I've noticed that blowing softer on the low D and E (tin whistle) and even mouth position sometimes can make a difference. Last night I went on YouTube and watched some amazing tin whistle players. I'm glad it's a solo instrument because I've always liked playing solos on the electric guitar.

However I try to play my banjo more like a guitar, and it's a fact that I actually invented "heavy metal banjo" back in the 90s. I installed humbucker pickups and used guitar electronics such as tube amps, wah pedal etc... Also I had to invent a special mute to make it possible to over-drive the distortion. I still have a few mp3s of the tone, which were converted from tapes made on a cassette deck in the 90's. There were a few more tricks involved, and it took me about 5 years to perfect the hard rock guitar distortion I was seeking out of my Gibson RB250 banjo. But I finally proved my point, that a banjo can indeed be modified to sound very much like a heavy metal guitar. Used to one could google "heavy metal banjo" and find my full story, but I'm not sure it still gets hits or not.
Now I play a slower acoustic style on banjo that is my own sound. It's an old hobby of mine and when I was younger I truly thought I would make it big with my banjo. As far as I got was some air play for my solo instrumentals on an internet radio station and plenty of mp3s for download.

| Do you play any unusual musical instruments? Posted: 9/29/2009 5:32:14 PM | | I have played several different instruments in my life, some of them unusual. Probably the most unusual would be the krummhorn when I was in a collegium musicum. The fingerings are similar to a recorder. | |

I play some congas, bongos, Djembe, jaws harp (monk harp in VN) shekere, rain sticks, tuned blocks and bells and a mean dashboard:) You find most of these at Drum Circles or an impromptu street jam. Fun Stuff, thanks for sharing.

I made my living as a guitarist for years - I'm cutting a classical guitar album now - and took up steel for relaxation. It's more fun than I thought it would be. I currently tune neck one to C6, and neck 2 to E13, although I want to experiment with Emin7 tuning also. I love playing western swing on it - it's a Georgeboards Custom.

| Do you play any unusual musical instruments? Posted: 10/10/2009 2:04:23 PM | I bought a Kalimba (thumb piano) off of Ebay for really cheap, and play that. I was listening to the song Robot Ponies by Laura Barrett, who primarily plays the Kalimba in her songs, and it inspired me to try it for myself.
I'm in a band with a friend of mine and I've tried implementing it on a few of our songs.

| Do you play any unusual musical instruments? Posted: 10/27/2009 7:03:28 PM | I visited a ren faire about 4 or 5 years ago and there was a harp maker there. After discovering that as a pianist I could easily pick it up I bought a cheaper one off Ebay and took some lessons from a nun that lives about a mile away, then got together $3000 to buy the harp of my dreams - a Lyon and Healy Celtic floor/lever harp called The Shamrock. I like to play anything from "Whiter Shade of Pale" to Don Mclean's "Starry Starry Night", to a little bit of "Stairway to Heaven". I attached some pick ups inside so I can use an amp if needed. The instrument looks just as beautiful as it sounds, and unlike the piano, it's an instrument that I can literally embrace and hold close to my heart while I'm playing. One poor soul who heard me playing last year at an arts show took a business card and said he would like me to play for his funeral - I didn't have the heart to ask him when that would be. | |
