| Texting n Driving Can Kill Posted: 8/11/2009 6:14:53 PM | Some people will not do things like text and drive because they know they are morally wrong. Some people follow the laws without other consequences. Many people will not follow the law without consequences.
I have heard proposals like if you get into an accident and it can be proven that you were using a cellphone, you will not be able to insure your car for X number of years. Because many people are like children and need to see that there are consequences, there needs to be a tough consequence in place.
Driving while distracted is very dangerous and something has to be done.
The war is definitely on all gadgets GPS and DVD players.

BE,,,do you actually believe that making a "rule" or a "law" actually makes things safer out there????? You do know there are rules against drunk driving ,,,correct??? Still hundreds die a year because of it. You do know that you are suppose to wear a helmet while driving a motorcylce or bicycle??? Course ya do. See anybody lately drive by without one on???? I have always said and always will contend that rules are for people that follow them.
Yes Walts, there are still drunk drivers on the road. We can never expect 100% compliance.
Since you have conveniently raised the topic of people that drive while intoxicated, in violation of the laws, I'll rebut that since the laws prohibiting drunk driving have been introduced the number of people that have ceased to drive while impaired has increased. A much larger proportion of the driving public is now far more responsible with alcohol than they were 20-30 years ago.
So to apply the same logic to driving while text messaging, we can never expect 100% compliance to the laws, but many people who currently do drive and text message will curb that behaviour following the passing of the legislation.
I don't have a problem with the citizens of the province trying to reduce the risk of death and injury. I use our roads and so does my progeny, as do you and your progeny.

Thank you BE,,,you just proved my point that people have to be told or threatened with fines before they start doing what they know they should be doing anyways. This cel phone "discussion" has been going on for over at least a year now throughout North America. But still, phone use is up in vehicles,,,and accidents on the rise because of it. Wouldn't ya think in an "intelligent" society such as ours, that the discussion itself would stop the majorty from using their cels????? It still amazes me, the amount of "N" and "L" drivers I see doing the texting thingy. I know, as a parent, what my daughter was told about mixing driving and cel phone use(among other things). I, as a parent,,,made sure she knew in no uncertain terms of the consequences of her abusing her driving rights and the responsibility of driving a weapon. Now,,,, if "I" could take the time and explain,,,,I am pretty sure the majority of parents would be able to do the same, without a cop or any goverment around.
Personally,,, I believe that if the goverment is gonna make rules covering certain stupid acts,,,why not make one generic law against STUPIDITY????? Cause if ya think about it,,,that is what most new laws are about,,,,,fines against people being stupid and not using common sense. If you caught doing something stupid, you gain a big frigging "S" to put on the back of your vehicle, and another to put on the front of your residence. Kinda like the shame tactice some places tried to use against the drunk driver who constantly got caught drinking and driving. Now THAT would be cool.

| Texting n Driving Can Kill Posted: 8/12/2009 8:48:50 PM | Now that I know how dangerous texting and driving is I've reduced how often I do it.
Now I only text and drive after I've been drinking.

my girl friends make sure to take away my cell phone whenever I've been drinking I wish my friends would take my laptop away after I've been drinking because I type the most idiotic stuff while drunk and my stupidity is immortalized on the internet.

| Texting n Driving Can Kill Posted: 8/14/2009 4:52:22 PM | the hellishness of ones perceived immortal stupidity may very well be someone else's heavenly pleasures...
as long as both adhere to common sense and not text while driving we all should be safe

| Texting n Driving Can Kill Posted: 8/14/2009 6:47:23 PM | Well now you've really done it WWR! Everybody has taken this so seriously they are not even posting on this site! Hello Hello, anyone out there? Has every body ran away to Australia? | |

| Texting n Driving Can Kill Posted: 8/16/2009 10:00:02 PM | Back in message number 4 it dealt with the current laws in which you can be charged with 'driving with undue care and attention' or whatever the wording is. Personally, I don't text because I don't know how and don't care to - that's what phones are for. But - I need to be accessible in my car and, during rush hour, there is nowhere on my route to pull over without getting smoked by someone. .... and the commute is about a 5mph crawl anyway...
It was already pointed out that not just texting is distracting - try dropping a lit smoke in your lap, or hot coffee, or jelly from a doughnut down your blouse, or trying to apply mascara/lipstick whatever in the mirror, change a CD or fiddle with the radio.... exactly, where do you stop.
If you are distracted and cause an accident, fault/fine/the end.
