| trying to lose weight, any help appreciated :D Posted: 6/17/2009 8:52:50 AM | Hey, knock it if you want. It will work.
Must be careful to avoid injury, so build it up slow. But dieting to lose weight means 24 hours a day of discipline. And if you screw up, you can suck down 5 days worth of damage in just an hour at Country Buffet.
Running requires 30 minutes a day of discipline. Run 30 minutes away from your house. Now you have to get back. Another 30 minutes.
Restrict your diet will definitely help you make your goal faster. I suggest a very low carb approach. No potatoes, rice, bread, pasta. Obviously limit your sugars.
Run or walk at least 18 miles a week. Period.
Sorry, mock it if you want. Results will come. I lost 60 lbs in 4 months. And I am a health professional.
Just do it. | |

| trying to lose weight, any help appreciated :D Posted: 6/22/2009 7:52:36 PM | 85 pounds is perfectly realistic in 8 months.. a fair bit more than you can manage without losing muscle mass, but its possible to do.. at least its not like 20 pounds in 10 days.. thats just STUPID.
Anyways, to OP.. use a BMR calculator, subtract 500 calories from the number you get and you have a diet.. Make your diet with clean foods only, allowing about 200 calories at the most for a dessert, if you must.. ONLY IF YOU MUST.
If you cannot join a gym for financial reasons then I understand completely, but if it is just because you fail to manage your time wisely.. then you'd better start. I dont really think the P90X workout is that great, however, many people have used it for weight loss with great success. See if you can get a hold of that through a download torrent if possible.. You can also engage in activities such as swimming, biking, hiking.. all that stuff.. martial arts has gotta be my favourite type of cardio workout.
Best option if available.. Diet Weights Cardio

I am curious because that is one of the berries I grow and it looks like I will have a nice bunch of red ones this year. Of course I love berries fresh off the vine. Pretty much grow fruits organically, no pesticides, so I can pluck them warm in the sun, nice high sugar content! Natural sugar of course, love berries!

NOTHING raises my heart rate like hitting the treadmill - not the bikes, not the elyptical - NOTHING! Just make sure you invest in good running shoes!!! I also had to buy ankle braces because of an old break that has never healed right.

| trying to lose weight, any help appreciated :D Posted: 6/23/2009 8:38:55 AM | Just running certainly isnt the key to a long-term weight loss project...I have ran a grand total of 0 times over the last year and changed body composition by over 80 pounds.....not to mention the pounding that you would take at 100 pounds overweight
Pick any cardio that you can enjoy...I like to bike and added interval training to it then moved to new cardio once I got to used to that.....added stairs and jumping rope in circuit training...
I have averaged about 1.5 pounds lost/week over the entire period and I was REALLY motivated after not being able to lose weight for several years until had pituitary surgery....Didnt have any emotional overeating or other issues.....So I dont know how realistic it is for most people that have huge lifestyle changes to do 2 lbs/week or more over a long period....
I still think you have to split it up....make smaller changes and smaller goals...once you meet those, take a little time to pat yourself on the back and make new ones...

| trying to lose weight, any help appreciated :D Posted: 6/28/2009 6:07:09 AM | | Focus on lean protein meats. Research low glycemic carbohydrates on the internet. Replace the unhealthy (hi glycemics) to low glycenic choice ie. replace white bread with dark whole grain or pumpernickel. Eat an occassional sweet potato instead of regular white potatoes. Replace white rice with brown rice. Replace pasta with whole grain pasta. Eliminate sodas. "Graze" during the day. Eat nuts.....almonds, raw peanuts are great snacks. Low glycemic fruits..........strawberries, apples, oranges, grapefruits...........great for you. Consciously anyalyze your diet and remember it all starts at the grocery store. Don't do anything you can't continue the rest of your life. This is about a true lifestyle change or your results will be only temporary. Exercise for at least one hour 4-5x/week. Brisk walking at least an hour a day is great if you're not into the gym. Remember.......this goal of 85#/8 months might be a little lofty. It took you a little longer than that to gain it all. Look at inches, not just the scale. Stick with it! Contact for additional help. good luck! | |

| trying to lose weight, any help appreciated :D Posted: 7/8/2009 12:27:23 PM | I do no grain, flour or gluten, almost no sugar, no booze, lots of water, no processed food, only fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, no junk,4 oz. of meat protein a day. Less than 1000 calories a day and walk/jog 5 miles every morning. Really watch the starch and carbs. A little rice, and I mean a little. No chemicals, no fast food. Small meals 4 or 5 times, nothing after 5 P.M. Only keep healthy food around you and don`t go out to eat much.
If you follow this, it will come off, but it take discipline. I have such a hard time taking it off and this is the only thing that works for me.

| trying to lose weight, any help appreciated :D Posted: 7/8/2009 1:42:43 PM | ^^ Cut 500 calories from what? Their current diet that is possibly 1000 calories over what they need?
Or cut out 500 calories from your current diet but actually you are on plateau and your calories are spot on?
Noone should set a caloric need unless they have an idea of their RMR added to their daily ouput. Thats going to vary for everyone.

| trying to lose weight, any help appreciated :D Posted: 7/8/2009 11:19:34 PM | Hi there, I have been working on becoming more healthy. Rather than running though, I took up walking. It is much easier on the knees. When I started in November, 5 minutes had me sucking wind and thinking I was ready to meet my maker. Last month, I completed a 10K walk in under 2 hours and was still able to run errands the rest of the day. I currently walk 2 hours every morning and then head back out in the evenings time permitting. With a major change in my diet, I have lost more weight than two ladies who had bariatric surgery around the same time I changed my lifestyle. Also, they have now stalled out and I am still losing.
So, for those newbies to exercise....don't give up. I will caution....buying a good pair of running shoes is essential and a pain. It took me visiting a LOT of stores before someone would help me. The little spandex sweeties and hs track champs would look at me in disbelief and basically say, you have GOT to be kidding. You want what? Running shoes? Why? But, I ended up with some great Asics and am actually on my second pair. Never wore out a pair of tennis before.
Currently I'm training to walk in a half marathon in January. It is 13 miles and must be completed in under 4 hours. No problem.
The other goal is figuring out how to do strength training. Walking, that is easy. Slip on my walking socks and shoes and head out the door. The other stuff. Yikes. My body and I are still in negotiation over that.
Good luck and keep us posted on how you are doing. :)

| trying to lose weight, any help appreciated :D Posted: 7/9/2009 1:09:20 PM | Simple: consume fewer calories than you burn. Easy? No.
A friend of mine lost 30 lbs. in a year without trying. I asked how and he said, "I began making better food and exercise choices." It really is that simple but actually doing it and sustaining it aren't easy. If it were, America wouldn't be having an epidemic of obesity.
Forget fads and crash diets. You can't sustain them. You need to shift your eating and exercise habits in a way you can maintain so you don't end up back where you were.
Tufts University did a year-long study following people on Atkins, Ornish, and the Zone Diets. One is high protein/fat, low carb, one is high carb, low fat and protein, and the third is kind of in between. The results? Everyone who actually followed the diets lost weight. What mattered most was not which eating regimen they followed but how closely they stuck to it.
Calories really do matter. Don't believe anyone who tells you differently. Start keeping a food diary. You will be amazed if you start writing down every single thing you eat. It will start making you think about what you are eating and you'll see exactly where the calories are coming from.
Get adequate lean protein and plenty of vegetables. Start paying attention to fiber. Fiber fills you up but not out. A half cup of cooked rice and two cups of broccoli have the same number of calories. However, a half cup of rice seems like not much. Two cups of broccoli - even I can't eat that much of it and I love broccoli! Start cutting back on fried foods, fatty foods, refined foods, and calorie dense foods.
Research has shown that calories that we consume as liquids are not as recognized as "food" by the body so don't depend on things like protein or meal replacement shakes. You are much more likely to get hungry sooner than if you eat something solid.
You can get exercise without going to the gym. Walking is a good start. As you get accustomed to it, walk faster and for longer periods. There's a book called Strong Women Stay Young that has a good basic weight routine you can do with hand and ankle weights at home. (Do NOT walk with ankle weights!) A set of hand & ankle weights is not that expensive. Look for other activities you enjoy doing that get you moving. If you enjoy it, you're more likely to continue doing it. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park further away. Walk or bicycle to places instead of driving. When someone wants to get together, suggest a walk instead of eating out or drinking at a bar.
Allow yourself to loosen up and have a treat periodically. If you don't, you'll feel deprived and won't be able to sustain it. Some people will be strict during the week and ease up a little over the weekend. As long as you don't go overboard, something like that may help you stay on track.
You want to look for a shift in your diet and activities that you can sustain. Take small, realistic steps. Good luck.

| trying to lose weight, any help appreciated :D Posted: 7/9/2009 1:19:25 PM | | I have always felt the caloric intake was not the best way to loose weight or maintain health. I still feel a healthy balanced diet that is high in vegetables and fruits is the best way to go. Lots of small meals. But counting calories, nope not me. Watching my cholesterol intake, oh yeah. That is a biggy with me. I have hereditary problems with cholesterol. I agree better choices is the way to go. | |

How far do you live from work? How about riding a bike to work. That's what I do.Sometimes I walk.I live 3 miles from my job.Luckily,my route is a bike path that runs along the Potomac River,so it's a pretty sweet commute.Don't get weights in your home, you'll get bored with that real quick, unless you can find a couple friends who would come over and work out there regularly.
The biggest mistake people make is thinking that eating less will help you lose weight.Quite the contrary. When food isn't coming in to your body it goes in to conservation mode.Makes pretty good sense if you think about it.
Or you could just take up smoking :P

| trying to lose weight, any help appreciated :D Posted: 7/9/2009 3:43:29 PM | Counting calories or a food log? havent done it once over the last 15 months....I just eat when I am hungry and have a list of things that are available to me in my diet on a daily basis, some things that I can eat once every few weeks, and some once every couple of months....Learn to eat only when you are hungry and not emotional or bored is the key.
My body even told me to eat more during my recent plateau after doing a lot more weight lifting....
And constant change is the key....as others have suggested, changing up every month is a good plan....the more muscle building exercises the better and move away from longer cardio sessions as soon as you build yourself up...
