How did you escape from the monster in your dreams ?

I can only remember 2 monsters ever chasing me in dreams when I was younger.

1 of them I didn't get a look at, it was very dark and I was overcome with fear. I was running from something, but did not know what, I did not have time to look back. I focused on what was in front of me, a hall way, which lead to a "T" and on the left or right there was a door outside. I ran to the left which seemed to be the shortest path, and ran outside in the summer time, but slide as if I had my no-grip boots on in the winter.

That scared me even more as I couldn't seem to get moving on the ice, but it looked like dry concrete in the summer. I had to get away, so I finally got some momentum and slid off, then woke up. Never had that dream ever again.

Second dream was a blob-like monster chasing me, and I just lead it in circles continuously. I run inside, go to the window, let it catch up, jump out the window and wait for it to come out, then run back inside and do it again until I woke up.

You wrote that you read that demons were the outlet for stress but I am sure that there is not anyone wants to run away from monsters when stressed. It is a very scared
experience to run away from a monster

Interesting Question,

As a lad, I had many nightmares, the worst of which emanated from a song that was popular at that time. The song was called "The Purple People Eater." Back then, they didn't have MTV, so the actual monster of the song was never graphically displayed, except through my mind, on that evening.

He floated through the air, on our front yard, but the yard was transformed intoa sphere of evil and darkness. His features were murky, as I was afraid of drawing his attention by staring at him, for fear that he would acknowledge me and act accordingly. I only took sideways glances, like a puppy who is afraid of being beaten by his master.

But I remember a wrinkled mass of flesh, no eyes in the sockets but yet I knew that he could see, gaping mouth, no teeth, again, emptiness as with the eye sockets. His arms and hands were as smoke, able to cause harm not to the body, but to the soul, should those fingers make contact with human flesh. He never attacked directly, but took his time, weaving his way sideways, around, as if contemplating what evil he would perpetrate on our family. I felt that he was there, not with purpose, but simply because he had to be "somewhere" and our Hill Country forest home was there by happenstance.

I was trying to scream as loud as I could, but nothing would come out of my mouth. In the back of my mind, I knew that I had to move, but my body would not respond. My soul was struggling mightily to revive my human existence.

In my attempts to shout, I woke up suddenly only to realize that it was all a bad dream. I "escaped" by struggling to shout out a warning, and I found myself in a sitting position when I awoke.

The dream affected me all through my school day, and vividly so, as I struggled all day to "envision" his every feature, because I felt at the time that he was real.

Nowadays, my dreams have a more realistic tone to them, but do not possess the raw fear and shock as in my younger days. Some have a tendency to linger throughout the day. Recently, I dreamed that my Dingo mix Sally had been run over by a car. This is unlikely as she never goes out of the yard unsupervised. But in my dream there was no fence. I woke up in distress, as in my dream she had not died immediately but rather, was squirming and contorting before me, in pain. My day was haunted by those images, eventhough I had ensured, right after the nightmare, that she was safe.

[For levity only] And then, of course, I get the occasional dream about my ex-wife. That there is a nightmare in and of itself.

Krebby,

I had a dream long ago that monsters (similar in form to the Predator movie) from outerspace were enslaving human beings. In this dream I escaped out of the second floor of my parents house through the window and started running through a field. I was chased by these male aliens in much the same way hunters would chase prey. I was finally caught by the commanding officer, so to speak, and thought that I would be bound and become a slave.

What happened was that the creature kissed me, a deep passionate kiss of love, and I realized that what these "aliens" represented were all the uncomfortable feelings suppressed into my unconscious (yes, very Freudian). I fell in love in that moment in my dream and came to the conclusion that I need to love all the uncomfortable parts of myself. That it is only through accepting my faults and being kind with myself will I ever stop running in fear. Sometimes what we fear the most is our greatest love.

Mirabelle,

Well, DANG! Ain't no way I'm a gonna love the Purple People Eater! That there is what they call on POF, a "deal breaker."

Maybe it's a Mars versus Venus thang. When my daughter and I were still in Chicago, they transformed Block 37 (an empty block) into a Halloween Haunted Fair. Say what you will about Mayor Richie Daley, but that man has a heart.

Well, she was all of 2 1/2 years at that time, able to "talk" but still developing in her reasoning power. It was there that we met the dreaded "Honk Monster." The "Honk Monster" was dressed in a clown suit, but his "thing" was holding a big blow horn and chasing the poor children of Chicago around blowing his horn and hissing, "Boo!"

Claudia was in a stroller, when, by happenstance, we became the target of the Honk Monster's attention. Claudia yelled, "Daddy, Run!" I commenced to going along with the event, pushing that ol stroller as fast as it would go without tipping over, what with the Honk Monster blowing his horn and doing his thing. "Faster, Daddy, he's gaining on us, I'm scared!" We finally made it to Marshall Field's, the Honk Monster having abandoned his chase. "Daddy, we made it, we outran the Honk Monster."

All through that afternoon, I fielded questions, "Daddy, where do you reckon the Honk Monster Lives?" I made up a story about him living in the storm drains. "Why do you spose the Honk Monster is so mean? "Where does the Honk Monster go after Halloween? etc. etc. The discussion continued until she was going on 5, and had moved away from Chicago (he lived in drains, and they have those in TX as well).

The amazing thing is, the next day, as I'm feeding her breakfast, she remarks, "Daddy, Can we go back to Halloween Block to see if the ol Honk Monster is still there?"

We went back a total of 4 times, each time the Honk Monster obliging us by doing his thing.

It's got to be a Venus versus Mars thang!

mirabelle13, can you tell me what planet those creatures came from so that I may dream about them.
If you read my post#20, you may understand why.
I am starting to think dream monsters are too good for me.

Vancer,

I have no idea where they came from or even what they called themselves. I do know that I loved this being with my whole heart. His image and presence seemed to surround my psyche all day. And I felt sad at the gradual fading of the dream from my consciousness.

I can still draw his image if I think of him. But, I truly believe that the monsters that we engage in dreams are those bits of ourselves that we do not wish to acknowledge. (I do think Freud had some things correct with his exploration of the unconscious.)

Embrace what you fear most. . .

Or, you could always offer them a bit of cheese. . .

Freudian thought converges, to a level, with Shamanist thought (at least as related to me by elders). Shamans travel "inward" to explore the world of the sub-conscious (Freud's world, as examined through hypnosis), but to the shaman, the sub-conscious is merely a window on another realm of existence.

Shamans "learn" how to traverse through the inner world to explore "dwellers" -- those who have chosen to remain in that inner world, as opposed to those who exist in a physical world (and who knows what this truly is?). Some go back and forth from inner world to physical existence; some are permanent dwellers in the inner world and they learn to gain power in that realm, for they have existed therein for many ages. There are truly powerful and evil forces there; and there are powers in opposition to that evil. Both forces are powerful, and to know them is to understand power, influence, and understanding in a deep metaphysical sense.

The soul is the "connection," not the mind. The mind "translates" what the soul endeavors to say. So, in a way, it makes some sense that the human mind once in a while remembers, or "connects" to the inner world (for the soul is part and parcel of the universal life source) This is captured in dreams, both nightmares and more sweet dreams.

The shaman learns not to wait for dreams, but rather, to intentionally go into the inner world with eyes (perception) open. The goal of the shaman is not to conquer the forces, for they are too powerful; but rather to understand, and through that understanding, to strive for balance between good and evil, a balance between power, which disrupts, and stasis, which devolves to nothing.

I get the purple people eater while Mirabelle gets the Antonio Banderas's in space suits. That would make sense to a shaman. Alas, Krebby is no shaman, so he pouts.

Yes, it is true that Freud seems to parallel shamanistic thought.

However, Carl Jung (once Freud's disciple, then "excommunicated by him) believed in archtypes that existed in the of the universal psyche (probably rooted in Aristolian thought). These universals would be mirrored by an individuals personality,

I would venture to say that his take on dreams would be much more similar than Freuds. However, I am not a psychoanalyst or from this tradition, so there may be others that have a greater grasp on the philosophical meanderings of these two psychologists.

Freudian thought converges

I always preferred Jung over Freud. Especially within regards to the Archetypes within the subconscious. Maybe those are the dwellers? Hmmm...

How did you escape from the monster in your dreams ?

I had this dream once, that proved to be quite pivotal, in how I dreamt from there on out.

I was being chased by this man with a huge butcher knife. (Scary music plays) Anyway, he CAUGHT me, and STABBED me to DEATH. In my dream, I died, and I felt my dis-corporal self (ghost) rise out of my body...and I haunted him. I drove him insane. No one else could see or hear me, but he could, and I drove him to near suicide, only whenever he tried to do it I would stop him. Finally, when he was a sobbing mess, I told him I would leave him alone if he swore to never harm another human being again. In my dream, he didn't.

I woke up thinking "wow, you really can die in your dream and still live". Also, it crossed my mind that I have a very vindictive b1tch living inside me.

Interesting thing, is that after that, whenever a dream would start to turn scary, in my dream I would realize that I was dreaming and I would change it. I very rarely have nightmares anymore...

Edit post: Darn it Mirabelle, you beat me to Jung...smooches.

I just don't want to reach into the cereal box for the "surprise" and have some weird spider of something bite or sting me! I always am careful with pacjaged foods that way...some of that "overseas" stuff...you never know.
Enjoy your corn flakes tomorrow....

actually had a strange bordering on scarey dream last night ... the thing is just as I'm getting a handle on the situation and go on the offensive, I wake up.
bit frustrating that I don't actually get to kick the crap out of that sasquatchy shadow guy. ... or the guy trying to shoot me.

was thinking the dreams might have something to do with watching Bruce Campbell's "The Man With The Screaming Brain"

We all do, although I would change that force to a genderless beast of one type or another -- sans the Antonio Banderas looks, or even the Angelina Jolie looks, in space suits, who chase ya around and once they catch ya, turn out to be in "luv". [start the Barry White music]

If you don't "get" the latter portion of this post, scroll up a post or two ...

(1970s porno music playing in background) My luck would be that just when I was making out with the green alien (having surrendered any reservations about inter-species relations), he would turn into my gay neighbor (who is one of my best friends), and we would both run away screaming.

It would be the only nightmare I have had all year...

The monster in my dream was a huge hand wearing a white glove. It always jumped out at me from a dark tunnel and chased me down the street. It wanted to......uhh, I can't say what it wanted to do to me because it's too dirty.

I used to have recurring dreams years ago. The 2 common ones were falling through blackness - and waiting to hit the bottom. And running, zig-zagging, but no matter where I ran or hid the shadowmen would always appear infront of me. I'd then usually wake up at that point; there were never any words spoken in the dreams. The shadowmen were black shadows with no faces; they weren't real people with features. I dreamt about them frequently when I was in my 20s.

How did I escape them? Back in those days I used to simply wake up. Always at the point where they approached me.

Some good posts on here. My dreams were in my early 20s - I'm now 37. When I was a student. I used to discuss them with college friends - and wrote poetry about 'in real life as in dreams things aren't always what they seem'. I also did a collective poetry book whilst doing my degree where the theme was 'Light & Shadows'. There was a poem about shadows in it, which inspired the whole collective book. My friends Ross and Donna contributed to the book while at uni.

Dreams are dreams at the end of the day. I stopped having those dreams a few years ago. The book of poetry was left behind in my last shared house.
