| I am not a senior! Posted: 5/22/2009 9:22:25 AM | LOL true story: I was about 35, and went in to some thing where a young man was checking me in. He was about 21. He called me "Ma'am" and I didn't really like it, but I wasn't going to say anything. My companion--a woman of 23--said "OMG I'm going to CRY when I get to the age where guys call me Ma'am!" He then proceeded to check her in, "How may I help you, ma'am?" HA HA!
Guys are in a no-win on what to call women--ma'am, miss, young lady. There is no respectable answer that will not offend. Hey, ma'am is infinitely better than "Sir", which I get called about once a month.

| I am not a senior! Posted: 5/23/2009 2:32:11 PM | You're only as old as you feel ! If you begin to think "old" ( I'm too old to do ..... ) , or dress old , or limit your behaviors based on numbers - then chances are others will percieve you as old too . 45? you're just a baby ! | |
|
| I am not a senior! Posted: 5/23/2009 3:04:33 PM | Baby! I'm still baby for my mother!
Op...at your age my oldest child was only 8 years old! I think...I'm going to be a senior soon...over 60! So...enjoy your 15 years of journey!

| I am not a senior! Posted: 5/23/2009 11:04:30 PM | Up until today, I'd never been described as "older-looking than I am"; I certainly don't FEEL elderly, and that AARP stuff gets thrown into the "circular file" unread.
However, I have to state that the few photos I have (and posted) are not very good, but to date they're all that I have. I'm now going to have a professional take some!

AS I AGE [author unknown]
When I was in my younger days, I weighed a few pounds less. I needn't hold my tummy in to wear a belted dress.
But now that I am older, I've set my body free; there's the comfort of elastic where once my waist would be.
Inventor of those high-heeled shoes my feet have not forgiven I have to wear a size nine now, but I used to wear a seven.
And how about those pantyhose they're sized by weight you see, so how come when I put them on, the crotch is at my knees?
I need to wear these glasses as the prints were getting smaller; and it wasn't very long ago I know that I was taller.
Though my hair has turned to silver and my skin no longer fits, but here on the inside, I'm still the same old me, but on the outside I'm not what I used to be.
I'm better | |

| I am not a senior! Posted: 9/1/2009 6:06:55 PM | I think it is 62-65 or 66 now that qualified for SS, ooh, I didn't dream that you are a senior until you come a barging in denial on the forum. I thought you are a stalwart youngun..... | |
|
| I am not a senior! Posted: 9/1/2009 6:27:23 PM | Who said at 45 you're a senior? At 50 you can join AARP. At 55 you can get a discount rate on cruise ships. I really don't know what kind of 'specials' you get at 45.

| I am not a senior! Posted: 9/1/2009 6:54:05 PM | "Why is 45 such a pivotal age? "
45 yr old women are most likely (not all) done having babies. Those who still do are the exception that proves the rule.
I think that is enough reason to have a different forum because I am not looking for a baby daddy.

| I am not a senior! Posted: 9/1/2009 7:19:08 PM | We live in a unique time in history where there is nothing to call people who are 45-75......certainly not SENIOR...although there are those who go downhill sooner than others. So many times that is just a matter of choice, as most of us are well aware.
If not senior, then WHAT?? I too hate to be labeled, however, our particular generation is different than those that preceded us in a few ways. I think we still have plenty to contribute....

| I am not a senior! Posted: 9/1/2009 8:28:48 PM | | It's a bunch of silly stereotypical crap that a lot of people cling to for some strange reason. You're as young or as old as you feel, if you still have a lot of energy at 80 and you feel great then you are still young. If you're overweight, unhealthy and have medical problems at 40 then your getting old, it's as simple as that. Don't let anyone tell you different. | |

| I am not a senior! Posted: 9/1/2009 11:45:00 PM | I turn 50 next month and I’m not a senior either, I don’t intend to start acting like one for at least another 10 or 20 years. Grow old disgracefully; that’s my motto. Of course, it kind of goes out of the window when a delivery man thought I was my son’s granny. Cheeky s*d, I can only assume he’d left his glasses somewhere | |

| I am not a senior! Posted: 9/2/2009 5:41:42 AM | The Federal Govt defines "Senior Citizen" as any person age 65 or above while acknowledging that some business' now extend Senior privilages to younger people.
Mom defines Senior Citizen as anyone who wakes up next to a warm body and rolls over to take another nap instead of having sex. Always listen to your Momma.
|
| I am not a senior! Posted: 9/2/2009 4:38:46 PM | I got offered my first senior-citizen discount a couple of weeks ago at the ripe old age 0f...... 49. I told the cute young kid (who - to stereotype right back - looked about 12) behind the counter that unless they lowered the senior citizen age to 50, no, but thanks anyways. We both had a nice laugh over it.
But it did get me thinking.... perhaps at his age, we all look old.
|
| I am not a senior! Posted: 9/3/2009 12:58:20 PM | I think "senior" starts when some media thing labels it. Like Denny's offering a senior discount at 50.
Of course, you can always hit on a Mcdonalds hottie (barely 18) and watch HER reaction to you. I didnt read your profile and it shows no picture. I dont know if you are a man or a woman. So the McDonalds scenario is for you if you're a man.
If you're a woman, guys will do ANYTHING, even a senior like you!
Irony RULES. | |

| I am not a senior! Posted: 9/3/2009 1:42:33 PM | I've been sort of enjoying all the senior discounts that have flowed down upon me lately ... after my hours were cut ... the 1st day I was home, feeling sorry for me ... the gas company spontaneously came out and winterized my house for free! sealed doors and windows, fixed things ... that was the first ... really shocked me ... I mean, my entire life, no one's given me anything for free ... I've always been a "pay my own way" sort of person!
so I got to thinking about this ... and I called the electric company, told them what the gas company had done and asked if THEY had anything for old ladies ... THEY gave me a huge monthly discount on my bill!
on a roll, I called the garbage folks ... they couldn't do anything but referred me to the city who will probably give me a discount on my water bill!!!
... ... ...
thank GOD there are SOME perks for being old!!!

| I am not a senior! Posted: 9/3/2009 1:48:01 PM | Congratulations and lucky you Molly! I'd be willing to bet money the utility companies in Florida have no such discounts for "seniors." | |
|
| I am not a senior! Posted: 9/3/2009 2:04:05 PM | LOLOL Molly! That is fantastic! I think I am going to try that.
I just turned 50 on the 1st and I am excited to get the senior discounts now, but I will not relish being called a senior. I will be a senior when I decide to let my hair go grey and not before. Besides, physiologically, my hormones are still at the level of a 19 year old, according to my doctors. Anyway, most people never believe I am anywhere near 50, so I am probably safe, until I whip out the AARP card and then I get to be showered with compliments LOL Hey, I will take them at this age.
As far as being called ma'am, I do not understand the insult in that. I felt it weird in my 20's, but not insulting because it is just a more formal way of communicating and usually it is done on the phone so they can't see you.
After 30, I damn well expected to be called ma'am by younger folks. I deserve the respect and do not find it an insinuation of being "old."
I get really pissed when I get a lecture for being respectful and calling someone ma'am or mister. When they are truly old I always want to shove a mirror in their face. I recently had a woman get angry because I told her she could have the senior discount, now this lady was CLEARLY over 65. She lectured me about how I could give her husband the senior discount, but SHE was not a senior.
I was like, ooooooooooooooooooooookaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy.
|
| I am not a senior! Posted: 9/4/2009 9:30:42 AM | Ha ha haaaa, Molly! I think you've changed my perspective! LOL!
And SmilingSalmon --- LOL @ shoving a mirror in old peoples' faces! It is risky to guess that someone's a senior though. Some people age really well, and some really horribly. Especially in sunny climates - you can tell the old sunbathers by their sagging skin, especially in places like TX, AZ, CA, NV, etc. It's really sad how some people have destroyed their looks and risked their health to look "good" (tan) in their youth.
Like you, I look younger than I am, and people often think my son is my brother! Guess I should appreciate it.

Not senior Not young Tweener? Works for me.
tweener has already been snagged by the kiddos. A tween is someone aged 10-12 that is too young to be considered a teenager and too old to be considered a child. They actually have books out there to help "tweens" bridge the gap.
I think for the most part everyone thinks they look good for their age... and certainly they think they act younger than their age. In the end...it's only what other people think (when it comes to dating) about you that's important.
|
| I am not a senior! Posted: 9/4/2009 12:59:21 PM | you could look at it out of another paradigm. a "senior" position in a corporation is an indication of power and success. just view the world as a multi-national corporation--where you can make some changes or a difference!
i think when i feel good and look good, i get a kick out of being called a senior. the diner here gives discounts 55+ and they carded me. what a rip! if i was drooling in a nursing home, nothing you called me would make me happy.
my kids think it is sooooooooooooo funny that their mom is a senior citizen. it slows them down some and they see they have lots of time and it ain't gonna be over at age thirty.
just give it a smirk and say/do something naughty if you are finding yourself "labeled" and your instinct is to REACT. instead rather than being defensive, give the label some pizazz.
ps demographically and for grouping purposes when presenting medically related data, it "used to be" that women were of child bearing age until age 44. maybe that is where you are picking up on the difference in turning 45? so, look at it, as you are now entering freedom from childbirth and time to have FUN. still, may women can give birth well into their 50's and little nine year old girls are now getting their periods. the life expectancy for them is sadly, lower.
