When you become a citizen of the U.S.A. you denounce any allegiance to the country that you came from.
There is nothing wrong with being proud of your ancestry.
What's so wrong with "I'm an American of ______ descent."?

When you become a citizen of the U.S.A. you denounce any allegiance to the country that you came from. Absolutely not true! While there may be some countries that America doesn't want to share citizens with, others are quite acceptable to the US. I was not required to forfeit my other passport when I became a US citizen, nor was I required to "denounce" the country of my birth. Dual citizenship is perfectly acceptable in the United States.
One of the amusing ironies in all of this name-calling is that the long-time natives of America are called Indians due to the assumption that they were on the Indian continent. A consequent of some dubious navigation by one of America's so-called forefathers. Despite all of the politically correct names such as Native American, First Nation etc. I understand that these folks still prefer to be referred to as Indians. Maybe that is their way of having a chuckle at the white-man's expense as white-(people) struggle to erase the constant reminder of their error under the guise of political correctness. | |

Serodio identified himself as a “white African-American.” He says Duncan later told him never to refer to himself as that again, because it was “offensive” to others in the class.
What a crock of shit. If anyone should be offended, it should be Mr. Serodio for being told that claiming his own natural heritage is offensive.
Hopefully, this will be another dagger in the dying political correctness beast.

Why in the world would a white man need the help of the NAACP. Or should a white man be entitled to black scholarships. I guess I am racists becasue I think black things should stay black. Obviously white people don't need special groups like this becasue they never encounter racism being that they are the majority.

There is a Miss America contest...black woment were not allowed to enter so a Miss Black America contest was started(they are celebrating 40 years this year). It was considered racist to have this Miss America contest and not allow black women who were American to enter so rules were changed and black women were allowed to enter the Miss America contest. But the Miss Black America contest continues but white women are not allowed to enter. If the Miss America contest is open to all American women why still have a contest that is selective to entrants..especially since a great number of the recent winners and high ranking placements in the Miss America contest were black women. Does this not continue racism perpertuated by those who seek to stop it? It is still called the Miss Black America contest not the Miss African American contest. Should tthere be a contest for those who consider themselves black and one for those who consider themselves African?

Do you know that there are pageants for the various Eurocentric groups? There are the Miss Irish,Scottish ,German,Polish,Italian,Swedish,Greek etc.---American pageants. Are other ethnicities allowed entrance in these contests? If these requirements are based upon national origins , would someone of my heritage be eligible? You see although I am a black woman, I do have some Irish and German ancestry in my bloodline!!! Many "white" people have some African genes in their bloodlines and may or may not be aware of it..therefore, why don't they enter the Miss Black America contest and see what happens? 
As for your last question concerning the Miss Black and/or African-American contest, I think the "'powers that be" should take a survey and come up with a title that the majority of voters agree to. | |

I dont think this is quite right...The reason there were "Separate but Equal" orgainzation is not because "Blacks" had special rights, it was because, for the most part, Blacks were not allow to join some organizations such as Colleges and Universities, Law Firms, Doctor's and Hospital Boards, School Boards, Sporting Teams, Leagues, Home associations, City Councils, State Legeslaturs, Fire and Police departments, ect.
So inorder to promote their causes and to Network within their community Black folk(as well as other minorities) created Social, Civic, and Business organizations. When the racial bariers began to come down, these groups still existed and thrived out of tradition and the good works the preformed.
So if there still is a Queen of Soul Beauty Pagent, dont ask the feable question of "Why do they still Have that?"; understand that back in the day, before Vannesa Williams, Queen of Soul was their Tradition as it continues to be today... | |

In all seriousness, when do the 'typical' African-Americans stop being "African" Americans and just become Americans?
If we're talking about the "African" Americans who actually are descended from former slaves, their ancestors have been in the U.S. for literally hundreds of years, and in fact may well have ancestors that were living in what would **become** the U.S. before it *was* the U.S.
And yet, still not mere "Americans"-- and not treated like mere "Americans" either, to the point that some half-Euro half-Kenyan guy that grew up in Hawaii and Indonesia now qualifies as a symbol of the progress of...African Americans.
Are they African Americans if their ancestors spent hundreds of years in Haiti before moving to the U.S. in this generation, but not African Americans if they spent hundreds of years in South Africa but happen to be descended from Dutch colonists?
Vast numbers of the 'unhyphenated' variety of mere "Americans" are descendants of 19th and 20th century immigrants, not that they think about it any more than in a passing manner. | |
