what do men consider overweight?

from browsing some of these posts i'd say that what men consider as 'overweight' has less to do with bmi and recommended dr's weight, and more to do with personal preference - what's overweight/underweight to one, might be just what another is looking for

because it is so subjective, i'd advise being comfortable in your own skin or work to get that way, so you're happy with how you look or how fit you are... make that the priority rather than trying to match any supposed 'men's ideal', because there doesn't appear to be just one

Well, having gone from what was referred to as sickly skinny a few years ago to having to take serious drugs to gain weight to fight an illness - I like my shape now. Overweight by society's standards yes, but I swim, walk, hike, and get out and about and my physician is happy with my weight. So, until he tells me otherwise, I'm okay with my body...

Besides, I've had more compliments from men at this weight more than I ever did skinny sick looking...

for every man, there will be a different answer. the standard of good health is usually if you can grab a handful of blubber anywhere on your body, you're probably too fat.

Generally speaking.. Overweight women are those that are heavier and LESS attractive to us than our dream ideal of the naked body we fantasize about having.

If you start with the health-insurance industry height/weight standard chart that has been around LONG before the obesity craze.. you'll see what is GENERALLY looked at as UNobese/overweight.

To most men.. chunky or thick. starts at 10 lbs over that chart
Chubby is at 20
Heavy starts at 30 lbs
Fat starts at 35 to 40 lbs
Really fat starts at 45
Obese starts at 50 or more.

The taller the girl, the more weight she can carry without wanting to take her bowling

Now if you take the classic hourglass of a 12 inch difference between the chest-waist-hips.. the less of a smaller waist, no MATTER the weight starts to make a woman look chunky or thick. THEN men want to see toned and in shape, since you cant wear a corset comfortably anymore.

Then.. there's the whole FATASS issue.. Those women who are something like
32B-24-42&up are just some fatass booties. Now.. Jlo can carry it.. ever notice how almost NONE of her movies show her ass? I mean NONE.. and that one time on the red carpet that DID show it.. whew.. the NEWS it got.

I mean.. THAT is the hottentot tribal influence ya heard?

Now.. Women dont mind an overweight man.. as long as his WALLET is just as overweight as his belly. Same goes for hair, teeth.. wrinkles.. or any other NON-GQ quality in a man.. If we men have a HUGE wallet.. we can even have a half-smoked cigarrette for a Peni and still get the hot chick.

guys.. WALLETS RULE.. Fatten THAT up boys.. The chicks will come a-runnin.

I await the hatemail

Oh.. the opposite of FAT is not anorexic either. Not by a long shot

I haven't read the whole long ass thread, but what everyone should NOT do is expect to try to reach to a "average" bmi level.

BMI is a horrible way to judge your weight, the worst there is and in my eyes has no merrit.

Everyone I've seen who actually falls into normal would appear to be more underweight, or just really skinny, and those who look to be average all into overweight most of the time. I am 6'2 215 I can't remember what my bmi is, but apparently I'm suppose to loose around 40lb. The thought of me loosing 40 pounds doesn't sound very healthy...

Quit confusing the ladies, *smile* It's not rocket science. I ran up your stats for you, lol. For you to fall into the non overweight range you'd need to get down to 194lbs (lose 21 lbs). So it's not as bad as the 40 lbs you thought. 6'2 194 is very much NOT sickly thin.

Also people need to measure their height exactly (get a friend to help + press your hair down) because if it's done sloppily it can be off an inch or more which will throw off your real numbers/ratios.

But it's wrong.

BMI at a glance is useless, or worse, deceptive. It makes a lot of assumptions.

It's not 100% perfect but it's better than all this subjective judging because many people would rather use the excuse that since the BMI is not 100% indicative based on all body types (or body builders) then it should be disregarded and they should be allowed to live in their delusion that they are NOT overweight. To discount it is just looking for an excuse. 'Oh no it's not 100% accurate for every body type in existence therefore I shall shoot my scale and get mad when many people find me sexually unappealing and blame THEM for not accepting me'

I can recommend a great site for anybody who's SERIOUS about eating right and losing weight and not looking for excuses.

I would have to agree that BMI is the WORST judge of what you are...apparently, I am right on the cusp of Overweight and Obese (almost 30 BMI). But, I have been a competitive wrestler, and have lifted weights almost my entire life. I am curvy (36-27-44, but I have a clearly defined waist and no overhanging fat anywhere on my body...I also don't have the luxury of being the typical pear shape, as my measurements would say....as I have wide shoulders and huge arms for a girl (not floppy huge arms...like muscular arms). So, I KNOW it is inaccurate for me...as well, I took a second to find some GOLD medal Olympians and their BMI's...

Shawn Crawford (USA) Sprinting (200m)
(Overweight: 177cm, 81kg, athlete BMI=26)

Mark Lewis-Francis (GB) Sprinting (100m Relay)
(Overweight: 183cm, 89kg, athlete BMI=26)

Matthew Pinsent (GB) Rowing (Coxless four)
(Overweight: 196cm, 108kg, athlete BMI=28)

James Cracknell (GB) Rowing (Coxless four)
(Overweight: 192cm, 100kg, athlete BMI=27)

Steve Williams (GB) Rowing (Coxless four)
(Overweight: 189cm, 96kg, athlete BMI=27)

David Cal (Spain) Canoeing (C-1 1000m)
(Overweight: 183cm, 91kg, athlete BMI=27)

Khadjimourat Gatsalov (Russia) Wrestling (84-96kg)
(Overweight: 180cm, 96kg, athlete BMI=30)

Artur Taymazov (Uzebekistan) Wrestling (96-120kg)
(Obese: 189cm, 112kg, athlete BMI=31)

Ryan Bayley (Austria) Cycling (Sprint)
(Overweight: 181cm, 84kg, athlete BMI=26)

Odlanier Solis Fonte (Cuba) Boxing (81-91kg)
(Overweight: 180cm, 91kg, athlete BMI=28)

Alexander Povetkin (Russia) Boxing (over 91kg)
(Overweight: 188cm, 91kg, athlete BMI=26)

Ihar Makarau (Belarus) Judo (90-100kg)
(Obese: 180cm, 100kg, athlete BMI=31)

Yuriy Bilonog (Ukraine) Shot put
(Obese: 200cm, 135kg, athlete BMI=34)

So, I think Body type is according to your own perception...BMI is the worst way to judge it.

ZOMG lady!!!! lol There is a distinction between COMPETITIVE ATHLETES and the rest of us. Here's how it works: if you are a high performance ATHLETE IGNORE BMI!!!!! For everyday people however it is in fact accurate. Don't worry nobody thinks someone chiseled with MUSCLES is "fat". More muscles means you can support/carry more which in turn is a natural counterbalance to the increase in mass/weight.

The mirror holds no bias. The mirror is not judgemental nor is it prejudicial. The mirror never ever lies............... never !

Sweetie, I really hate to tell you this, but virtually every woman knows this to be true ~~ Some mirrors make you look like a horror show, others don't, and some flatter the sox off ya!

I was always surprised that The Hecht Company in DC ever sold a woman a single piece of clothing ~~ every mirror in their changing rooms belonged to class I.

Live. Learn.

Not every body. I dated a guy for a while who was on the Morgan State Football team. Something over 6'4", and gorgeous. The DC police department wouldn't hire him because he was "FAT." I'm here to promise you that man did not have one ounce of fat on his entire body. Period.

So much for "nobody."

This is a subject that will always make men seem shallow or weak. You see if I were to tell you that overweight starts at a certain height and number of pounds then I would come off as being shallow and if I toyed with what is commonly referred t as being large but not specifically identify where the cut off between being big and being overweight I would come off as being weak because I wouldn’t put a definite on size differences. However I would rather seem shallow then to come off as weak and after some long thought on this subject I will conclude that every man will see women in different ways. I will offer my opinion on this subject and hope I do not offend anyone but the best way to look at what is what when it comes to women and size is to look in the back of mail order catalogues. There you will find depending on what company you are looking at a size chart that will offer sizes according to bust, waist and hip sizes they will follow up with a height chart to determine if a woman is considered petite, average or tall then they correlate all of that information to small, medium, large, extra larger and double X as well as putting the number sizes into the chart.

Now based on that bit of information I like to believe that if your wearing a medium you can consider yourself average. Its also safe to say that most men are or would love to have an average sized woman or smaller. However we would allow a large woman to be a part of our lives given some circumstances. As insensitive as I may sound I understand that people go through changes; childbirth is probably one of the biggest. So if a woman wears a large and has a child or two most guys are accepting to the changes that pregnancy has brought about. But lets say she is wearing a extra large then we become concerned if she is really a BBW (Big Bold Woman). There are some men who really go for larger women but I'm talking about averages here and not exceptions. Smaller women don't suffer the same fate as larger women mainly because with a small body men wont have a problem until you're so small that you look like a child or your skin seems to be falling off your bones (in other words sickly).

I would say that being on either ends of the spectrum is, liking to men who cant hold a job or have a place of their own; you know what I’m talking about the proverbial looser that a smart woman shouldn’t date. I would like to also take tis time to point out some traditional facts about society and how we look at women. The beauty and fashion industry sells us on the image of a flat stomach though more and more a bump is what a casual observer sees. So if you have a small bump, fine and dandy as long as you know that it means you will be doing crunches for weeks to work it off. But women are the customers to the fashion and beauty industry and as the customers you when you buy the magazines, dresses, makeup or accessories you say you’re comfortable with the image they are selling. Also for years and even today a man is measured by his success; the woman on his arm reflects that success so if a heavier woman were on the presidents arm most of us would look at him as unsuccessful. Deep down in the backs of our subconscious this is why men seek the thinner women in this country. The double standard is that if you are fat it’s acceptable even for women (look at Oprah Winfree) but you still have to have a partner that is in shape or at least fit looking. On a more shallow note which I realize will get me looked down upon (but I'm just being honest) its said that you can close your eyes and imagine a different face but you cant feel a different body no matter how hard you try. Point is if your on the larger side and a woman get with it and do the right thing so that you don't have to worry about if you are too large or not.

Oh please! When will you people get this? 'Curvy' is not 'a few extra pounds' ! I was 'curvy' at 5'7, 125 lbs and my bones were sticking out ! CURVY refers to a person's natural build. It does not in any way mean fat or fat covering your muscle or body! Women that call themselves 'curvy' and are over American Size 14-16 are not curvy! People who are underdeveloped or never developed a female figure have a boyish body - flat hips, flat chest. Some people are naturally underdeveloped, most of us changed at puberty. I went from being so thin and tall I was called 'bird legs' by my lovely mother to burdgeoning into a 40 (+) C cup.

Let's draw the line in the sand...doesn't matter how tall a woman is...when tyres from the passenger side of my car is worn quicker, that dudette is one fatty boomba, when she jumps up that scale nearing 1 ton...she's a fatty boomba, when she uses my toilet and cracks the bowl, she's a fatty boomba, when my mattress is lopsided even when there's nobody there, she's a fatty boomba.

The double standard is that if you are fat it’s acceptable even for women (look at Oprah Winfree) but you still have to have a partner that is in shape or at least fit looking

I know what you mean man. You talking about Jamie Foxx? I hope he treats her like any ordinary chick sho me yo ass ho...ewww, I can't imagine it. Oprah is like everybody's mum.

There is no such word as 'thick'. That means nothing and was invented within the last decade. I love how women claim to hate how they look, yet they go in films and on tv and out in public showing nearly all of their (often not attractive) bodies. If you hate your body shape, you don't do that. They obviously think they look good. (ha ha hah ha!) My god, those tight pants have got to go.. body pollution! Have some respect for others.

Look in the mirror, men, and get off your fat ass. Stop WATCHING the sports and get out and PLAY them so you will get in shape and look athletic and maybe the women will want you.

Those making comments are males who are either so thin as to have no muscle (ha ha!) or those so fat they look perpetually 9 months pregnant. DEE-Sgusting Oh yes and those are the ones approaching tall long blonde hair, longlegged me. You have got to be kidding.

Stop drinkin the beer . There is NO excuse (other than health or medication) for a man to be fat. NONE. Men have way more muscle than women (fact) and therefore burn more calories and fat and they eat like pigs, most of them. You know what's REALLY odd? My sis and I have commented and noticed since the mid-90's that most men have children with (and therefore sex with) and marry really overweight -bodiedwomen, stay with them, give them all their money, holidays, Christmas etc. I mean overweight to the point of 5'2-5'4 200-plus pounds, while the same married men stare at US in public and the stores. Hmm.. so, the less -attractive and fat, the more you get married and have sex. That's what we have seen in US of A since the early 1990's. The women don't care when they men are unfaithful because guess who gets the nice warm house and the money? Ha ha. Just look at any talk show and find the guy kneeling and begging obese woman after obese woman, or a plain, no makeup woman to marry or stay with him. What is going on?!

The president comment: Excuse you? Look at some photos of Harry Truman's wife and the others of the past.Princess Diana married one of the richest men on the planet (if that is how you are judging success) and even when thin, she was still much taller and bigger than other women.. that is the frame you are born with! You can't move bone structure, baby, so deal with what you've got and try to stay fit!

Some people really are bigger framed.. even when they lose weight, they still have wide shoulders or will look bigger.. so it is something to watch as if you gain fat, and are a tall bigger build woman, you will look bigger than a petite 5'1 woman. So it is not about the weight or number at all times.

Slapshot: Well I can feel my ribs AND see my collarbone and after age 30 I got a fat stomach, so there goes that theory! What u all gotta say now? There IS no category.. my shape change came from health condition. Oh, and eating is PASSION mm... when you guys taste and do as good as that pizza ice cream or whatever the women are eating, they won't need to eat it.

That's a good question. I have been floating around 240 pounds for a while, which I consider overweight, even though it's not too visibly noticeable (mostly just a big belly).

Sammy, if you think Kim Kardasian is 'curvy' you need help. All these hollywood stars and singers when you see them in real life are SUPERSKINNY. The camera does literally add 10-20 lbs. Oh and then don't forget airbrush and photoshop. I saw this one singer Lumidee (who in her music video looked practically obese by hollywood standards), when I saw her in person though.... she was friggin TINY... around 5 ft and maybe only 90-something lbs. Even the fittest and thinnest gal in my sorority was bigger than her. I was astonished. The hollywood standards are not something to judge real women by... not in a long shot... b/c that level of smallness or narrowness only comes from 1. starvation 2. genetics.

Trying to gauge what "Men" think is overweight is like trying to gauge who "Men" think is the best guitar player. It's absolutely too subjective.
I tend to prefer against the grain, probably because of what I'm accustomed to. I grew up with three thin sisters and a trim mother. My brother and I were thin. My dad was thin/small/average. My cousins were all average or thin.
Every relationship of the romantic sort I've had, were with thin, even skinny, girls.
My first wifey was 5'0" and 88 pounds. She fit right on my lap quite well.

My ex of 27 years is 5'6' @ 115. Effortless spoon. (Was)
I'm 6'2.5" and gaining, back up to the 175 that I'd been since high school.
I'd lost 55 pounds the fun way: got sick and went into hospital and nearly checked out.

I see profiles where they've got, "curvy" and it looks like they've taken a bit of liberty with the nomenclature. "A few extra pounds" sends this boy a-runnin. Too many are usually sporting multi-chins and their biceps are the same size as my thighs.
Muscle takes up less space than the same weight of fat, so it's different for everyone's weight/height/bone structure. I know overweight (to me) when I see it, and I know I don't wanna see it neckid.

Exciting1: "well, most of the men i know are in the southeast, and i totally am trying to make a move north. the social environment is a big factor. the guys that i've had the most success with have been from the north."

I agree 100%. Replace "southeast" with "Texas" (or at least include it in the statement) and that's my experience. I am SOOOO moving back [north]east, where college educations and fitness are the standard.

But lets not confuse being overweight with "failure". Look at Laura Bush..... I dont hear too many people criticizing her appearance.
