Posted: 7/7/2009 7:11:39 PM | That's got me worried as one of my friends sons just got it 3 weeks ago and she said it was scary as hell.
Young healthy teen males suddenly spiking to 105 fever and then developing the other symptoms. They sat on pins and needles and had the retro virals cause it got pretty bad. Luckily both boys are ok and pulling through.
I'm thinking this would be a good time to get that flu shot for it this year when they come out with it... Supposedly their gonna mandate it be given to everyone. | |

Posted: 7/9/2009 2:31:47 PM | I think the true magnitude of this pandemic will become apparent in the fall months. I have a feeling - judging by the spread patterns of other diseases I've studied (bit of a pathology nut) - that we're going to see an absolute explosion of cases around October.
I fear the worst affected areas are those beneath a western standard of medicine. It's already spread to Aboriginal communities in Canada and Australia, as well as the middle east. | |

Posted: 11/1/2009 4:56:21 AM | Had to respond to photopilot1's post back in may where he gives the old conspiracy theory about former secretary of defense Donald Rumsfeld owning the company that produces the swine flu medication.
Sorry bud. Wrong company. Rumsfeld was Chairman of Gilead Sciences Inc. which was the company that came up with the Tamiflu used for the Bird Flu, and is now being used a lot for severe general flu treatments. The company that is producing the H1N1 Vaccine is GlaxoSmithKline. Rumsfeld is not with that company.
Give the guy credit though. As I read more about the guy, he had a knack when he was in the business world of taking companies and turning them around into profitable companies. The guy is a business wizard. They had the wrong guy as Secretary of Defense when he should have been head of Finance. Obama should tap this guys brain to help them get out of the recession down there.

From what I can gather, this particular flu (whatever you want to call it) that's the cause of all the recent furor is a virus that originated from a pig farm in Mexico. It seems to cross species very readily (from pigs to humans back to pigs or turkeys), which seems to indicate that it can mutate very quickly. Even if you are vaccinated against it today, the vaccination may not protect you in a few months time if it has another mutation. The vaccination may protect you from getting a more severe case (if it mutates and you are infected).
It is a very interesting flu. I have never had any flu in my life. Nor have I ever been vaccinated. I'm thinking of getting the H1N1 vaccine, but now with the talk of vaccine shortages etc., maybe not. Mostly because my eldest child (a teen who refuses to be vaccinated) has mild asthma, though I can't control (obviously) what happens at his school.
What am I/is my family doing about it? Well -- may be vaccinated. Otherwise practice good hygiene, avoid sick people and drink fruit juice with vitamin C (helps boost the immune system). And not panic, especially if one us comes down with it! | |

Nonsense. It cost me more than a thousand dollars in lost work. It lasts for weeks, up to 6 weeks of downtime. Its killed 100 people in Canada so far in its first wave. Teenagers have died. Its no ordinary bug.

Fish oils(the best is Carlson's Norwegian lemon flavored fish oil) also
reduce immune overreaction. One teaspoon a day should be sufficient.For
severe symptoms, one teaspoon twice a day. Antioxidants of various kinds
also help-this includes, quercetin, curcumin, grape seed extract,
vitamin C and natural vitamin E. A good multivitamin/mineral such as
Extend Core (www.vrp.com) is also essential.Feel free to spread this

our vaccine is produced by different labs ... has different adjulants ... if any.
we have a variety without ... mainly for pregnant women.
it is not mandatory to get a shot.
most flu in Ontario so far that has been tested has been H1N1 ...
so if you have had the flu ... you are now immune
most cases are mild .... mine only went to a fever of 100 for 2-3 days .
weakness was about 2 wks.
still have some chest congestion 3-4 wks but doesn't affect working ability and cough very rarely.
problem was they were refusing to test everyone with flu symptoms so they don't really know how much was out there and what kind.
now they have decided to test people ... after 20% of the population has already been sick.
I see a huge waste of resources and money and panic by not testing all through the spring and summer ... we would not need nearly as much vaccine if we knew for sure which flu people got earlier in the year. [especially since it looks like it was H1N1 that we all got] a shot after the fact is a total waste of time and money.
This is another example of our tax dollars going south and shows how even with a prepaid 300+ million dollar pandemic contract we cannot keep up with a real pandemic. Too little too late [and we were one of the most prepared countries]

There is some amazing amounts of scared peeps out there and the turmoil over the Calgary Flames is laughable considering other teams have made specially prepared press releases concerning when they got their shots and whether or not it had inconvenienced those at higher risk. | |

It's just one of many forms of the flu. It's been around for a long time. Strains of flu come and go, they mutate and adapt. Humans adapt also.
H1N1 is not a big deal. It's the flu. More people will die from driving in cars and getting in accidents. Perhaps you should be more paranoid about that. | |

I agree with you 100%. Sports teams, or just the average joe... if you aren't in a priority group.. stay the heck out of the line. I didn't realize that Asthma made you part of the priority group.. which means my daughter, my mom & i should all be getting vaccinated.
I have a lot of mixed emotions.. there hasn't been enough time for proper long term testing.. however...
Having seen how my daughter went from a bouncing happy go lucky kid at 8:20 when she was getting on the bus.. to the kid I picked up at 11 not feeling well.. to the kid that I took to emerg at 5 because of shortness of breath.. I have to say.. I was scared..
They are no longer testing in my area.. if you present symptoms, they treat you for it.
I would rather they test, and say YES or NO.. either you have it or you don't have it.. I was told my daughter is 50-70% positive for H1N1.. that still leaves 30-50% that she is just not feeling well.

Posted: 11/20/2009 6:33:21 PM | I can understand peoples mixed feelings about this bug, and it is confusing. its also difficult to determine what is media hype, and what is the actual situation on the ground.
I am a front line healthcare worker, and let me tell you, this bug is nasty. I have seen some people come in with flu like symptoms, and they are sick, but they do get over it. But I have also seen it turn perfectly healthy young adults into people breathing like they have been smoking for 70 years.
Yes, there are unanswered questions, but i think there are always unanswered questions about all outbreaks. Im not going to sit here and tell anyone to either get or not get the vaccine. I personally got it because I am in the high risk category for my profession and several other characteristics I possess. What I will tell people is do your research. Make an informed decision for yourself and your family. Dont just make this decision based on media speculation, or heresay. But we should also be prepared to deal with the consequences of our choices, whether we get the vaccine and suffer adverse effects or whether we dont get it and get sick.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out however.
