We were raising Horses and Longhorn Cattle on the banks of the San Antonio River before there was a America...When the Alamo was newly built

We drove horses, cattle, and amunition to Gen. Galviz in New Oreleans In support of the French (Allies of the Patriots) battling the English. Many modren day descendant of those men, are considered Sons of the American Revolution.

We supplied horses and cattle and Sons to the fight for Texas Indepencence...Men like Lasoya, Seguin, Badillo, DeZavala, Flores are heros in Texas. Of the Only Native born Texans to die in defence of the Alamo...were names like Juan Abamillo, Juan A. Badillo, Carlos Espalier, Gregorio Esparza, Antonio Fuentes, José María Guerrero, Damacio Jimenes (Ximenes), Toribio Losoya, and Andrés Nava. And many of our Mothers, Sister and Wives are Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

There were Mexicans/Tejanos picking cotton in Mississippi 40 years after the Civil War, after Freed Former slaves left the fields and moved North. We are in the Fields today.

We also shed our blood in WWI, WWII, Korea,VietNam and all Conficts therseafter.
We continue to Serve Proudly.

WTF does that have anything to do with the topic????? Seriously!

Why did we come, Why did we stay ...For the same reason Your ForeFathers did.

The difference is the way my Fore Fathers came here was not illegal.

Most of us are not against immigration. What we are against is the rampant flood of unchecked illegal immigration that is destroying the social and economic fabric of tis country.

We now return you to the Original Topic...............

Borders seem more and more redundant to me as the world becomes more integrated. I had no trouble moving from Europe to the US legally because I had a degree. But if I needed to, I'd not hesitate to cross borders illegally. There were no borders in the Americas until the Europeans decided to carve it up. - and I don'trecall the Pilgrim Fathers asking permission to live permanently in the US. We just have a 'better' perspective of their illegal activity.

One irony with Mexico is that the US used politics and war to 'acquire' a few states, including California from Mexico. Ever since, the US has been struggling to keep Mexicans out! There are shady practises on both sides, so self-righteous claims of illegality are somewhat laughable. The whole issue is a sham of manipulation. Employers in America would have to pay higher wages if they didn't have the 'illegal immigrant' card to play in wage negotiations. Then there is the greed of American companies. AMERICAN oranges here in Mexico cost around 30 CENTS per pound. They must be at least 5 times that in the US and no better eating. If people in the US weren't skimming such high profits, there'd be enough to pay the wages to attract American workers.

I don'tunderstand the accusations related to welfare. The US is one of the LEAST welfare tolerant countries in the world. Even I, as a US citizen can get free medical care in Mexico, just by filling in the appropriate forms and getting an OK from my doctor here. As it is, my cost for a 'private' visit to a doctor here is the same as my deductible was for a similar visit in the US - and I don't have to pay the high insurance premiums every month. Having a baby in the US is good insurance since anyone born in the US is entitled to US citizenship. I don't hear grumblings about people coming in on aeroplanes with similar intentions. If the US don't like it, they could change the law.

Back when the US was first developing, another nation was being formed on the other side of the world. Based on the 'illegal' acts of the poor and needy in Britain. Their crime too was just doing enough to survive from day to day. Taking discarded bread from a garbage can was illegal and people caught indulging in such 'criminal behavior' were transported across the world to Australia. It's easy to be self-righteous and draconian when your belly is full and you have a roof over your head, but I suspect that such hardened hearts will serve badly in the end. One of the most positive experience in Mexico is the warmth and friendliness people have for each other, even strangers, in big cities or remote villages. The perception of Mexico as a backward third world country works well for them as they quietly move their economy forward with a vastly different picture than that portrayed in the American mind.

As for corruption, you think drugs, arms and people would move so freely across the border if the US was paying the attention that it should? Google drug importation US corruption for information you don't ead in the media. It's interesting to note that most of the top reports don't come from media sources. Now, all of those killings in Mexico. The numbers seem to be disputed here, but even if the 6,000 'murders' reported in the US media is correct and not inflated, the 15,000 murders reported in the US last year don't get quite the same attention or they may add a little perspective to the Mexican numbers.

Americans are not crossing the border into Mexico for a better life with better wages
No, Byrd, but they are crossing the border in droves for a much lower cost of living to save on their pensions. There's a building boom going on right now in Mexico, largely fuelled by American dollars, but also by the new wealth being enjoyed by Mexicans too.

But the corruption in Mexico is in plain sight as there are several serial killers operatating near the border killing women.

What's your evidence that this is due to "corruption", and not due to the lack of resources law enforcement has there vs here in the US? The US has several of the most advanced & well funded law enforcement agencies in the world. It makes since our agencies would be more effective at capturing criminals.

and drug wars between the cartels and police it's alittle more obvious over there right now.

How is the drug / cartel war there any more "obvious" than the drug / gang war here?

Americans are not crossing the border into Mexico for a better life with better wages, unless they are wanted by the law.

This simply isn't true. I know people going over there for real estate & business opportunities. Vacation (and retirement) homes in Mexico are much less expensive. Espeically in relation to beach-front property. A mobile home on beach front in San Diego can cost millions of dollars. A proper estate (read: mansion-like) on the beach a couple hours south (in Mexico) will cost a FRACTION of the price. The price of living is also FAR lower. If your dollar buys more somewhere, moving there has the same effect as creating wealth. Furthermore, to start a business in Mexico is MUCH cheaper, and easier (less regulation) than here in the states.

I also know that much of the corruption we have over here prevents our lawenforcement from doing anything about problems at the border...My opinion.

Which is it? You KNOW it's true, or it's your opinion?

"Which is it? you KNOW it's true, or it's your opinion?" Do you see the last two words you copied??? " ....My opinion" It's my opinion how many times do I have to say that? "How can you say corruption has nothing to do with the serial killers at the border?" Have they arrested any of them yet? There has been over 400 reported murders..And I also stated that Americans were not crossing the border into Mexico for better wages...I mean't your basic American not business owners exposing the Mexican to low wages and sub human safety standards..Can you answer the original question? Or are you just commenting to hijack the thread? MY OPINION..

I have no sympathy, concern, or regard for people who are so horrendously poor that they are "forced" to come here, but who pop out kids like Pez dispensers.

And that's only one reason I don't give a crap about them and their plight. Especially when they come here and turn my neighborhoods, my cities, my state, my country into crap-filled replicas of their home country.

You're damn right I'd cross a border in order to better my families life. People have done this exact same thing for thousands of years, they move to where you can earn a living, it ain't that difficult of a concept.
Thankfully I don't have the need to move to better my lot in life, because I'd imagine it's no fun being desperate enough to jump a border into a foreign country.

hey bird, you shot an airball on this one. so what if people from poor countries want to live here? we have no obligation to take 20 million illegals just because they commit felony invasion. my ancestors came over legally, had to qualify and pass a physical. out of all the people that came over from europe, fully 1/3 were sent back. sure didn't read that in any history books. mexico is not a poor country, it's an overpopulated one. mexico is bi-coastal, full of oil and mineralwealth, and has coniderable arable land. what it also has is a birth rate of a third world country. mexico's population has more than tripled since 1950, whereas ours has doubled. taking in to consideration that 50 million mexicans have moved into this country in that time, the real numbers are staggering. also consider what this huge influx has brought: lowering of blue-collar wages, highway congestion, pollution, damage to our wetlands, drains on government resources etc. individually most of these immigrants are nice people, but en masse they are killing this country. plus the money they make here often goes back over the border. fully 1/4 of the mexican economy is money shipped back to mexico by legal/illegal workers. the world is not raising the standard of living much in third world countries as it's bringing the 1st world down to third world levels.

If you were Mexican and you knew that by crossing the boarder into America.... That you would have a better life, would you cross the boarder illegally?

This is a tough question, but I am glad you posted it.

I was born in the Philippines and came to this country basically as a refugee (long story). I saw my mother, my family struggle through things no one should have to go through. We left our country with nothing and arrive in this country with even less. My mother made many sacrifices and was determined on giving me a better life. We cannot fault those who genuinely want the same thing for themselves and their families.

My point is, having experienced poverty first hand as a child has taught me a great deal and I carry those lessons with me into my adulthood. Poverty, oppression, hunger, lack of access to an education etc. is everywhere, even here in this great land of opportunity. These reasons alone would make me cross the boarder.

***Now I know this maybe a little off topic, but after reading the previous responses, I am inclined to ask-- How many of you have actually ever lived in Mexico or any other poverty-stricken country outside the U.S. How many of you have seen the destruction and worthlessness poverty can cause? Anyone? Hmm, just something to think about.

Those who choose to cross illegally, sometimes do so out of last resort. It's not as easy as one would think, to go through the legal means of coming into America (I’m speaking in broader terms too, not just about Mexico). It takes money, time, education etc. most of which is something immigrants do not have access to in their homeland. There is so much red tape and corruption in the whole process in most countries and it makes it an even harder struggle for those that do want to do it legally.

I think we should have more compassion for those who come into this country for the purpose of a better life and are actually willing to change their circumstances through legal means i.e. working and getting an education etc. It’s also fair to say that those who come to this country for other reasons i.e. drugs, scams etc, and seek only to exploit America’s resources should not warrant the same compassion.

Honestly, the plight of the everyday people is nothing new and it will never go away. Our country's character is defined by its "everyday people”, the foundations of this great nation was built by immigrants illegal or otherwise. Furthermore, an immigrant is not a thief (of jobs) and those who are cannot help themselves. Think about it, are the backbreaking, low wage jobs, farm workers, house cleaners, and lawn workers etc., are these really the jobs you’re competing for? Because if you really think about it, on a larger scale, I don’t know of any illegal workers wearing suits and ties and walking around on Wall Street with corner offices. Do you?

Perhaps I am just a little bit partial, because having worn the other shoe I know what it’s like to be on the other side. I honestly feel that maybe we should be more open-minded, try to see things from another perspective, and that maybe in doing so, we will see change…

Oceans of love, luck and happiness,

Aloha.

I have often observed Mexican farm-workers urinating in the fields. I believe unsanitary practices in the field is how salmonella often gets into our food chain. I have also witnessed, Mexicans that live in the city having no shame in urinating in their own back yard. This is part of their culture.

I don't know what wetlands he is talking about either, but here is a guess:

I have often observed Mexican farm-workers urinating in the fields. I believe unsanitary practices in the field is how salmonella often gets into our food chain. I have also witnessed, Mexicans that live in the city having no shame in urinating in their own back yard. This is part of their culture. Perhaps it is because indoor plumbing is not available in all areas of Mexico and/or the third world.

I have observed Indians gathering up roaches from their apartments, putting them into bags and then dumping them in common hallways. They do this because they don't believe in killing any living things, including pests.

Diversity of culture is not always good. Some cultures embrace nasty practices.

On a related note, why do we call them wetlands now instead of swamps?

I can't believe you lecture someone about farming practices when you suggest that someone taking a p*ss in a field leads to salmonella in food...never mind that by insisting it's part of "their culture" as if white farmers never take a p*ss in the field when the opportunity arises and they need to take a leak...it's nice to see such unabashed, open racist sterotyping right where we can see it.

Next you'll be telling us of the time you ACTUALLY saw a Jew poison a well with disease.

As anyone with any actual farming experience or knowledge of food and crop practices knows and anyone who has paid attention to the news and wasn't just looking to make a cheap racist remark at the expense of Hispanic people, salmonella gets into food crops because untreated waste water or standing water gets pumped onto fields and very often so does pig manure which hasn't been properly treated.

It's funny...I took quick look at the CDC and FDA websites and they didn't have any big alerts out for migrant worker urine contributing to massive salmonella outbreak...they did mention what I just did however. Funny that. Those damn facts getting in the way again instead of crazy anecdotes...how fun is that, I tell ya.

Did you see someone p*ss in a harvested basket of veg? No? Then you have bupkiss. Unless you are suggesting that Hispanic urine is full of super-toxic germs trying to migrate north of the Rio Grande to get better infections, which by the nasty, white sheet and hood tone of your rhetoric and low reality quotient of it I imagine you are

if lumping all whites together is ok, regardless of their country of origin and when they got here, so should lumping all latinos together. the massive influx of latinos into florida is destroying the floridian wetlands. the same with the southwest and california. its overpopulation that's causing the problems, not a guy that needs to piss. latinos used to assimilate. they learned english, taught their children english and played by the rules. now they discourage assimilating. they speak spanish, listen to spanish radio, watch spanish tv and hang out with spanish-speaking people. they cost this country hundreds of billions in extra education costs, interpreters etc. they also can play ignorant and get away with activities that would get a white man in serious trouble. curiously, some of the biggest complainants about the latino invasion are previous generations of latino immigrants that did assimilate. one of my latino buddies that did speak english was tired of constantly have to stop what he was doing to play interpretor. i worked with a latino that had been working in a car detail shop for almost ten years. he didn't have a thousands words of english to answer questions even though they were always the samequestions, i wonder how many of the "let them all in " crowd would be so happy if their jobs were being lost

Please explain to me how mexican are destoying the wetlands?...NOT farm lands, Wetlands

as for your assimualtion concern, I would say that any first generation finds it difficult or is hessitant in assimulating, but with futher genrations, assimulations comes eaiser.

Now I know no one wants a total abandoment of culture...keeping customs of one's homeland make us the US a richer society...

"We have no obligation to take in 20 million illegals just because they commit feloney invasion" I agree..I posed the question which is the title of this thread to see how people would answer if they were in the same place as someone who feels that America has better oppturnities then their own country...I kinda wonder if Mexico is so rich why their plumbing is so fu*ked up...And if they have such a wonderfully rich country why they are here..? I guess they want to abolish the white race the way some have answered it seems they think that Mexico wants to take over... I'm surprised there's still a constition after the last eight years..

It is just as wrong to wrongly accuse someone of being a racist as to actual practice that aberrant bigotry. I am speaking prom personal experience. I am relating to you what I saw with my eyes. That does not make me a racist.

Oh, I'm SURE you saw a Mexican do this...and your insistence that it's a part of THEIR culture and not ours isn't race baiting at all.

Nothing is lower than a race baiter. You discriminate against people who speek the truth if it does not fit your agenda. Race baiting is an evil and abhorrent practice. It also tends to hurt the very people that you are trying to show sympathy for.

Race baiting has led to people unfairly losing career and job opportunities. Victims of racebaters have been unfairly stigmatized for life. The end results of race bating is equivalent to racism. Think first before you make cavaleir accusations of race baiting.

Race baiter disgust me because they hurt people and they are cruel with their careless random attacks..

MUFFIN... does it sting when someone points out the obvious in your post...the fact that it is based TOTALLY on anecdotal evidence, with a clearly bigoted bias and a complete lack of ACTUAL knowledge but in fact shows a traditional pattern of racist behavior patterns that goes back centuries, even as far back as medieval anti-Semitism?

Tough darts. Make a substantive contribution to the discussion then, Cletus.

All the Constitution states is a child born here is American...How would you change that statement to stop illegal immagration...?

Not that this would EVER happen, but for fun-lets say your wife just delivered a child in hospital, and the staff came to you and said please prove citizenship for you and your wife...How would you do that?

you want a Citizenship card? or a tatoo on your forearm with your ID number on it...How willing we are to give to the beast...^^^

it's simple sa guy. all that needs to be changed is to say a child born legally in this country by legal citizens. people sneaking over the border to have anchor babies aren't here legally, hence there would be no automatic citizenry. don't be surprised in the future if microchips aren't mandatory for id. ss cards are so easy to get. here in portland a cannery was raided and over 600 illegals were found. over 3/4s had a ss card. one of the big problems with immigration is that there are different standards for different countries. i agree with you that keeping some of your previous culture is fine but keeping it all is un-american.

If I married a Canadian woman and we lived here in the US, she wanted to keep her Canadian citizenship, our child would be classifed as what nationality? Canadian? Why?

Hes wasnt born in Canada, has no ties to Canada other than his mother. If he were born here and lives here why should Canada be his Mother country. Hes as much Amrican as he is Candian...

nice try. the canadian woman would be here LEGALLY. there are processes that would have to be satisfied for this to happen. i've been involved in hockey here in portland since kennedy and know many canadian nationals that have married american citizens and one that married a walloon girl. these children often have dual citizenship. there may be different citizenship levels but they are all LEGAL.
