| Any other grammar nazis around these parts? Posted: 7/4/2009 8:16:21 AM | I completely understand. As a high school English teacher, I cringe while reading most profiles. I do admit that at times I have chosen not to give an encouraging response because of the poor spelling, grammar, and syntax in a profile. The lack of attention to these areas tell me the person does not find them important. Since they are important to me, I think I would be very frustrated in a relationship with a person who can not communicate properly.
The profile is like a resume; it is a chance to make a good impression. If a person does not have good grammar skills, he or she should type the profile in word and make use of the spell check and grammar check before pasting it into POF.

| Any other grammar nazis around these parts? Posted: 7/4/2009 10:57:28 AM | grammar nazis attack me on a regular basis. first of all, when im online i speak in a conversational tone. i use my words to express how i wld speak naturally. i have an accent and many times i write in my accent also. im a writer and im not writing a novel with spell check when im in a converstion. i do not use grammer rules specifically with the intent to keep it casual. txt speak is used out of habit as i txt often.. i think its silly tht so many ppl wld wnt to judge a person on the way they type.. i wld much rather txt speak, abbreviations, misspelled words and punctuation problems from an interesting man; than a carefully worded, perfectly spelled form letter from a boring bitter judgemental man. lighten up! | |

| Any other grammar nazis around these parts? Posted: 7/4/2009 11:20:00 AM | I have ceased being a Grammar Nazi. Now, I just skip over the textspeak in posts and profiles, disregard messages with inconprehensible language, and ignore the urge to correct laziness. I found that attempting to decypher the gibberish was making me way too cranky.
If those who cannot use their native language properly wish to make an impression on me, they must try some other method. I did say native language, of course. If I detect the hint of foreign influence in a message, I will try my best to respond in Spanish, French or Cree, all of which I have some limited knowledge.
Otherwise, good luck to the poster, mailer or caller. So sorry, delete!

| Any other grammar nazis around these parts? Posted: 7/4/2009 11:34:02 AM | | Hey, in other places where writing isn't a large part of the process - grammar and spelling aren't as big a deal. I strongly recommend that those who aren't the best at spelling or grammar and have no interest in trying to improve it in any way meet people in places it's not on display. | |

I agree, I wish people will spend time communicating properly. I would take them more seriously and it does look more polite. It's akin to copying gangsta moves, once the kids see it, it spreads like wildfire and is unstoppable! Degeneration Z!

| Any other grammar nazis around these parts? Posted: 7/5/2009 9:28:15 AM | My new favorite is "creative" first names with randomly - purposely - placed apostrophes. Even the "great" Beyonce has her apostrophe in the wrong place on her name. By how her family spelled it, we should be pronouncing it bee-yon-SAY, not bee-YON-say. I've seen a boatload of these on TV. Just stick and accent mark or apostrophe anywhere... make yourselves happy ! | |

uh... So men who are literate are boring and bitter and use form letters...? Ya lost me there... The way you write is disrespectful to the reader. If you aren't considerate when you communicate your message, then there is a good chance you are inconsiderate in other areas as well. Let's just say , it's telling.. Employers know this all too well...

| Any other grammar nazis around these parts? Posted: 7/5/2009 6:08:28 PM | This perfectionistic Virgo is a grammar Nazi and I make no qualms about it.
Communication is tantamount to getting ANYTHING done or achieved.
But if you make not no sense...........I'm gonna have to tell you!

| Any other grammar nazis around these parts? Posted: 7/10/2009 1:08:57 AM | This, more so than anything else, drives me insane; reading profiles and posts where it's some giant blurb or run-on-sentence. It drives me up the wall.
I hope that's properly edited. *shrug*
I am not a Grammar Nazi.
I notice your use of a semicolon between the independent clause and the dependent clause; do you think you have used it correctly?

... we all occasionally make errors . But there are those who go above and beyond. I must admit it's quite the turn off when a woman can't write a basic sentence, spell common words or figure out when to start a new paragraph.
One can always become a senator, sit on the judiciary committee, and determine the fate of the USSC for next score years or so -
"Sotomayor has overwhelming if not unanimous support among the Senate's 58 Democrats and two independents - and is likely to win a number of votes among the 40 Republicans as well. "Each senator will make up their own mind," Sessions said."

| Any other grammar nazis around these parts? Posted: 7/17/2009 8:09:24 AM | I agree. Incorrect spelling, no caps, all caps, no apostrophes, run-on sentences, no paragraphs, improper grammar and (not to put too fine a point on it) ebonics, make me cringe, have to work too hard to try to understand what a person is saying, and run for the hills.
If a person can't write, how are they going to express their feelings verbally? If you want to communicate your feelings in person, learn how to write.

| Any other grammar nazis around these parts? Posted: 7/17/2009 10:03:30 AM | Dear Friends,
MLA and APA are the death of decent style, existing to facilitate reading for those who have lost appreciation of style, having too many papers to read, edit, grade, or correct, to care about euphony.
Quotation marks according to the older English style guides have more complex rules. To argue that trite research papers written by those who would not have been admitted to a university fifty years ago should constitute lucidity and beauty is to argue that Mr Obama is as fine a writer as Mr Chief Justice Marshall, at which point, uh, ya see, English is a living, uh, language, the way, folks, ya' see people talk.....
Thank you, no. APA and MLA should be tossed, and serious reading of the KJB, Shakespeare, the speeches of the great lawyers and parliamentarians again revered.
If a sentence sound not eloquent, its content, however true, is mere instruction.
Cheers, M | |

| Any other grammar nazis around these parts? Posted: 7/20/2009 1:20:15 PM | Hmmm, grammar nazis, I would love to line them all up and shooted every single one of them and see how their like it, I just can't stand putting talking about my "grammar" bye: Having bad grammarr doesn't mean your thick, as I don't see myself as been thick as most of the people I see online are and their don't reallly know what is going on in life.
If a girl is so up herself, why should I bother with them, its their loss I guess

| Any other grammar nazis around these parts? Posted: 7/21/2009 4:14:25 PM | I am also a grammar nazi. I'm not too bad though... I just find intelligence (or displays of it) attractive.
The butchering of the English language gets on my nerves. Textspeak has taken over and sometimes it seems like people are just plain lazy. i just dont no whats wrong with ppl

| Any other grammar nazis around these parts? Posted: 7/21/2009 9:22:22 PM | I feel you. (minds out of gutter) I get a barrage of emails where a guy cannot make an entire sentence without misspelling a word. Delete. I will never forget this one, and if you are readund this-i apologize.. He could not even spell his hometown. Really?!? He stated he enjoyed hicking. At first I thought it was cute, as I myself love nerding. I found out he didn't mean it in that sense after seeing he liked bicking, too. I will always wonder why this man received a diploma. As for punctuation goes. Most people are just too lazy to capitalize. And my huge run on paragraph here?! I have yet to figure out on my blackberry how to do it. It irritates me to no end. | |
