^^^^^Please don't use sizes! I wear a size 14 blouse! No I am not overweight. My bmi is right where it should be. I know my sister is taller and wears 14/16. Size isn't an indicator of being overweight.

EDIT: To below, my sister is 6' and yeah, she wears 14/16 pants, skirts, dresses etc. Actually not positive where she is at with her top size right now. Last I heard 36DD...sooo

Dont stress on the size thing. you know when you're embarassed to be seen naked. If you feel uncomfortable or self consious about your weight, you probably need to lose some.

14 top? I was thinking more waist and hip. I doubt anyone would fault you for having a bigger top.

to eschec mat:

I am overweight & aware, trying to get into better shape; BMI has gone down 1 point! Yea for me!! but now I am stuck & it is getting harder. The last 3 wks have been unable to consistently exercise d/t prior committments & I miss it. But onward & forward...

I am 5"6". 38DD- there is NO WAY I am going to be less than a medium size for Tshirts or any other tops Skirts & dresses are large or XL- it depends on the way its made. Pants are another thing all together. I have 14 in one brand, 16 in another & a couple pair of jeans size 18 left over that are still too good to throw out.... the waist is HUGE...but they keep falling down so must be I have been doing something right!

and ... am well aware what the fashion industry has been doing "rearranging" sizes in womens clothes grrr.... I dont want to look like a fashion model... or movie star... thats a size 0.. look at the Enquirer next time you are in the grocery line.. 5'8"+ women that are 88# with their bones showing...can you say anorexic??

I've never liked skinny, but I can deal with it much more than obesed. As long as I can see some curves to a womans body I'm fine. Some people carry weight much better than others.

Have a conversation with several of you lady friends about what they are looking for in a man, and report back. If they are honest, physical characteristic will be part of the discussion - what you state isn't a one way street. BTW, you seem to have some of both so I don't think, men's vision should cost you any sleep.

Which I guess would give the average woman the upper hand, if only the average guy would look at her.

I agree with the above poster as well This site is filled with Shreks and shorties that claim they can't get a date. Physical characteristics matter just as much or more to the ladies.

The best and I mean the very absolute best device to use to determine if you are overweight/underweight or not is the good ol mirror ............. as long as one possesses the ability to be completely honest with yourself with what you see while leaving denial in another room.....

Let the mirror be your guide...... the mirror will (always) tell you the truth... whether you want to hear/see the truth or not......

The mirror holds no bias. The mirror is not judgemental nor is it prejudicial. The mirror never ever lies............... never !

What you see is what you got...

Of course this does not apply to people with mental/eating disorders like aneroxia. But for everyone else... it is what it is...

Sorry...but i'm gonna have to totally disagree with the whole BMI thing...it's all wrong because it doesn't take into account "body type". Body fat percentage is the only way to really tell what your healthy weight. I am 5'8", and at heathy 14% i am approx 200lbs...according to the BMI chart i should be aproxx 165-170lbs for my height...this would be impossible. My body fat would have to be almost down to 0%.

My opinion on this is that as long as the person isn't obese a few extra pounds are fine. My problem here is girls who look great as they are, but complain that they are fat when they obviously aren't, sadly it’s those girls who when they lose weight, then look dreadful, as their body needs that extra weight. Just be who you are, but if you get obese take steps to curve that if possible, as it’s not healthy.

I agree with caesarnick.

I also think that if you are comfy and confident then the weight won't be a problem, just so long as it doesn't affect your health.

When I can't carry you in my arms, when you grow a double chin, or when you're near 200 lbs. See? I'm not too picky.

Depends on the woman. I've seen some pretty heavy women looking smokin' hot and women half that size looking dumpy.

One lady on here was worried about her weight. When I looked at her profile she didn't seem all that big BUT, she had two shirts on and the white shirt underneath was exposed on the outside of her hips. Made her hips look gigantic! Lose the white shirt and she looks pretty good.

Unless you have the body of Angelina Jolie DONT wear those skin tight lycra (or whatever that stretchy stuff is called) pants. It makes even the slightly overweight women look frickin' huge.

There's no need to hide the weight but accentuating the negative is counter productive

I think it's hip to waist ratio that matters a lot. I believe around a 0.7 is considered most attractive by men. People with this include all different sizes like Marilyn Monroe to the very tiny Audry Hepburn and Kate Moss and also Sophia Laren who would fall in the middle. Like other have said it depends totally on how a woman carries the weight. I would assume if someone went too extreme on either end they would lose that. If you google it you can find out more.

it's the hip waist ratio that helps you have curves, but a woman can have that genetic hourglass shape at almost any size. the biggest issue seems to be does she have a flat stomach or not, no matter her "figure". other areas are important too but secondary to the stomach. that's why it cracks me up when these guys have to specify sizes, inches, shapes, because i've seen women of all different above who did have a flat or nearly flat stomach without the hourglass shape genetic pear. of course not all women do but some do. and some have the hourglass shape but not a flat stomach lol.

If you notice a lot of hourglass shaped woman their waist tends to be higher than other shapes so they can disguise the stomach fat more and it does not go there as much or below the belly button. I have I guess what is a hourglass and when I was about a 25 bmi my stomach was still pretty flat because my stomach weight was carried below the belly button. I just won't carry weight on my stomach above the belly button. I've had experiences where medically I had to gain a lot of weight and was told for sure it was going to go to my stomach to protect my vital organs and instead my body did not get the note and put it on my behind. My body must be ingrained not to carry fat there or got mixed up about vital organs.
I can't say though I have guys knocking down my door as is why I'm here. I think I'm just starting to get confidence and no matter what the shape the confidence matter most. I think it's a peice of what guys find attractive and not an be and end all.

What do men consider overweight?

It would be hypocritical of men to hold women to a standard to which they themselves do not measure up. I've been a forum junkie on POF for about 4 years. I'm just under 6' tall (5'11 1/2"). Over that time. I've gone from 175 lbs up to my present 190 lbs thanks to a new desk job and 55 - 60 hour work week. I'm not happy with myself at the moment, but my women friends say I still look great and don't need to lose weight. So I guess it's the old self-perception thing. An anorexic person can look like a skeleton with skin stretched over it, and they still want to lose weight, and there are other people (especially on POF) that list themselves as "average", and their photos show someone who needs to lose 30+ lbs! As far as women go, if a woman's waist is bigger around than her hips or her top, I think she needs to lose weight...

I would definitely draw the line at average/curvy. My definition of an overweight woman is somebody that obviously weighs more than me, and not to mention a few jellyroll layers that shake and jiggle every time she walks or move.

Of course thin is attractive, but not to the point where she's a walking skeleton.

These threads always contain post that reference woman's ability to see beyond physical appearence and look at the "real" person...well judging from divorce statistics and the fact that there are alot of women on dating sites it would seem that the personality trumps all method might not be working out so well.

The fact is you can't fake looks, fat is fat, short is short and ugly is ugly....you can however fake a personality for a period of time.
I cannot count how many times i have heard a woman say..."he din't used to be that way"....or "he used to be so (insert personality trait here) but now he's different....well he was always what he is but he was smart enough to fool you.

I suggest that those who claim to be so above it all when it comes to looks and who look down on those who seek physical attraction in a mate as a standard stop and think that perhaps their methods are not without fault or flaw...becauase like i said they are here looking and trying again.......just like the rest of us "shallow superficial jerks"

Ok Dave (message 183) if all it takes is looking in the mirror then that is great news and I'm happy with what I see. However my scales don't always agree...................LOL

I don't think alot of guys realise that once women (like myself) have had children we can often get most of our bodies back in shape except for that bit of tummy from having children....................so please be gentle and remember that!!

I'd define "overweight" as "unhealthy looking". It depends on shape more than anything. Two women with identical height/weight might carry their weight entirely differently - the overall curvy woman would look healthy while the woman with skinny arms/legs and a pot belly would look unhealthy.

A lot of people will say that weight is a shallow thing, but I don't agree. One's shape says a lot about how you treat your body. Sure genetics plays a big role in how a person handles their pounds (like my example above), but there's always a choice, a person can always trim up.

Without any prejudice you can calculate your body mass index. This well tell you whether you are within the acceptable normal range of variation or not:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Body_mass_index_chart.svg

Obesity is a harmful illness which shouldn't go untreated.

I would not suggest this. BMI is deceptive unless you're rather average. It will rank athletes as overweight/obese and those with slender builds as underweight.

As long as your BMI is under 25 you are NOT overweight. End of confusion.
