| Traveling Alone? Posted: 8/30/2009 7:45:35 PM | | I went to Turkey this year with 2 friends but they only stayed a week and i stayed an extra week on my own & I loved it. Ive been about 9 times now to the same place so I know a few people there now and felt so comfortable and safe out there, safer than I do in England. Im only 19 & would do it again :) | |

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/3/2009 12:43:17 PM | | Dreams, I took an 11 night cruise alone for my 40th birthday. I had a blast! I asked for the late seating at dinner and for a big table. (I had read that those two criteria give you the best chance for meeting others.) My table mates were mixed couples and singles, but all friendly and fun. During the day I did my own thing. I often had breakfast or lunch in the formal dining room where you are seated at tables of four or six. I met some new friends that way. And times when I didn't feel like being social I just ordered room service and ate it on my balcony. I hate the single supplement, but loved cruising on my own! Good luck! | |

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/4/2009 11:43:20 AM | Wow sounds like you had an enjoyable time; I want to travel by myself; don't know where yet, but I want to get out of Canada; out of my comfort zone, and see what's going on in the world.. | |

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/6/2009 5:26:11 AM | | For me, travel is discovery and adventure, not so much tourism, so though I think traveling with a friend (someone I'd want to spend time with in any case, not just someone going with me so I don't have to go alone) is great, wonderful, there is a certain kind of excitement and challenge when traveling alone that adds a richness to the experience. | |

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/6/2009 7:33:26 AM | I want to travel in the upcoming future- maybe even travel alone- when I feel braver I will do it.. Hopefully it will be a good experience for me, whatever destination I go to..
Would you please give me some tips, pointers about how to feel comfortable travelling..?!

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/6/2009 7:39:23 AM | Would you please give me some tips, pointers about how to feel comfortable travelling..?! Well, I would say, first plan.
Decide where you want to go--someplace you are interested in visiting, not where someone else suggests you should go. A place that isn't too foreign at first; if you are thinking about international travel, my suggestion is to pick an English speaking country (if you are an Enlish speaker; if you speak a second language then a country that speaks that language is just as good).
Do some research. Get a good guide book (There is a thread about guide books)
Then just make your arrangements and go. The first trip, in my opinion, should be relatively short, a week maybe. Maybe don't attempt much or make it too complicated, that is go to just one destination.
I think you just have to get over the first time, and you have to be prepared for glitches, and need to learn to be adapable and accept challenges.
You need to be self-sufficient and okay on your own, not always needing company and support.
Get over the first time; it gets easier each time.
Even just a weekend somewhere is good.
I see you live in Nova Scotia. You could go to somewhere else in Canada or go to the States. I only know Vancouver, BC which is really nice. Or, on the East Coast of the States, I would recomend Washington DC, for 5-7 days it would be nice. It would be much easier to negotiate than New York and has a lot to see...lots of museums and lots of monuments, if you're at all interested in Americana. I'll bet Montreal is really nice, though I haven't been there I'd like to go.

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/7/2009 5:54:20 AM | I went to 2 places this summer by myself. First was to Moab, Utah, the ATV capital of the country. Flew to Salt Lake, rented a car and 4 hour drive. Arches national park is right there and Canyonlands close also. I always get up early, like 7 am, so I hit both parks, spent about 10 hours per day at each, hiking around. Another day I went south to Natural Bridges nat monument. I met a guy there at the bottom of a canyon who was fanatical about petroglyphs, which are drawings by native Anasazi inhabitants circa 1200 AD. We hiked around and found quite a few. Also spent a day at Capitol Reef NP, which was farther away but worth it. Hit 3 NPs in 3 days and lost 5 lbs.
I just got back from a week on Lake Tomahawk, WI where I had a house to myself, went jogging, biking, kayaking, fishing, gambling, drinking almost every day. It's very common to go to a bar up there and no one will think you're weird if you're by yourself, especially if you buy them drinks. I wear Cubs/White Sox/Bears attire and tweak the locals about the Packers. Also saw a lot of eagles up there and got within 20' of one.
I certainly would like to travel with someone but the amount of ground I can cover on my own is attractive. I just look at a map and decide that place seems interesting and just go there, rarely disappointed.

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/7/2009 8:26:56 AM | Hi Neckarriverlady, Thanks, that reply was just what I needed and was looking for. Suggestions and pros & cons. I love cruising. Either 2010 or 2011 January - March for 1 week I am going to figure out away to do just what you did. I will work with a travel agent and take a mystery trip of sorts. Because of the single rate and paying double I may not book until two weeks out and choose a cruise destination that way as they are cheaper the closer to the sailing date. Kind of like being spontaneous with a plan! I very much enjoy this forum. Happy Sailing oh yes and | |

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/7/2009 2:31:55 PM | | Hi NeckarRiverLady - I saw your handle and thought, gotta be Heidelberg, checked you out, yep was right. I was working in Frankfurt for 4 months 10 years ago for financial institution. Did travel all over Germany and other locales via the trains, which are fantastic. Rothenburg one of my favorites, Munich also. Did see Xmas markets in many cities and went skiing at Garmisch. Sounds like you have been to many places, would love to hear about them. | |

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/7/2009 4:40:37 PM | I love traveling by myself. I will travel with friends but I always end up going off by myself. I just traveled from South Carolina to San Antonio to Omaha and back to SC....just me and my dog. Loved it!!!
I spent 8 months in Stuttgart and loved taking the train everywhere!

there is a certain kind of excitement and challenge when traveling alone that adds a richness to the experience. Very true...although traveling alone can sometimes be...well...lonely...many times it can help one focus on enriching themselves. Be comfortable with yourself...and others may find you comfortable...

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/8/2009 8:12:21 AM | | I've had to travel alone for business and actually prefer it. I've had one or two people I was dating at the time ask to come along thinking that they would somehow be able to get a single room in the deal, which I just don't do. I guess they think in a different city, I'd be a different person. I usually just see travel now as a chore I have to endure for business. I rarely ever sight see. | |

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/10/2009 6:43:28 PM | I got my first taste of traveling alone in cruises, my friends typically like to do things that i was not interested in and vice versa.
I had a long distance relationship with someone in Texas and that ended after i had booked a non refundable flight this Jan, i still went drove around and had a great time, I'm really happy i thought positive and turned the situation into a getaway. Next month i'll be visiting Japan alone for a week, im a little bit anxious about that. But the truth is that i refuse to stay home just because my friends are poor planers, are too tied up or too broke to go somewhere, i'd just rather go by my self and suck in the experience.

| Traveling Alone? Perfectly Acceptable Posted: 9/12/2009 10:39:18 AM | I always travel alone unless I'm in a relationship. I'm not sitting around and waiting for company. One of the problems with my ex was that she did not want to travel to places I wanted to go to. So we missed out on a lot of trips I wanted to take and only went on trips that she approved of.
Now,if I want to go somewhere,I just go.

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/20/2009 10:19:18 AM | I wouldn't mind going to Scotland, or somewhere by myself, might be fun; hopefully an adventure... | |

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/20/2009 10:26:49 AM | I wouldn't mind going to Scotland, or somewhere by myself, might be fun; hopefully an adventure... Great choice. They speak English, so for a Nova Scotia person, it would be easy to function. I would get a rail pass for Scotland, do some research about where you want to go, Edinborough for sure, Glasgow, the Highlands. Stay in B&B's. It's pretty cold in winter, cold and wet. I traveled by train around Scotland, in July/August, and it was pretty cold then, and rain a bit too. But much better than traveling there in winter. The scenery is gorgeous. | |

how funny it is that people on a dating website, full of singles, are advising other people on said website to travel alone or the benefits of traveling alone. gee, what a surprise. i peeped other threads about the same subject as this one and that revelation just hit me. if i was in a relationship, i couldn't even imagine flying solo if i had the choice.
personally, i prefer to travel with someone for the company and to share the experience. but as a single man, if i gotta go solo, i won't hesitate to do it. just went to disneyquest a couple days ago by my lonesome cuz no one else was available to go with me. in retrospect, that was for the better cuz i was all over that joint. if i was with someone, they woulda slowed me down and i wouldn't have been able to do all the shit i did there. yet, i'm going back to a disney park with a friend this friday rather than solo. so, in my opinion, traveling alone could/should be decided on a case by case basis.
I completely agree. I live in europe, and have for 3 years now. I do this alone... I would love to travel with a significant other. I make random trips to here and there, next trip is to alghero sardejna. Do i really want to do that alone? Cant wait though :P

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/24/2009 3:12:11 AM | it would be great to have a s.o. to travel with...
but because i haven't one it's not going to stop me from experiencing the joy and excitement of travelling to a foreign land.
i'm not that keen on travelling with a friend, ...tried it once... big mistake. a sure fire way to test a friendship...lol
i'm not about to sit around waiting for an invitation to adventure...

| travel alone- Paris Posted: 9/26/2009 12:45:24 PM | I can count on one hand the amount of times I have traveled with anyone.
I love to travel alone. You get to truly explore..and do as you please...you don't have to plan or map anything out. I did Paris alone for the most part. ( my ex met me at the eiffel tower but only for the weekend).
Paris is a wonderful place to explore alone. Fantastic coffee...wine and art museums. They have over 40 museums in paris alone!! The train system is easy to navigate and contrary to what you may have heard about parisians hating americans..I felt very welcome. I enjoyed the locals and they enjoyed me.
so..go to paris!!! May is a good time.

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/27/2009 7:21:38 PM | I went to the United Kingdom for 1 week alone way back and had the time of my life. No restrictions, no schedule, just a first class train ticket took me from London to Inverness and back. Meet alot of interesting people and made good friends along the way. | |

| Traveling Alone? Posted: 9/29/2009 4:51:37 AM | I have done most of the world by myself over the past 10 years. It has it's pros and cons. I am currently back in China long-term again. My Mandarin is crap, so travelling alone in-country is a nightmare, but certainly something to remember. | |
