Katie Beans, I did Scotland alone last September. A great time to travel, didn't rain too much, and the crowds were down a bit. I did my research and found that it was better to rent a car as the train didn't go to some of the best places. Email me if you want any information. Another good choice might be Ireland, which I also did solo, but it is quite easy to get around with a train/bus pass there.

I am planning on traveling alone myself in October. I'm going to Miami for a 12 days. I'm going by train so I can enjoy the trip. Everyone I work with says I'm out of my mind, that I should fly, but I'm looking forward to the adventure. What do You think? Am I crazy or what?

I think traveling by train is great. I have done tons of traveling by train in Europe. In the States, I visited NYC and Washington, DC and purposely traveled from New York to DC by train so I could see the countryside. It's a good idea; imo your friends are the ones who are crazy.

Thanks for the support. I myself like to take the round about way to get to places. That's how you find interesting, out of the way places. I did travel by train from NY to North Carolina when I wrecked my car once, but that was over 20 years ago, and i don't remember much about it. I plan to rectify that on this trip.

I find traveling alone is hard because at night you are alone in a hotel and your sweetheart isn't with you and my brother use to do solo traveling and isn't better to have someone with you.

I don't think I could do solo traveling. I don't even like traveling to visit my family by airplane alone.

Any suggestions to help me to want to travel solo?

Nope. Either you want to or your don't. People who travel on their own w/o needing a companion, first of all, don't worry about being in a hotel or restaurant alone. But, also, it is a mindset that travel is not about being on 'vacation' but about challenge and adventure that, I think, separates those who are happy to travel alone from those who are not. If you are 51 years old and still have no desire to travel on your own, you are probably not the type to ever enjoy it. Why force yourself to want something you don't want? Easier to find someone to go with.

I find traveling alone is hard because at night you are alone in a hotel....

Me too....but it's better than staying at home....you never know what may cross your path...I've met more "memorable moments" (even if just fleeting) with strangers while alone...(not talking "hook ups" here)...just a few words spoken...casual....that can make your day....and theirs...

Sure, it's preferable to have someone with you, but compared to not going anywhere...I'll still go...and look for the places where I may feel at home....likeminded people on a journey...and adversarial places too! Just keep my wits about...

Re: Suggestions....be not afraid....nor afraid of yourself....there are millions more that are no different...me being one of them...life is like a box of chocolates....

EDIT: Silly example but.....drove up to an OR gas station and proceeded to fill my tank...two young ladies began to berate me about stealing their jobs (it's illegal to pump your own gas in OR)....all done in fun...(they saw my license plate)....bows and arrows were slung at each other....good natured fun....

train travel is fun...it's a great way to see the countryside. there's always the club car to meet and chat to other travellers, play cards or scrabble...or just sit back and enjoy the scenery.

sure, sometimes nights can be little lonely, but when i'm travelling i'm not interested in late nights. usually i have to be up bright and early for the next day. i've met interesting people in the hotel bar over a drink after dinner....never felt "alone"...am usually too tired!...lol

I'll respond to this as well:

I find traveling alone is hard because at night you are alone in a hotel and your sweetheart isn't with you and my brother use to do solo traveling and isn't better to have someone with you.

If you are home alone and single, or your SO isn't over on certain nights, what's the difference? If you have someone in your life who wants to come with you, then you don't have to travel alone, so this doesn't apply.

I don't think I could do solo traveling. I don't even like traveling to visit my family by airplane alone.

Could be you're just not used to it. Everyone can travel alone and enjoy it if they do it long enough...

Any suggestions to help me to want to travel solo?

Start at home. Do things you want to do without having someone with you. It's just a matter of getting used to it.

Does anyone know of any sites on the web that can match me up that I can travel with someone? Like a single tour company? Maybe that is the way to start.

As long as you aren't tied to the person for the whole trip should you not get along with them, that's a great idea (separate arrangements, rooms, rentals, etc). There are a lot of people who'd rather travel alone than spend a whole trip with someone they don't click with. That'd be my first worry - I've spent a whole trip with people I know well and wanted to kill them, so strangers are a crap shoot.

plp1: I would not encourage you to meet someone online and then try to travel with them. Find a friend through activities such as done through a singles travel organization, or through a local activity group. If you have an interest in something, there may be a group in your area, like for outdoor activities, bird watching, volunteer work, dem or republican groups, church. I was suggesting you meet someone in RL and then see if they would also like to travel. I also suggest, if you are serious about this traveling alone thing, you start making 2 or 3 day trips on your own. Get the feel of it and see if it is really something you'd want to do. But, better yet, if you really don't feel comfortable about it, find a friend.

Also, on your profile, list travel as one of your interests. And state it in your profile. By far, most of the men who contact me, those who have read my profile, do so becaue they are also interested in travel. When you list travel on your interests, you can click on it and search through profiles of women who also like to travel. As well, I am from Seattle/Portland and can give you some ideas of places to go for 2-3 day trips. Portland for one. Also the Oregon Coast. Seattle, of course and Vancouver and Victoria. Go to Ashland, Oregon next spring for the Shakespearean festival, they have other plays, not just Shakespeare. You can Google it. Do some online reseach about places in the Pacific NW....there are a lot of places you could go for short trips. I used to just put my dog in the car and go. Of course it was difficult to find motels where she was allowed, being a lab, but I found them.

I took the travel trailer up to Mackinaw for the weekend and took my parot along for company. He sqwauked the whole way, complaining about everything from how fast I was driving to how weak I made his margareta. I promised myself to never bring that little feathered S.O.B. with me ever again. He now resides in his lovely cage in the living room where he can piss and moan about how I never take him anywhere any more and how weak I still make his margaretas. He's just horrible when he's drinking. From now on it's me, myself, and I who vacation together.

I spent one month and one day in my travel trailer this summer travelling through 15 states. The only thing I missed about home was my shower. Skinny dipping in those cold secluded rivers and streams, or taking a wash cloth bath was getting mighty annoying after a while.

Skwiggie, how did you like traveling alone? Did you meet any people?

Taking cloth bathes suck. I had surgery a few months ago and I had to take cloth baths.
