How clean is your house?
Posted: 6/20/2009 9:37:29 AM
Some people are just born to live as 'pigs'.
My neighbour for example has an overcrowed house.....her lounge is a pile of clothes in which she lies back in watching television, whilst her clothes covered sofa looms in the background.
She walks into my home then tells me 'she really should clean her house'...but can't be bothered.
It takes me two hours to clean my home from top to bottom...I do this on a Saturday as I work during the week.
I would be looking into a possible 'drug' scenerio.....this is the usual lifestyle a druggie would take.
My neighbour doesn't have a car to run .....yet she is ALWAYS broke.....You do the math.
How I would love to sit and smoke and talk on my mobile phone.....all day.....No thank you!
My sympathy is with the new born.

Yes, my house is both tidy and clean. When my boys are over for the week it becomes somewhat less tidy which drives me mad! I recently purchased a wireless router which has allowed me to banish the eldest one to his room when he wants to use his laptop. No more of his crap on my dining table. Bliss. Of course he had a problem with it - I am banished he said! No hon I replied – now you will live longer because I will no longer see the mess you make and be tempted to throttle you. See, mothers know best.

they do say that if you are obssessive about cleanliness , then you are worried that people might think you yourself have some dirtiness you care to hide

a too tidy OCD house is just as scarey from a psychological point of view as a complete dump

it's an anal retentive thing . Poor sods , the real them is quivering inside in case some body thinks they're less than perfect .

Oh dear, the judgements! It seems that I have a dirtiness to hide (heh, heh…..grubby smile…….oh, not that sort of dirty???), I am anal retentive, and quivering inside in case someone thinks I am less than perfect.

Or perhaps…..I just like my home to be clean and tidy????

ok i9 am a single guy that lives with his kids part time....and although my house can be "messy" it is never "unhealthy" and i think that is the major difference....yesi will have toys and other item about the place at times....i dont leave food or anything like that around....and my kids seem to enjoy it a bit better as their mother is a compulsive neat freak...everything must be in its place at all times......and nothing can be untidy at all. but thats just her

Yeah I can be judgemental and opinionated..but that is just their opinions lol. I think probably that people (not you per ce) who are pedantic about order etc often have a issue with control (and fear of being controlled and lack of control), which spills out into other people's lives around them. By controlling a house to the point (as with my father) where all hell is let loose because one put the key on the wrong key hook, or the bowls are not stacked in exact order of colour and size possibly reveals an almost paralysing fear of change, the unknown etc. and a deep seated fear of their own ability to survive the chaos called life. Living with someone who dictates how everything has to be within the SHARED environment is the surest way to destroy genuine relationships where everyone can just be themselves. I have watched amazing women and men destroy perfectly good relationships and their children by being more concerned with things than themselves and others. I grew up with a serious OCD parent....it was hell....so maybe I do over react somewhat...however I have just watched a naturally tidy woman go quite obsessive about her house in the last two years (and yes she works etc so not a housewife) and have been quietly worried. I was right to worry, she was hiding a lot of unhappy thoughts, things etc. Lets hope her house ceases to become the ineffective placebo and the real work can begin...again.

As Naamah and no doubt others have said, it is their business how they live and you're there to see them not their house - if you can't cope with it grab a motel and tell them you don't want to make extra work for them with the new baby or something similar - then you'll need to shout them out to dinner a lot since you probably won't want to eat there....

I'm fairly neat myself (ok I've been called anal, but I've moderated somewhat recently), I simply find it easier to clean a little often than have a huge mess to clean less frequently. And I have decluttered my life including my house, so that makes it easy to stay clean and tidy.

But I wanted to relay a recent experience - a friend of mine was babysitting for her friends recently, and she invited me over for a coffee to keep her company. When I arrived she had already been tidying for 2 hours (she couldn't stand it), and the house was still filthy. The carpet was patchy with food stains, there were biscuits and pieces of food spread throughout the house, the sink was covered in dishes (they had a dishwasher!) which were covered in food (that the cat hadn't found yet - when they got home and let it in, it freely walked over the sink in front of them, eating what scraps it could find). Now, that is their choice, but they had a small toddler and a pre-schooler. I hate to imagine the things that ended up in the toddlers mouth. And what sort of insects, bacteria, fungus etc were living in the microclimate that covered the floor?

These people were educated, affluent, stable - I can't understand why anyone would live like this by choice? They can afford to own 4 horses but apparently can't afford a cleaner?

By the way, I skipped the coffee....

I have my kids for at least one week out of the school holidays, and as the house fills up with the ever increasing amounts of junk and toys that they seem to find from "everywhere" (I even had a lounge full of flowers today because my 5 yr old was saving the pollon for the bees)

Thing is its great, i dont care in the slightest, I will clean it up when they have gone home and they will trash the place again when i get to have them next time.....

Clean isnt the same as untidy

my house is always reasonably clean and tidy but never spotless.
i prefer to call it "lived in."
i do regularly clean the kitchen, bathroom and toilet.....the rest of the house gets a once a week going over with a vacuum cleaner and a quick dust.
my daughter-in-law has the right idea. she has a communal play room where the children are responsible for tidying up their own mess. at times that room looks as if a cyclone has hit but at least the chaos is not through out the house.

my pet peeve is dirty dishes. if you can't be bothered to wash dishes then your're just a lazy soab.....not to mention all the germs that are breeding in the sink and surrounds. yuk!
maybe you can send them a years supply of paper plates and throw away cutlery as a new baby present.
not an ideal enviroment to bring up healthy children.....another generation of slobs on the way to adulthood!

^^^ When we had lunch my brother-in-law opened a new dinner set he had stashed in the cupboard, it was the last of ten dinner sets he had used, the rest were scattered around the kitchen(none washed).... so yeah, paper plates might be handed out next time we visit.

^^^ Loved that TV series!

I'm currently trying to sedate myself with Panadol, my kids were suppose to put the garbage out yesterday(which they did) but they never close the lids of the wheelie bins!!!! So now I have a lane way littered with rubbish, and a recycle bin full of rain water.... their ignorance in obeying a simple rule seems perpetual sometimes.

Im impressed that you have managed to get them to take them out, your coersive skills must be masterful, whats your secret, PS give up on the details, all kids are budding upper management these days, they dont do detail...lol

Yeah, too much detail and they(kids) lose the plot.... although food seems to be a good bribe, especially when used as a punishment! I stop and try to imagine how was I at their age, it's bloody hard to do that actually...the memory of my youth is getting quite blurry these days.

I once saw a quote that had the general meaning of " Show me someone with a spotless house and I shall see someone with no life".
My house is untidy, most of the time, dirty occasionally and clean for about an hour everytime it is undertaken to make it so! I have children that have no ability to pick things up after themselves, one of which is a small tornado that sweeps through my home several times a day! We are all healthy, we are all hygienic, we are just not that interested in spending our time cleaning things that would only remain that way through constant vigilance. I like MY home comfortable, and if anyone that visits MY home feels they cannot return because I am too untidy for them, then, so be it.
I have found that most stories of "dirty, unhealthy" houses, usually have a much deeper condition, that the state of the house, is merely a symptom of........

How clean is your house?

I use to clean my house weekly, doing the carpets, the bathrooms, the kitech, mopping, cleaning the mirrors, dusting, etc... I never had a problem letting someone in uninvited because of a mesy house. I was almost a neat freak, but not too anal about it. LOL

Then one night while I was shampooing the carpets and cleaning other things around the house, I got a call that my mother had fallen and was being rushed to the hospital where she later passed away. Since that day, I don't clean my house like I use too. I clean ofcourse, but not with the detail that I did before, and there are times when I will let the kitchen get in bad shape before cleaning it. I do still try to keep clean the rooms the people will see if/when someone comes over, but for the mst part, my house is no where near as clean as I use to keep it, and even my brother and neice(she's a clean freak who cleans up when she's bored or can't sleep) have commented on it a couple of times. And for the most part, they noticed when the cleaning, or lack of, started.

Once I started to realize this I began (still am) to take steps to get things back on schedule. I think, somewhere in he back of my mind, when I do get into cleaning really heavily, it, for some strange reason, reminds me alittle of that night. I don't know, can't say for sure.

But, I use to be more like Felix from The Odd Couple(Just not as Anal, LOL), and was slowly turning into an Oscar after that night, though not as bad. I am slowly getting back to how I use to be.

Also, I have talked to people who have a "messy" or cluttered house and in some cases, it's not because they are lazy, but more so because of time issues, or something happened in the past or whatever. Somepeople are plain lazy though, when it comes to house cleaning.

Also, I use to work days and now I work nights, which is when I use to do most of my cleaning, and I know that is one reason for the changes .

I like my house to be clean and tidy when ever people come over. I think it is only respectful to others for your house to be clean when they visit. I also like my home to be clean and tidy for my own sake, as it gives me a sense of being able to relax. And it feels good.

..extremely dusty.... (he says smugly).... just like everyones over on the east coast....

dust storms are a great leveler for comparitive house cleanliness....

mind you, I live on a dirt road anyway.. so dust is inherent here.... ubiquitous even... sigh..

a bit of exotic interstate dust can only add some extra texture, I guess.....

my 5 yr old was saving the pollon for the bees)

Awww bless!!!! Please don't stop this cos the less pollen out there the less bees, the less I panic one will sting and kill my eldest. She wagged school once, went to the park, sat on a bee, ended up in Hospital...again.

Since I decided to let the car wrench my bicep from the shoulder AND elbow I have found my almost non existent wish to clean is now perfected cos I can't do BLOODY anything and I hate dirty mess. Having kids like Misteique has made spreading jam with toothbrushes and using towels as hiders of spilt breakfast...and how in the hell did they manage to get under the wardrobe to eat it and more importantly WHY??? But shock horror, cos Mummy has been seen crying recently even my 10 year old is beginning to pull his weight...bless him, he cleaned the bathroom yesterday, even mopping the floor and then came in complaining cos he had stinging hand and feet.....shower power versus skin....aww bless, must teach him to wear gloves and shoes when developing cancer through bleach.

Mentioned friend who was too OCD.....her partner has changed and so has her house....even worse, new partner is more OCD than her....arghhh I deeply suspect there will be a bleach basin out the front to step through before entering soon...scarey.

Latino person up above ... in this country extreme view points are not encouraged, you are young young man and you think a gleaming white smile [what toothpaste do you use ?] will get you by .. well it will . But as to extremity in cleanliness , my house would probably collapse if it were scoured and scrubbed . It is intermittently clean-ish and then sort of with Big cushions thrown over the worse bits . This is called' cosmetic cleanliness '. So long as****oaches don't crawl out from under the frig , for these stages it passes as clean . It's all to do with the full moon ... peoples emotions go funny near the full moon , ask any hospital . Near the full moon is good for some things [ahem] but bad for housecleaning .
