Posted: 4/11/2007 11:16:08 PM | Actually, if you want to get technical, Russia is in both the continent of Europe and Asia (Eurasia); and further, most of the population is in the European portion of the country. Their culture has a Byzantian/Byzantine/Byzantium influence more than anything else.
Their language 'Russian' is a slavic based dialect that is indo-european in origin.

Yeah there's some pretty crazy cosmetic stuff going on in China. Like 'height extension' which is breaking the legs and placing rods in to extend their height.
On a related note in terms of the article concerning Rosie O'donell's "Ching Chong" comment, the problem we have is that this type of humor is a bit of a commodity. It's been a part of our comedic repetoire for years. It's similar to when the 'old' movies wanted comedy affect, they would hire Montan Moreland (Black American actor) to play a butler or side-kick, who would freak every time he thought he saw a ghost. This type of racial stereotype was part of our cinematic repetoire for many years as well. It eventually was removed (although not easily) because of it's degrading nature. The Asian jokes that we see in the movies, and used by stand-up comics and disc-jockeys, will not by any stretch of the imagination just go away. It would be something like getting rid of the 'double entendre', something we rely on constantly for comedy effect, if French Americans decided that it was degrading.
What is being promoted however, is the notion that it's a way to laugh at 'ourselves' and 'stereotypes'. So we have comedians like Lisa Lampley who will supposedly attack anyone, and then at the end of the show, butter-up those in the audience she roasted. The people in the front row know they will get it, and when she makes a joke about their race, they move the camera over to the targets who are laughing 'hysterically'. The idea being of course that if they laugh, we should laugh. Kind of like a laugh track or cue cards.
My question to those who sort of go on these long descriptions about the physical/cultural attributes about the Asian woman, to the point of considering marrying one, are they willing to deal with, maybe even actively fight the racism that 'does' affect Asian individuals? The notion of laughing at ourselves in relation to racial stereotype is ridiculous.
The popular notion that if a White breeds with an Asian they will produce 'beautiful children', and thus will have a better life is nothing more than that, a notion. When I grew up I had a friend who was half Japanese half white. In spite of a slightly 'brownish' hair color, he looked very Asian. And he was mocked like there was no tomorrow. He received the full brunt of ridicule as the 'other' Asian kids. | |

When I grew up I had a friend who was half Japanese half white. In spite of a slightly 'brownish' hair color, he looked very Asian. And he was mocked like there was no tomorrow. He received the full brunt of ridicule as the 'other' Asian kids.

Posted: 4/12/2007 2:12:35 PM | Characters in popular shows like InuYahsa or YugiOh or Naruto, to name a few, all have round, large eyes that are often blue or green, and their hair is blond, brown or red. Japan, even as it struggles to make itself a global political player, by the look of its manga and anime, seems strangely beholden to the visage of their World War II conquerors.
Gotta love people looking for self-hate or racism in places where it doesn't exist.
The "round-eyed" anime is such because nearly all modern anime is based on Astro Boy. In addition to that, since Japanese culture considers the eyes a mirror of a person's inner being (window to the soul, an' all that), the wider and more doe-like a character's eyes, the more innocent they are. Notice that most "normal" anime characters have eyes somewhere in-between round and slitlike, most young/innocent characters have huge eyes, and most evil characters have very narrow eyes.
The differing hair colors are there simply to identify the characters. Since all anime characters have similar facial characteristics, they'd blend together if everyone was blonde or brunette. The crazy hair colors and styles help the viewer tell the characters apart.
By the way, you know why they don't let baseball players use aluminum bats? 'cause the audience isn't comfortable seein' that big black bat hittin' that little white ball.

Unfortunately, my family is prone to the occasional off-color remark about other races. I wasn't particular sure they'd be accepting of my ex, so I pretty much pulled my father aside and said "my bride-to-be, as you are aware, in from China. I know how your family is - and I want it to be known that there will be no "behind the back" comments about the Chink I married. Capische?"
Whether it worked or not, I dunno - but in marrying an Asian woman I became a lot more sensitive to life from "her" point of view. It was... enlightening, to say the least. | |

Not quite to the same detail as you gave, but relatively similar. I always figured that the reason why Speed Racer and Trixie had big eyes, was because the Japanese don't stereotype themselves like we would. For instance, there was an American cartoon about a Japanese mouse who's eyes were slits. Well, the Japanese are not going to say "you know we have these strange eyes that differ from everyone elses. Let's give Speed Racer and Astro Boy little slits for eyes so that when we show these cartoons and anime to Americans [who we are making them for], they will know the characters are Japanese".
In the slightest possible defense of the article, but then again, maybe not whatsoever, there was/is a Japanese comic where the Japanese characters have round eyes, but the Koreans have more of the slit. This has caused some anger with non Japanese Asians. | |

It's not my "take" on the topic, it's the explanation given by anime artists themselves. It has nothing to do with stereotype - it has to do with a stylistic representation of something important to their culture.
Well, the Japanese are not going to say "you know we have these strange eyes that differ from everyone elses. Let's give Speed Racer and Astro Boy little slits for eyes so that when we show these cartoons and anime to Americans [who we are making them for], they will know the characters are Japanese".
The Japanese don't make their cartoons for us, and they never did. Anime is a huge industry in Japan - the fact that they can export it to us and make even more money is just bonus.
Don't forget that until shows like Pokemon became mainstream, most anime that wasn't targeted at a worldwide release was nearly impossible to get hold of over here - and was usually badly translated if at all, because it was done by fans who'd learned a bit of the language. It's only been over the last ten to twenty years that an obsession with anime's exploded here in the US - and American shows are now mimicking the tenets of the style. So we've come full circle.
I work for a Japanese company with animators and artists, and they're *all* otaku. Chances are, if you want to know it, I can find it out.

Oh, the article's true to an extent. I know that for a fact, because my ex used to point out Asian media stars that had gotten their eyes done derisively. But the author's so driven to prove his point he's making stuff up instead of sticking to the facts (of which there are plenty). | |

The Asian people are (in American culture) an enormously successful people. They now represent (it took them 3 or 4 generations to become successful) the wealthiest, most intelligent & healthiest people in the country. They have fit in to our society by using traditional values and hard work (it doesn't hurt that Asians are well spoken and regard membership in our intellectual culture to be the highest achievement.) These elements of social status are crazy important to each of us, whether you admit it or not.
Hispanic woman happen to be among the least educated, the poorest (and consequently the least healthy.) Their social status is very low...
Would you want to be serious with a poor, dumb guy who can't speak intelligently, uses anger and violence to express himself and has no future whatsoever? | |

Asian women get the "white" look to attract ASIAN guys.
When they want to attract WHITE guys, they don't have to very much at all except be themselves:
1) no money on hair styles: straight and long
2) no plastic surgery
3) etc.
Is Michael Jackson self hating? I don't know.
Anyway, MOST people don't plastic surgery. Just like "self hating" blacks are not the majority. Some people like other identifies and looks

Lots of the girls she is negatively compared too look "more caucasian". Still she does happen to have double eyelids but to non-asians, that feature being common is not particularly attractive. The single eyelid, is only a downer when your chasing asian guys who see too many single ones around.
It is CHINESE hollywood, that wants to get women with more "caucasian" features.
So your whole article is an excercise in asian self deceit.
White guys who like asian girls DONT want them to look white.
Heck, we got enough white girls here to date the real thing if we want.
We'd rather have the straight hair, the brains, the attitude (although some white guys actual think the servant girl exists; i don't they get very far on the dating scene), ... | |

I'm sorry but I take exception to Filippinas being just a notch on my belt. After many years of not finding the love of my life, I finally find my soulmate who is Filippina. She has been the only woman on this earth in the almost 49 yrs I've been alive to actually make my heart skip a few beats. And guess what, she feels exactly the same about me. So please, let's not degrade Filippina women. They can be a gift from God himself. Believe it or not, I never expected to fall in love with a woman from the other side of the globe. If anyone had told me that it would happen to me I would have laughed in their face and referred them to the nearest psycotherapest. But I'm living proof that it can happen.

I don't think anyone is degrading Filipina women. What she said is true. Even though Filipinos(as) are Polynesian, in general those that specifically have an Asian fetish tend to include Filipinas. However, Samoans, Tongans, Fijians, Hawaiians, etc. are generally not included although they are Polynesian as well. | |
