Hi and thanks for the times.
I will have to leave on Saturday morning, should be there by one. One night out of the lower mainland is a good thing.

Sorry you can't make it. I agree, hopefully it won't take another three years before the next camping event.

Glad to help. I'm pleased to hear you can make it for at least one night.

My neighbour replaced his cedar shake roof recently so I have secured cedar kindling for campfire.

Speaking of fire, the road to campground goes through our forest, so please, no flicking of cigarette butts out the window. If this hot weather continues the woods will be tinder dry.

I gather that some people are kinda shy about signing up but may show up.

As of now the weather forecast is great!

Can I be a miracle! I live on the Island and I could meet Monalecia in Comox and then drive up to Powell lake. I have a van that seats 7, but since I have a two year old in a car seat, I think that I could reasonally carry 3-4 additional people comfortably.

I know you'll all have a great time, unfortunately my plans to attend this event are too complicated, even though I started planning awhile ago. Sorry to miss this, it sounds like a beautiful place to enjoy a variety of things. I'll have to meet the mainlanders closer to their stomping grounds in future.

Monalecia

It is regrettable that you cannot make it after all, especially after the effort that we made to somehow make it possible for you to join us.
Another time perhaps.
I promise I won't let the dark chocolate go to waste.

Nice to learn others are planning to attend too. I'm looking forward to meeting you all.

Weather and Campfires

The weather forecast remains sunny and quite warm.... and not cold at night.

Thinking of the current wildfire situation in the Kelowna area and how dry it is here... we've not had any rain for some time now, I just checked with Bruce the caretaker about campfires.

He said no campfires are permitted between 10am and 6pm. However he is expecting a complete campfire ban to be put in effect any day now, by next week if not this week. I will try to remember to check with on Thursday for and will post here an update on the campfire ruling. I suggest you be prepared for not having campfires... including for cooking.

Lights

There won't be much moonlight. I expect with the clear sky we'll have some starlight and probably no campfire light for dancing into the evening, so you might want to bring your portable lanterns and solar patio lights.

I haven't fished in freshwater for many years. In May when I originally organized this event I asked the caretaker about fishing. He advised the fishing was good then but wouldn't be good now, due to the water being warm.

You might as well leave your fishing tackle at home. Then you'll have room for more beer and weiners.

I am fairly certain you are talking about fishing from a boat, not casting from the shore.

Is that correct?

Thanks for the updated fishing information. I stand corrected.

Been camping there off and on now for over a week and my bf and his son have fished a few times off the bluffs at 2nd beach with no luck (just lots of little fish), maybe with a casting rod and different lures who knows????? But from what I have seen with people there hasn't been great fishing near the shore at all.

As for fires......Like a previous poster stated they are allowed b4 10am and after 6pm, this was still the case as of this evening.

Have a great time camping everyone.

This afternoon I spoke with Bruce, the campground caretaker. He advised me that there will be a total campfire ban in effect on Friday, the first day of our event.

So there is no point in bringing firewood.

There will not be any fire for cooking.

I will bring a propane portable campstove and a small grill. Hopefully others will bring some cooking appliances too and we can all share.

starman ^^^

Regarding you catching the 7:30 pm sailing from Horseshoe Bay read message #49 on page 2!

Not having much indication from anyone if they are bringing RVs or tents I might prove to be mistaken but yes, I think there will be room for your truck and camper.

To answer your questions:.

Yes, a generator is permitted. If it is quiet it won't be a problem. If it is not a quiet generator he recommends you bring lots of extension cords so it can be placed far back in the bush. It would have to be placed on a sheet of plywood to reduce risk of it sparking a fire. I got the impression Bruce could provide the plywood.

Yes, dogs are permitted but take note... dogs must be tied up at all times.

Yes, there are lots of trails on which you can ride your quad. Please ensure the spark arrestor is functioning properly and the heat guards on the bottom are in place.

I'm ready to head out and pitch camp.

As I still get requests for clarification on getting to the campsite...

Coming from the Lower Mainland
When you get off the ferry at Saltery Bay stay on the highway.until you enter city limits (50 Km/hr). You'll pass the Beach Gardens Resort on your left and then at the Thunderbay corner store turn right on Joyce Ave.

Stay on Joyce, going through the four traffic lights at Glacier, Duncan, Barnett and Alberni streets and proceed past Quality Foods store and Powell River General Hospital to the stop sign at Manson Ave.

Refer to directions below for the remainder of the journey. ++

Coming from Vancouver Island
When you get off the ferry in Powell River (Westview) drive up to the traffic light on Marine Ave.
Turn left on Marine and proceed north to the next traffic light at Alberni St.
Turn right on Alberni and go up the hill to the next traffic light at Joyce Ave.
Get in the left-turn lane and proceed left on Joyce, past the Quality Foods store and around the bend, past Powell River General Hospital to the stop sign at Manson Ave.

++ The remainder of the directions are applicable to everyone coming over by either ferry.

Turn left on Manson Ave. and go one block north and turn right on Cassiar St.
Follow Cassiar which then is Yukon after you round the left turn. A short distance from that you'll see at Haslam St. a sign advertising Haywire Bay and Inland Lake (watch carefully for the sign for it is partially obscured by foliage).

Turn right on Haslam and go up straight up. At the end of the pavement and the speed bump continue straight (veering slightly left there).

From that point on you are on the forestry service road which is gravel, 30 km/hour (radar patrolled). Follow the signs.
Take your time and keep in mind there is a one-lane bridge at bend at the bottom of the long descent about half-way there.

When you get to park stay to the right (one-way only) and you'll go past the caretaker's cabin on your right and the very first campsite, on your right, will be our groupsite, so marked with a sign on a tree.
===========

See you all soon!

Have a great weekend everyone, including those who were unable to join us.
