Bringing three friends is not a requirement. It's simply a statement informing those planning on attending. All are welcome. I attended my first "outing" solo back in Feb. I attend monthly solo. Everyone is so incredibly nice and I continue to gain new friends every time. Come with no expectations and an open mind. Talk to both men and women. I followed that advise and am happy I did.
