| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 2:56:55 PM | Just a thought and please don't slate me for it....
What if there's no such thing as "naturally" fat or thin and its just a state of mind?
I mean, what if our size when we reach the age of awareness determines how we deal with our eating habits.
I'm 5'9 and my ideal size is a 12, but for the past few years I've been a 10 and happy. I went to the doctors the other day and, when weighed, found out I'd put on a stone since the last time I was there 3 months earlier! I immediately went into salad mode in a mad flap and I'll soon be a size 10 again! Unfortunately for me, like another poster earlier, I put it all on round my middle too, so I end up looking like a bloke with a beer gut!!
I wonder if people who are overweight when they first become aware of their body image just resign themselves to the fact that that's how they're meant to be so don't panic so much when they put on a bit, thus piling it on until it gets way too much and they realise its got out of hand?
Just a bit of food for thought maybe? Or maybe I'm completely wrong. Please feel free to tell me either way. Just be gentle cos I haven't had cake for a while !!

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 3:16:51 PM | Didn't they say that by the time you are 12 years old, the type of body you have then will determine how you are for most of your life?
I've only had a few long term relationships, but each one of them has been size 8-10, and after a year gone up a size or three. Only one did anything about it. I think when in a relationship some people cease to look after themselves. When not in one, some people don't bother and some do. I think it's like smoking: they want to do something about it but haven't the motivation.
Maybe it's generally linked to a more relaxed 'don't care' attitude that we see in young people?

fat is a word that is usually unwelcome in conversation ...
What about a fat wallet? a fat pile of cash?
If your not happy with yourself then I guess you need to try to do something about your not enough or too much weight. When I was at college and working out 3 days a week I could eat anything nowadays I have to be careful how much I eat else I start to put on weight.
The main reason kids seem to be overweight today is that they dont walk to school I used to walk to school and back everyday :)

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 6:05:53 PM | Think is toby they only live quarter of a mile away from the school gates. If I had kids they'd not get fuel wasted on them unless it was lashing it down with rain. I'd buy em a bike too. How can you not have naturally thin. It is perfectly natural to be thin.
If size 14 is average then that makes 6 8 10 12 and 16 18 20 22 acceptable depending on body height and build right? that makes 6 8 10 and 12 thin. ? I know theres charts that say this, probably online somewhere.

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/3/2009 6:15:37 PM | Jordan may be naturally slim but have you read interviews with her where she said to lose weight after having kids she went on this juicing diet where all she drank was fruit juice. Who wouldn't lose weight under those conditions? To be honest I really don't care about the reasoning behind it. I believe some people are natually thin. My mum struggles to put weight on and has done all her life, no matter how much she eats. I put weight on easily but after a long break thanks to a broken arm I've started exercising again, I swim every day and I've started running again. I would no more give people stick than for being thin than I would expect people to give me stick because I'm not. Everyone is different, even at a size 10 or 12 I won't look thin while other people do, maybe some people can look at someone while walking down the street and know what dress size they take but I'd find it impossible. | |

In some respects perhaps thin people who can shovel junk down their throats should be regarded as dangerously at risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer etc. I seriously doubt it as medical research shows that heart disease, stroke and some cancers are related to obesity!

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/4/2009 10:24:02 AM | Heart disease, stroke and some cancers are not soley attributable to obesity, alcohol and drug abuse, poor diet (not necessarily one that is high in fat or calories but one that is low in essential vitamins and minerals), a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, stress, family history and even your wealth (or lack of) and where you live are also significant contributors. Obese people don't all have clogged up arteries. Not all of the fat you take in through your mouth shows up on the outside, some of it sticks to the lining of your arteries and around your internal organs.
I saw an interesting documentary about 3 years ago where a woman had the fat inside her body measured (ie around her heart, liver etc) and her cardio vascular function tested and she was in a bit of bovver to be fair, yet she was a size 12. It worried me to be fair and made me rethink my views on what I ate and how much exercise I took.
I know thin people who are not as fit and healthy as fat people too. I think it's wrong to imagine that only fat people get such conditions and thin people are in for a long and healthy life even if they don't exercise or eat healthily. There are health conditions related to being too thin also - it's not all bad news just for larger people.
I think there is something in your earlier post though. If you are fat (say a size 16) getting fatter isn't perhaps such a big issue - moving gradually up to size 18, 20 etc etc. Whereas if you are a size 10 and you become a 12 you may be more inclined to do something about it and get back to size 10 before it all gets out of control. However this obviously doesn't happen for everyone, there are plenty of big women out there (16 plus) who were once a size 10 so some of them don't manage to get it back under control before it goes well out of control.

My youngest daughter is naturally thin (size 4) is the one at the local carvery that really piles her plate up high, eats it all, plus a pudding too and doesn't even have a full tummy bulge to show for it!
I used to work for a lady who was the same as my daughter...because she was thin she ate what she liked. Loved her sweets, fats & junk more than most because she never put weight on. A couple of years ago she went to the docs for routine blood tests and found out her cholesterol was sky high. A few months later she was sent for some other tests (scans I think but don't quote me on it cos i'm not completely sure) which showed that her arteries were clogging up due to her awful diet!
My father-in-law died from heart attack due to blocked arteries after having a quadruple bipass dispite being thin his extremely poor diet was the death of him!
I think naturally thin people can be so easily lead into a false sense of security. Just because you're thin without dieting doesn't mean that you're less in danger from over indulging in unhealthy food.

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/4/2009 11:50:06 AM | The thing I have noticed is that people seem happy to say to me , 'oh your so thin/slim ' and yell it out in front of a whole room, when I have a problem with putting on weight. I find this really embarrasing. But this rarely happens the other way around in polite social situations, people do not go up to someone overweight and say, 'oh your so fat/overweight' . | |

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/4/2009 11:56:15 AM | ^^^^ I observed something today. I was having lunch with a friend in a location where most of the lunch time customers are regulars and kind of know one another.
A woman walked in - people said hi, that was then followed by someone saying"Have you lost weight? You look like you have?" She replied obviously quite embarassed to have all eyes on her now "No I wish I had" and hurriedly sat down.
Another woman who had been sitting eating got up to look at the deserts and chose a huge piece of cheesecake as she sat down someon said "Look at her eating that she never puts an ounce on" She replied obvioulsy quite embarassed to have all eyes on her now "I wish I didn't, I'll be paying for this all week" and hurriedly sat down.
Which woman was the fat woman and which was the thin woman? It happens to both - judgements, conversation and comments in public drawing attention to someone's size are not reserved for anyone in particular.
Beachbabekatyvvvvvvvvvv OK I get you now, sorry hard day on the booze. :peace:

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/4/2009 12:14:21 PM | Some time ago I was dating a prat of a guy. He pulled me to one side and asked me if I realised that my daughter (the same one mentioned above) was annorexic. When I explained that she's a big eater with a little body he went on and on about me being in 'denial' and told me it was no good me getting angry with him because that wsn't getting my daughter fixed
Slim or fat (i'm the fat one in my house at a size 18/20): people's ignorant assumptions aren't gonna change a thing apart from my opinion about them

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/4/2009 12:18:41 PM | | ^^^^^techno wench in was a naturally very thin child upto the age of 13 when hormones kicked in, I was actually admitted to hospital when i was 9 years old as the doctors were convinced there was something wrong with me. But it seems to be a trend with the females in my family very skinny as children and teens then 20's upwards we become curvy. | |

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/4/2009 12:18:51 PM | I get told That I am thin to my face in public, and it is meant as a compliment. I have never heard someone go up to somebody overweight and tell them wow your fat isnt that great ! Its because people assume you want to be that slim. That is my point, people dont assume people want to be overweight so are more careful about being rude. | |

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/4/2009 1:30:51 PM | Beachbabekate ...i've been told by strangers & friends alike ... 'you look great fat 'you're definately Rubenesque not fat' 'the one good thing you have going for you is you have great hair'... and by a close male friend 'don't you think this girl needs to lose a few pounds?' the girls was in her bikini and about a size 10
All these comments say far more about the speaker than they do about the listener

| Naturally thin Posted: 6/4/2009 3:48:12 PM | I am naturally thin like mentioned above, but wondered how many like me smoke and if they have ever cut down or packed in for while and noticed if they put on weight?
I have cut right down for a while and put on nearly 1/2 stone in about 2 weeks, I really wish I could pack in the dreaded smoking full time
|
| Naturally thin Posted: 6/4/2009 3:54:16 PM | I'm exactly the same Duckster, but I found that chopping up fruit and using a c0cktail stick to just pick at it worked for me, kept my hands and mouth busy when I had those fag moments.
Otherwise its biscuits, cakes, crisps, anything you can eat easily and they can show themselves pretty quickly.
I did start again though, for other reasons, so maybe I'm not the best to give advice!

Longest I managed to pack in for was 10 years, but every time since has been few days to a couple of months.
Bit like my old school reports I guess MUST TRY HARDER
|
| Naturally thin Posted: 6/4/2009 3:58:58 PM | I think like everything else its a matter of self discipline.
I don't seem to have it with fags, but when it comes to my weight, I just won't allow myself to go over my ideal weight or dress size and I cut things out as soon as I realise I'm putting it on so it doesn't get out of hand.

They are just jealous, just accept that there will always be rude people in this world but their opinion is not important.
