. Where I grew up, you couldn't get a drivers licence for a car until age 21.
I always had one since.

Posted: 10/11/2009 7:51:51 PM | old man down the road- I agree we are the only breed that does that and i also fork out my precious dollars for the same charties womens cancer etc. I stand proud when they bring our KIA's home my friends that died in DA Nam didnt have that and women were second grade citizens a few years ago and didnt have the support that they do now.I ride a trike and the only thing that i might worry about now is texting,cellphone talking and drunks and my bike ways a lot so i will walk away and have a M-60 mounted on the front fender and always carry a RPG on the back one for the idiots that try to kill bikers | |

I think it might be the freedom of moving against the wind and hopefully not the posing. My very good friend hit the road on the back of her husband's motorcycle and that confirmed to me, with I held on for dear life to the back of my BF's bike, that the fear I experience is for a very good reason. The stories of the crashes and the serious injuries, broken bones, yeah, it is like deep sea diving off the reef in N. Australia and then wondering what the hell that shark is doing in the water. But I see the comraderie and think it is great you have found something you enjoy so very much. My good friend is a biker groupie and there are plenty of those for sure. So, have fun boys. | |

I kind of like my brains inside my skull and not smeared across four lands of highway. But that's just me.

Not sure why you would believe that. In 2006 4,935 people died in motorcycle accidents. That's all types of motorcycles including 3-wheelers and off road. A little more than 40% f those were between the ages of 18 and 26.
Also in 2006 a total of 42,642 died in motor vehicle accidents. So for every one motorcycle "organ donor," there were 11 motor vehicle "organ donors."

Posted: 10/21/2009 6:01:38 AM | | I belong to the American Legion Riders.We have alot of younger than 45 members nation wide and many women of the Auxillary who enjoy riding Motorcycles.Why cant people of our era get over the "Biker" stigma from the 60's.Motorcycles are an enjoyable "Family" pastime.I have owned bikes since my teens and never needed permission from a wife to own or ride one.Some of the post's in the forums absolutely amaze me at their idiotic content!Motorcycles are fun fuel efficent and if your educated in safety can be very enjoyable.As a paramedic with Seattle Fire Dept,after a long shift riding my bike helped me to unwind and relax.My thoughts to the OP are try it ya might like it! | |

Here are some figures from the NHTSA. These are from 2001.
"The fatality rate per 100,000 registered motorcycle was 64.88 while the number of fatalities per 100,000 registered passenger cars was only 15.72. In other words, motorcycle accidents are four times more likely to be deadly than are passenger car accidents."
I believe this is the rate of fatalities that my ER friend was talking about. It also just occurred to me that when she told me about the saying, it was in a place and time where wearing a helmet was not compulsory. | |
