You think about something other than what is bothering you. Notice people who handle their children well. Those who are able to get a child to stop crying usually do so by finding something to attract the child's attention. Adults do it for themselves. If you are going through something really difficult, mourning for example, and feel sad and weepy, but you can't cry because you are at work or out in public, what do you do? You think about something else.

I did not distract her, I would say it is ok to cry until the tears are gone. I let her know with my words and my attention that she was safe and loved.
They were her feelings and those feelings were overwhelming her.
Sometimes that is all she needed was the permission to cry and the knowledge that she was loved.
We do need to allow ourselves to cry, to mourn, to feel our sadness and pain, to express it. Usually, because of cultural imperatives, that is done in private.

I would ask her who said she should stop crying.

Then I would ask her if she believes they were right

If she had decided herself to stop crying I would ask her why

If she said that she didnt like crying I would ask why

Basically then, I wouldnt 'give' her anything. Rather I would allow her to give her own answers and in that way win her own clarity.

Perhaps a better answer is - you don't stop them from crying. They're crying for a reason - let them do what they need to do.

My answer to this girl question "Mommy how do you stop crying ? Honey, the minute you want to stop crying ,then you 're not crying any more.

If she ask me Why a person cry ? My answer is because of pain in their body or hurt feelings..

Getting really scared would stop me from crying.

Realistically speaking, when someone is crying, they won't be able to stop immediately even after someone gives them a hug or try to make them laugh. However, a huge scare would probably stop someone from crying quite immediately, unless s/he is too young to be scared.
