It's not so much about what they put out...more to the point is whether you believe it at face value...

Hey, no one's more worried about media consolidation than me. However, when people start talking about the great media "conspiracy" for the hearts and minds of the citizenry, it becomes clear to me that they've never worked in a busy newsroom. They've never faced a half-hour deadline with 500 to 1,000 words to write about one thing or another. Believe me, no one is "vetting" anything. The in-the-trenches journalist isn't passing his piece by a think tank of PR hacks. He's sweating bullets because he knows what he writes had better be good, clear and without errors or he's going to be joining the vast unemployed fairly quickly.

Unless, of course, you're talking television...even then, there's those damn deadlines again. However, people like Lou Dobbs, Bill O'Reilly, (insert fave talking head here) aren't journalists, they're editorialists. They take news and spin it up to their personal bias. The rest are just talking heads.

The goal in journalism is timeliness. Get the story first. Sorry, there's just not enough time to craft those subtle subliminal messages into the copy to make you vote one way or another.

Is there political bias in the media? You bet...on the editorial page. However, they're pretty evenly split. But it's no more and no less so than the rest of the population. And those with particular political leaning are going to glom onto the source that most appeals to their political preference.

Bottom line is, if people are really paying attention, they're getting enough content from both sides to make up their own minds. The problem arises when people are too lazy to bother trying. That's when they do things like vote based on the number of lawn signs they saw. Then there's the conspiracy fans who want to see the world falling apart and so create the story to fit the ideal...including things like the great media "conspiracy."

Another thing. While "mainstream" media is pretty consolidated, it should be pointed out that more alternative sources of news and information are available now than at any other time in history! The Internet allows everyone to be a "journalist." Yeah, there's issues with that too, but c'mon, nothing's perfect.

I don't trust stats at all, I want to know who did the poll/study, why, who they asked, what they asked, how biased was it, etc., the last thing I do is take the media at face value. I base my vote on watching and hearing the politicians, it takes me a long time to make the decision of who to vote for, and I am more often than not, unhappy with the choices. I do not like being pandered to or manipulated, hence my totally giving up on McCain when he brought that awful Palin into the picture, I would not have voted for Al Gore for dog catcher and I still can't stand his pushing of global warming, I didn't have to watch W. to know that Bush II was a wasted vote and not a mistake I made twice. The media doesn't lead me but it does give me ample time to see who people really are, one only has to look closely and pay attention.

I don't.

As a matter of fact, I totally stopped watching TV. Also, I haven't seen much of real news in the networks at all. The majority of the "news" that people get from cable networks are editorials, debate shows & sensationalism.

After making the mistake of voting for one of the son's of satan who now runs the U.N. I don't trust anyone or anything from mainstream or secular alternative news outlets. Both streams seem to be ran from the same people at the top. They both lie and always have an agenda. The only news outlets I trust are the Christian alternative news or the extremist fringe news.

Statistics are always manipulated concerning mainstream news. They're never honest.

After seeing the headlines about FOX News today concerning their splicing of film to exaggerate their right wing reporting ( Shawn Hannity and possibly others), I'm Pis*ed!
If they got away with this for as long as they have, ............
NO! I don't trust the media! We lost our honest journalism when we lost Cronkite

I don't trust the MSM AT ALL.
I don't know how many times I've tried to talk to people about the economic mess, and they think that everything is fine!
The newspapers were really culpable because they took so much real estate money that they refused to talk about the bubble at all.
I read quite a few blogs and economic journals, and most of what I read doesn't make it anywhere near the MSM.

It really does seem like a concerted effort to keep people ignorant.

As far as I'm concerned the media just likes to stir things up.
I vote who I think would be good. I won't let the government or media decide for me.

I watch them all, and it's funny seeing the audiences they pander to.

MSNBC is so left wing it's scary....especially that Rachel Maddox lady...wow is she a left wing nutjob.

ABC is the "All Barack Channel"

FOX 100% leans right, no doubt about that.

People like Rachel Maddox, Hannity, Beck....people need to understnad they aren't NEWS, it's entertainment.

I trust the media.
That's the whole problem.
I've learned exactly how much I can trust the media.
I trust the media to tell me practically nothing worthwhile.
