| Are you a snob about anything? Posted: 6/1/2009 5:17:20 AM | | lots and lots really, only buy one brand of tea/coffee, rarely use shop brands for anything to be honest. Never shop at Asda for food as I don't like the store at all but apart from that it's Tesco or Sainsbury's - I like the ethics of Co-Op and Waitrose too. | |

| Are you a snob about anything? Posted: 6/1/2009 7:40:51 AM | I don't consider most of these replies to be snobby - to me they're about liking different things and having different priorities. I would only consider it snobby if someone ALWAYS had to buy expensive, top branded names just because they were expensive. Or selected their friends based on jobs or incomes or the size of their house or type of car.
Having once sat through a very uncomfortable date being sprayed by soup and counting someone's fillings while he ate his steak and told me about his job at the same time, I have to say I'm picky about good manners - if someone is considerate and well mannered I can ignore a lot of other stuff.

Posted: 6/1/2009 8:09:59 AM | | I agree that 'snobby' isn't the right word and is used more instead of is there anything that you have set particular high standards for that you are unprepared to compromise on, I was not trying to call everyone snobs, myself included. Snob is a derogatory term but served the purpose of the thread. I agree minx with your definition of a snob more than someone who wont drink supermarket branded coffee.

| Are you a snob about anything? Posted: 6/1/2009 9:59:29 AM | Am I a snob about anything? Nah. In the context of this thread I'm a snob about everything.
I refuse to compromise on the quality of food, tools, women, clothes and porn.

| Are you a snob about anything? Posted: 6/1/2009 11:11:14 AM | I don't think I'm a snob at all but one of my best friends has been ribbing me for years about being a snob.
My worst one is manners & peoples social behaviour, I cannot abide bad manners etc & find it highly embarrassing if someone does not know how to conduct themselves appropriately in any situation.
As for food wise has to be decent proper cheeses, coffee (on the rare occasions I drink it) & am fussy on wines.
Holidays, well I couldn't give a damn, love a all hands in camping, back to basics, treking hols, sporting hols, right through to appreciating a very good hotel & excellent service.
I personally don't think I'm a snob, I just know what I like & what I don't like & also what I find acceptable & what I don't!

I also have inverse snobbery with people who think they are better than others. Again, it costs nothing to be polite and civil

Tea...lol..when I was young my best friend's family now back residing in England because of Indian Independance got a small crate of fresh bestest tea from their ex plantation every month. When you have tasted the real deal and sorry folks, even Twinings by the time it gets to you is stale, when you have tasted the real deal...it suddenly makes sense of the tea wars etc. I now live in Australia and having been a sort of tea trained taster I find the only decent tea here is the one grown in Australia called Nerada because it is rarely more than two months old and yes I do check the date of expiry. Always leaf tea...tea bags even the posh expensive stuff is still basically floor sweepings. And it is milk first because otherwise the milk is scalded and the taste is off. Ladette to Lady made me pmsl when they did it the wrong way round...haven't a clue. And never stir the pot with a metal spoon it bruises the tea and taints the taste...you swirl it...honestly...make it both ways and you will see what I mean.
And I thought I was a Tea snob!!!! I feel as common as muck now.

My ex had precisely your background and her accent either opened doors or garnered some sort of half-arsed disdain, depending on the listener and their inherent issues.
Consequently, I speak in a Ghanaian accent so's people get so confused that they're so busy trying to work out what I've said they don't have a chance to pre-judge me from my true accent (c0ckernee, with a hint of profane).

Prefer to carry a M & S carrier bag than an Asda one
Hate hearing geordies speak on TV - even though I am one ! And although I am an unemployed single mum at the minute I really cringe when I see them flocking to local cafe or mcdonalds after they have dropped their kids off at school - isn't that awful that I think that !

Decent loo roll - cannot be doing with the cheap stuff. Try and buy quality in appliances or furniture as they normally will have to last a fair while. Never let yourself down in public.

| Are you a snob about anything? Posted: 8/24/2009 12:38:46 PM | Once, in London, I saw a middle aged lady exit Tesco's, remove a very neatly folded Harrods' bag from her pocket and proceed to transfer all the Tesco Savers products from the Tesco bag to the Harrods one. Now that is what I call high standards. She was then approached by two rather burly security guards, but sadly as far as I could see they let her on her way. | |

| Are you a snob about anything? Posted: 8/24/2009 12:44:45 PM | Im a wine snob. There I've said it. I'm glad its out in the open. Seriously though the looks I get off the barstaff in Liverpool when I turn me snobby nose up at the Blossom Hill...rather drink my own vomit ....which is what usually happens if I drink the red wine in a certain Irish themed pub in town. Urrrgh. | |

Quite right too......you don't want them dating men like daddy!!
No, I'm not a snob.......MUCH! I'm just discerning, but unfortunately daddy didn't teach me to be discerning enough when it came to men but I'm working on it it.

| Are you a snob about anything? Posted: 8/24/2009 3:41:08 PM | To me the word 'snob' has other connotations other than preferences for one thing over another. I looked up the definition of the word.
1. One who tends to patronise, rebuff, or ignore people regarded as social inferiors and imitate, admire, or seek association with people regarded as social superiors.
2. One who affects an offensive air of self-satisfied superiority in matters of taste or intellect.
1. a person who tries to associate with those of higher social status and who hates those of a lower social status
2. a person who feels smugly superior with regard to his or her tastes or interests: a cultural snob [origin unknown]
Do you consider it being a snob or just having high standards.
I suppose one man's rebel is another man's freedom fighter. There are people who you learn to avoid. You do not know everyone so you come to recognise signs and indicators. Then you distance people because they appear to be of a type incompatible with the path you are taking through life. Your distancing may be described described as being snobbish. On that level, I avoid problems by being a snob. I am a snob for people who are bullies, violent, cruel, thieves and indulge in many forms of anti-social behaviour. I regard them as inferiors so in respect of them I definitely am a snob.
I would probably avoid Falstaff, but maybe not regarded him as a social inferior. So avoidance is not always a facet of snobbery.
The word 'snob' is more to do with how you regard and treat others.

I don't have a problem with accents but dear God, if the word has a 't' in it then please make an effort to use it when speaking... Thing is not Fing .... Something is not somethinK... Thirty is not Furreee...
And "we was" and "I done it" as well! OMG they drive me absolutely bonkers! My eldest son, in particular, has a thick Sowf London accent and I'm forever correcting his grammar: "You didn't 'done' it, Finlay... You DID it." Grrrrr.......
