Muhammad Ali v Bruce Lee

Ahhhhhhh, I did a simple google search, wikipedia wrote: Lee also competed in many martial arts competitions around the world winning every one almost flawlessly, defeating internationally known martial artists from many different countries.
..and yes, he was a professional, fighting was his profession.

An unsourced Wikipedia entry bears no credibility at all. Look, this has been discussed and debated for decades. It's not a new topic. There are 8 - 10 "fights" credited to Lee in his lifetime, and every one of them are marred by controversial and conflicting accounts. None of those "fights" took place in any reputable tournament with standard martial arts rules.

Bruce Lee came from a family of actors and performers and participated in productions since his childhood. He did legitimately train in Wing Chun (the family discipline), Kung Fu, and later invented Jeet Kune Do. He kept himself in shape and occasionally taught others; but was never a competitor. LOL at people buying into hype which was deliberately spun to capture movie audiences.

The larger man usually wins in a fight. Given that Ali, in his prime, was one of the greatest boxers who ever lived, it's not credible to think that Lee (who praised Western boxing over ALL TMAs) would have stood much of a chance against Ali.

Lee looked great on screen. That's it.

Muhammad Ali wasn't exactly a slow poke.
Ali had probably the fastest hands ever for a heavyweight boxer, though he was never a great powerful puncher.
Ali's hand speed is legendary.

Bruce Lee was tremendously fast but it's hard to tell exactly how much power he could really deliver to an opponent almost twice his size.
The infamous " 1 inch " punch not withstanding.

Ali took a solid left hook from Joe Frazier in their 1st fight, was knocked down and got right back up. Ali lost some fights, but to my knowledge he was never knocked out by anyone.
If Joe Frazier can't knock you out, Bruce Lee won't do it either.

This is crazy. Mighty mouse would have kicked both their butts! Can't forget Barny Fife. How about Super Dog? No question about Superman or Batman?

Both are / were elusive, fast and powerful it would all depend on what style of fight it was. Both were a thinking man's fighter and at times philosophical and poetic. But I will say IF only fists were allowed Ali would leave Lee eating through a straw.

If it's in a ring where Ali could corner him...Ali easy. Ali had great speed and quickness along with grace and power. Bruce would have a little more speed and quickness but not near the power. Ali was one of the greatest fighters of all-time...Lee is more celebrated for what he did in films. Ali in a knockout...first round.

And sting like a bee.
But I fly like a dragon
Because I am Bruce Lee.

Bruce Lee killed Chuck Norris. Nuff said.

Bas Rutten said it best about how Lee would fair in MMA today.

Actually, I think that's probably a pretty fair assessment.

I have to agree with the caveman logic on the side of picking Ali. Great fighter, and obviously much stronger than Lee, but a lot of Lee's philosophy on fighting would have taken that into consideration. He knew how to use someone's strength against them.

I don't know about caveman logic figuring into the assessment .. which would require Ali to JUST be BIGGER, as opposed to also being a skilled opponent ... and who wasn't exactly slow, uncoordinated, or out of shape either.

Basically, ALL ELSE BEING EQUAL, the bigger predator eats the smaller predator.

Look at it this way ... do you honestly think a bigger you could beat a smaller you?

When it comes to reality fighting, well, the old tale of the samurai vs. the peasant comes to mind ... a tale that demonstrates something of why the Viking Age Norse said of their chief war-god that he "... often grants victory to the lesser man". It's ALL about recognizing oppurtunity and taking advantage of it. No amount of technical or physical assets can make up for a lack of this "oppurtunism".

I personally don't know who would win between Ali and Bruce. Too many unknwn variables like ... is it a competition or reality? What sport? Life or death? Maybe someone should write the tv show Deadliest Warriors with this one? They can do math and thereby fortell the winners of such contests! Makes you wonder why anyone even bothers to fight competatively anymore! lol

Just watched the classic fight...Foreman vs Holyfield, Foreman outweighed him by 51 pounds. Holyfield wins....no the bigger predator doesnt always win.

The OP's question was concerning who would win in their PRIME. Foreman vs. Holyfield is not good support in an argument for smaller guys winning, because Foreman was far past his prime when they fought. And as Kenpo said, a 100 pound disparity is much more disadvantageous to the smaller fighter than a 51 pound disparity.

I think Bruce would win.

He was so fast and elusive.

Basically I think for Ali to win he would have to get lucky and catch Bruce with a hook but it'd be unlikely.

It'd be interesting if Bruce were alive & in his prime today to see how he would fare in the UFC....I think he'd still be pretty darn good.

Some of the responses here are amazing. It just shows that you can market someone as a superman and people will believe it for decades. Lee HIMSELF said that a boxer would tear up the majority of traditional martial artists. Lee said that. If you factor in the 100 pound weight difference between Ali in his prime (at his ideal weight), and Lee in his prime, it's not much of a fight. Ali would have pushed his shít in.

Lee acted in films and perfected the one-inch punch. He deserves credit for that; but that didn't make him some kind of futuristic wrecking machine. Three words.....Wong Jack Man---that was Lee's last public challenge. Why? Because Lee got owned. Also, it's funny how there are no dominant JKD practitioners in MMA, San Shou, or in any other well-known, commercially successful combat sport today.

This is ridiculous to even think about. Bruce Lees movies were staged. In his movies he had guys attacking him from behind and still beat 50 or so people coming at him from all angles
Give your self a reality check they were movies not fights Bruce Lee didnt have eyes in the back of his head.
Look at kick boxing when there were plenty of both boxers and martial arts guys fighting in the same ring 90 percent of the fights were won with the hands with
knock out punches because your hands are much faster than your feet.
Last I remenber it was Gord Racette that was world champion kick boxer in the heavy weight division a former professional boxer who happened to change sports because he wasnt a very good boxer.
Ali wasnt just fast with his hands his ability to change directions when dancing in the ring for a man that size was uncanny. The abilty to drop his hands and slip a punch was magic, the only other boxer who could do it was Sugar Ray Leonard and he was tiny in comparison, yet mimicked Ali's style.
No one ever saw Ali at his best he was serving time out of the ring.
Bruce lee what a joke maybe he'd beat Ali in a movie but not anywhere else.
If Lee got hit by one jab lights out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the only chance for Bruce lee to beat Ali would be to take out a knee but I doubt he'd get close enough with out getting killed.
the difference in reach alone would be the demise of Bruce lee.

Bottom line is one guy was a heavy weight boxer, the other was a light weight martial arts expert. How you could have the two fight is a mystery. What common ground you might find is the ground upon which they stood .

There's no doubt the movie Bruce Lee would destroy Muhammad Ali.
But in real life...... ?

How about Bruce Lee vs. Larry Holmes, or Sonny Liston, Joe Lewis , Rocky Marciano, or even Sugar Ray Robinson or Marvin Hagler ?

Every quality professional boxer above the welterweight division would kill Bruce Lee in a real fight in the ring.

Now, if the two were to meet in a ring, under the Marquis of Queensberry Rules, no doubt Ali would win, very easily I might add. If the fight was outside, not in a ring, and they didn't have to wear gloves. Bruce Lee would kick his ass. Remember, he would be able to kick Ali, probably snap his leg. Ali was fast, however, outside I do not think he would be able to get near Bruce Lee, providing he had the space to move.

In a street fight, Bruce Lee might stand a chance. In a boxing ring with boxing rules? Ali would crush Bruce. Under MMA rules? Not sure.

Its a silly scenario but it would depend on any rules being applied to the fight.
I'm sure Ali did fight a martial arts expert at some point in his career. Iwas only a boy but watched most of his fights, can't remember who won but it was under rules.
Bruce lee would probably win the fight however due to his lightning speed and ability to kick, however if Ali managed to get a good punch connected to either Bruces head or body i'm sure it would stun Bruce allowing Ali to finish him off.
Obviously Bruce was very inteligent and would know this therefore he would adopt a strategy to keep out of reach and danger.
Personally both would have too much respect for each other and not take the fight.

Thank you........ the voice of reason as neither would stoop so low as to star in a carnival act. Where these threads come from is a total mystery?

Both of those men are/were great fighters. But I'm gonna go with Bruce Lee. Although nobody could box like Ali, Bruce Lee could break bones, snap necks, and be sneaky at the same time. The man beat Chuck Norris in "Return of the Dragon." If he can beat the legend himself...enough said.
