Why Are Over 45 Men In Love With Motorcycles?
Posted: 4/20/2009 1:41:43 AM

I'm not judging - really I'm not. But it seems like riding a motorcycle is WAY overrepresented statistically among the men on this forum and POF. I am amazed how many guys put pictures of their bikes - with or without them in the shot - on their profiles. Is there some female equivalent of this? Guys, is there some constant you see in us ladies over 45? Inquiring minds want to know!

I don't own one, but I borrowed a friend's motorcycle one time many years ago to get to work because my car broke down, and I caught "bike fever". I didn't bother getting my car fixed until he started complaining. Didn't have the money to buy a bike, but probably would have. I have the funds now, but have long been cured of my short bought with "bike fever".

So - I don't own nor want a bike. Want to see my antique collection instead? I do have a picture with one in it.

Answer to Q #1 - From the context of the post, I take it you're referring to pictures the ladies include with their ads here on POF. I would have to agree with the pets remark.

Answer to Q #2 - This sounds like a continuation of the first question.

Not all men over (or under) 45 are in love with motorcycles, but those that have them are damn proud of them. Motorcycles signify freedom, independence and a little non-conformism. Are you, as a potential partner, welcome to participate? Maybe, maybe not. But that's not necessarily bad; just different interests.

Is there a female equivalent? Yep, I'm one and have been riding for over 30 years. But I don't have a picture of my bike in my profile. Seems there's still a double standard.

If the most common trait in ladies over 45 is pets, I fit that norm to excess maybe. I have 7 dogs...but that detail is not in my profile either.

Hey, I am 72 and on my third bike! To avoid the fall overs, I had mine triked out. I have a Honda Goldwing trike and love it. With trade ins and cash I probably have around $34,000 in it. A new one after taxes will cost over $40,000. I couldn't afford one as a young man but as a widower I can. For you ladies who are not familiar with the different brands, a Goldwing is considered the Cadillac of motorcycles because it runs quite like a whisper whereas a Harley is a loud bike. Why do I like to ride? In the right season there is nothing like the breeze blowing in your face with the smell of blooming honeysuckle in the air. I feel as if I am exploring the countryside and I know there is a camadrie amongst riders, that is why you see motorcyclists pass each other with their left hand stretched out. Simply means 'keep it between the lines and have a good ride." A friend broke down once and other bikers stopped to help. I don't see a lot of that with "cages" (cars). Every biker sums it up with the word FREEDOM!

Freedom is the most common answer to "why do you love to ride a motorcycle?"

it sounds like a deeply felt answer, but it actually only hits the surface of "why?"

Freedom...freedom from what?
and there lies the line in the sand for me...

I ride a quad, I totally get the interesting feeling of breaking through the wind...it has some kind of cleansing effect ...

and to ride safely, you must focus on the ride and only the ride....no dwelling on emotional issues or problems, work or family, ect...
so it is an escape from one paradigm into a different one ... but for some, one with a bit too much fantasy included for my taste

so, for me ... I need to see some serious balance to the way a person handles their motorsports hobby...
- How much time they spend just riding the bike...
- Are they avoiding other responsibilities ?
- Is their bike cleaner than their home ?
- Are they stretching their budget to have this hobby?
- Does it kinda seem like they are "looking for something" too hard?
- Does it seem like they seek too much recognition for being a "badass biker" or "weekend warrior" ?
- Can you almost see their mood shift into a "I'm sooo F'n cool mode" as they gear up ?

if it seems like most of their spare time is spent just riding to some town, waving at the other cool kids, eat at some diner and head back .....
and then trying to act like they are so "adventurous" ....well ... please

Given the odds ( I do not know the stats) of men finding a long term relationship nowadays
after 45 , really it is not surprising more have bikes. Separation and divorce not only breaks up a couple and their family but also changes the structure of friendships that are couple orientated . So If you are alone and getting older the quickest way of renewing a bit
of youth and just to get away from it all is a bike. The wind is nice, the smells are ok unless
you pass a freshly fertilized farm , no radio , no phone calls, just peace for a short
time till its back to reality of work and life in general. Men are solitary creatures and except for the need to procreate mostly at a younger age the bike fills a void .Plus they are fun . This is just an opinion and not necessarily endorsed or concurred by the rest of the species.

Hi new here...

"I took the back seat of of mine, just to keep the women from asking me for a ride"

I have my own bike, no need to ask for a ride.... :-)
However I have been told that a lot of women are looking for the biker guy image.

I've had my own bike...I might have one again someday.
I just assume from my years and years at pof that everyone here
is either a poet, writer or muse and owns their own harley.
I've never been a fan of harleys myself (my bad) although I hear
they are better now than they used to be...although still over priced.
Too each their own I guess...I wouldn't mind a bike ride...its that time of year.

Oh, my....I agree with RanRan....

Too many drivers do hate motorcyclists, and "pretend" not to see them....and when the competition is between a motorcycle and a car, the motorcyclist tends to lose, 99% of the time....

Old bones heal slowly, if at all, so no thanks, I'll stay off the cycles......

I was just wondering the same thing! I have no desire to ride on the back of some guy's motorcycle. I did that when I was in my early twenties and had a friend become a paraplegic from an accident on one. What is with these guys and motorcycles?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^..........................................................

You would think it would be a matter of region.. or area.. that men LOVE motorcycles.. but.. it doesn't appear to be the case.

I'm not into morotcycles in any way.. shape.. or form. That bad guy image of "the biker" doesn't appeal to me. Been there.. done that.. shoulda just bought the d*mn T-shirt instead.

I'm looking for sweet and considerate man this time round.. and four wheels with some real thickness to the sides of it. Hard-top.. or convertible.. is so much more inviting to me.. then.. open air all around.

As far as the ladies equivilant thingy.. it seems to be pets. I don't own one.. and don't plan to.. so.. I don't know what the "excuse" is then.......... hmmmmm.......... ?JMO

dustin my man you are spot on.A bike ride is the best to clear the head cleanse the soul and put your life in order.I agree with the smell thing poo aint good but the fresh smell of the bush/forrest for you yanks as you crank the power on a familiar set of twisties is magic.Sure bikes can be dangerous have lost a few friends over the years but if you ride aware and dont get your ambitions mixed up with your abilities.Just one more for the re-entering over 45ers take it slow dont buy the meanset fastest thing out there bikes nowadays are heaps faster than the stuff your used to if you rode the Zeds and Honda 4's of the 70's take care.

Men are still boys all their lives. The latest craze was fueled by the excuse of high gas prices. Plus they like the bad boy image, then go back to their day jobs... Many of these newer bikers will get bored with it, or decide it's too expensive, or have a close scare (or wreck), and stop riding in a few years.

I am a different type of biker. I have been riding for 40 years, and hope to ride many more. All my bikes are quiet with NO HD's. I would rather ride than wrench or shine... I'm a rider not a poser.

And I was riding as a teen as well, and I am no poser my dear sir.........

I have ridden bikes that were quiet, loud, small and large, and I still prefer a Harley for my ride, and my adventures.

Just because you are still a boy living your life, does not mean that all of us are boys all of our lives. I have grown up, raised a family, worked hard, and still enjoy the freedom of riding, and the joy of a motorcycle, and my preference has been and will continue to be a Harley.

If your preferences are different than mine, so be it, but do not try to judge me for who I am, or what I ride, just because it differs from you and your beliefs. Your wrench, and your shine, may be nothing more than a flash in the pan compared to mine, and I will not comment on you and yours, if you do not me and mine.

Just my opinion.......

"Only a biker truly understands why a dog likes to stick their head out the window"
" Chicks love bikers - Bikers love titties...the two just kinda go hand in hand"
"You ain't been did - Until you've been done on a Harley"
"Harley, the quicker (koochie) picker upper"

I know a lot of women riders, many in their own clubs: WOW (Women On Wheels), Harleys Angels, etc. Bought last 2 ex's their own bikes, partially to get their fat a$$ off the back of mine...lol.
I started ridin' at 15, because you could get m/c license then & had to be 16 to get a car license...I was ready to cruise...been ridin' ever since. Only 1 wreck in 38 yrs. (age 19), if you've ever been in a bike wreck...guaranteed you've been in at least a couple car wrecks. When you hop on a bike, you become a very good defensive driver...really fast!
A couple other reasons I ride:
Bikers all wave at each other as we ride by, there is just that bond - nobody ever waves at me in my truck, at least not w/more than 1 finger!
I ride on Toy Runs every year to orphanages, etc - I'm surrounded by about 500 other bikes, the Police escorts shut down the frwy. for us, & as we pull up the fence is lined w/kids dancing & waving to us...highlight of their year (and mine).
I was out doing a scenic ride one day & came across a big pasture full of horses, then saw one small section blocked off - in there was the mommy, the daddy, & the baby horse just hanging out doing the family thing...it was beautiful!
You can spend hundreds of dollars a year doing various activities to get you out of the house...or you can throw $5 in the tank and spend all day seeing & smelling some of the most gorgeous scenery that your state has to offer!

The only way to fully understand the lure of riding a motorcycle is to have ridden one. There is this incredible feeling of ‘freedom’. Yes, it reeks of the ‘Easy Rider’ stereotype, but it is there just the same. An open road, hands up on the bars, wind blowing in the face is intoxicating and very other-worldly. And as men pass the age of 45, even the most conservative of men are lured to a motorcycle. And once they’ve ridden, they’re hooked.

I write this post about men because the topic is about men, but it can be applied equally to either sex. By the age of 45, men have usually spent decades doing what the ‘boss’ has told them and spent years and years taking care of family and relationship responsibilities. They’ve fought with financial needs, taken care of personal responsibilities, and in many respects, have had their lives given to them. And on a sunny weekend afternoon, they hop on their bike and go for a ride, and for that afternoon, all responsibility and pressure is gone. For a few pleasant hours, life is only about the road, the wind, the smell of the surrounding fields, the trees and which direction to go at each intersection.

I haven’t ridden in almost 20 years, but I have a deceased friend’s bike waiting for me in the garage. And when that first pleasant day comes that I take her bike for a ride, it will all come back to me. And it’s just possible that I’ll put a pic of me riding her bike on my PoF profile, too. Because, for a few hours, life will become simple, unencumbered. And I’ll want to remember that.

I'd have to agree that it's the freedom thing. Often, married guys would love to have one but their partner is dead set against it because of their fear of the dangers of riding one. They wouldn't ride with them and wouldn't like the time they may spend away from them as they enjoy the pursuit. On top of that is the expense of buying a Harley, for instance. A lot of people couldn't justify the expense of a vehicle which is basically a part time recreational ride. So, when a guy has the freedom at 45 and over to do as he pleases, why shouldn't he take the opportunity to enjoy something he has always longed to do. I was part owner of a Harley when I was 35...what a rush...even the bug splatters!

Lately I've been jonesin' for a bike really bad... ahhhh it looks like great fun. And I've already owned all the other vehicles one ever needed... a mini van, station wagon, a pickup truck... your run of the mill family sedan... ok enough, that settles it. Within in the month I'll be riding ....
