How far would you travel for a love affair?
Posted: 7/4/2009 7:09:18 AM

The main question to pose when initiating a long distance relationship is "would one of you move to be with the other person?" If the answer is an honest YES, then I'd say go for it. Myself? How far would I travel? I wouldn't. I have a great job and I would be hard pressed to find a similar one in the same field in another city/state/country. Would I start a LDR with a lady from online? Well, yeah, possibly, but as long as she understood my situation. I think a lot of hearts get broken online from LDRs, and I have a low pain threshold. Best of luck to those of you who are involved in a LDR. No situation is exactly the same and who knows? Maybe you found that person of your dreams from far away!

... I tend to agree with you. I am in the same situation as you, I have a great job that I love, I would not want to give that up plus all my family and friends are here... everything that is familiar to me.

I met someone when I went state side a couple of years ago and we just clicked, I haven't felt like that about anyone for years.... unfortunately reality sinks in. It wasn't possible. We still maintain contact but we will probably always remain long distance friends.

"Thread: How far would you travel for a love affair? "

Depends on:

-Equipment;
-Provisions;
-Dedication of and to fellow travellers;
-Size of schnaz
-Oxygen supply line over the Karpathians;
-A quantity of camels (to keep the natives happy);
-Seasonal hunting permits;
-Coconuts and tinged roast dugkennies;
-Thermostat;
-Rheostat;
-Powdered rhyno ize -- what's it called, the rhyno's pointy thing on his nose? You take lots of it in powdered form because some tribes think that homely girls are m0re fertile. An explorer has to be able to handle situations. If you lose the respect of the natives, you're a dead man. And if you lose that of the women, you are... oyvey. Try not to think of it. It's fate worse than death.
-Thermos;
-Rheos.

Seems like I've done the coast to coast more than once, even if it was only an almost good idea.

At this time in my life it would be nice to find someone locally though, LOL I gave up driveing a few years back when my eyes were periodically being affected by the sun light and dusk

Now I get around on a electric bike and good old public transportation.

One hell of a come down for someone who used to race & road rally both sports cars and motorcycles.

I may still be good as a navigator though

It always depends on what the other person has led you think about taking a chance to often marrieds pretended to be single and someone other than they truly were.

But the heart always holds out for hope

I can't go anywhere at the moment because I have shared custody of 3 children, which keeps me in Australia, but otherwise I would have already travelled to the US.

Darn, now I have to try and cash in the tickets to Ohio I got her??? J/K!!
Actually, I knew a lot of oz ladies from Paltalk and *most* of them were sweethearts. I knew several of them who did come to the US and traveled around meeting people they knew from online. And, if my job permitted it, Australia is one of those far away places I'd consider moving to if I met someone on here who stole my heart. I visited Sydney some years ago and really loved it! (they just need to learn how to drive on the right side of the road ) The UK is another place I'd consider moving to as well, as I've visited England/Wales/Scotland several times since 2002 (of course, they have the driving issue there as well! )

That is a huge step to take, however. And perhaps the OP was talking about going somewhere to have a "fling" - now thats a whole different animal. If that were the true question, then I'd have to say as far as my pocket book and passport would allow! :-)
(not that I'm a "flingy" type of guy)

I developed strong feelings and a powerful connection with a man from Missouri two years ago. We were giving serious consideration to his moving up here, so it was not the distance that broke us up.

To be truthful, I am no longer interested in moving south of the border or across the ocean for love, but would move to BC for love, lol! Such a pretty place, and still in Canada.....

I haven't even gotten to the morality factor. That's between the gov, his God, and his wife.
But he left the country without letting even his staff know his destination, without any emergency contingencies in place, inevitably to lose his place on the GOP short list for their next presidential candidate, and losing the honor of chairing the national Governors' Assoc.

To paraphrase Jay Leno, . . . . What Was He Thinking? Why commit political suicide?
Chutspa? Ego? Balls? Stupidity? Mental Illness? Breakdown?

I do not condone his actions, but when you think about it, does this behavior say that matters of the heart overrule ALL other matters? He really did give up a lot.

Then again, he could have just been vain enough to think he could get away with no one finding out. I'm sure we will never know.

This isn't a reply to anyone in general...just to the topic itself.

What most people are not "catching" here is the term "love affair"...meaning...temporary.
I'm no booty call and I certainly would not travel to some strange guy in some strange town. How convenient for HIM. If the man is serious in getting to know you, he will be a gentleman and get a room in your town and you both can spend the day together. If he insists on staying at your place..its a booty call.

I met someone once who did rent a hotel room in my area and he certainly was a gentleman, not to mention unbelievably handsome and from Argentina. He rented a room nearby at a hotel and we spent the day together. We dated for about 3 months and then he had to move out of state for work. I still miss him to this day.

Maybe we are into semantics, here.

For a "love" affair, there may be different boundaries than just a love "affair".

If we feel that we are truly connected, and have a possibility of a real future of life and love, then I guess there are no limits! It all depends on time and finances.
(Been there, failed).

But if it's just for an "affair"....(funny how that word always seems to connotate that one is cheating on someone) then it depends on how much that one night stand might be worth to you, knowing that it will go no further.

Guess it all boils down to the same...what are the risks/costs, and what are the rewards?
Possible good long-term exclusive, or one-nighter!

I'll save my money for the possible good long-term....and if she is halfway across the country, I'll take the chance.

If you have read a lot of my previous posts, you know I've done that, never did get to make the trip....and learned quite a lesson, in the meantime!

Don't know that I'd travel across the street for "an affair" lol! For a relationship? Very far indeed. I'm kinda one of those "wither thou goest, there will I go" girls. But -- it has to pretty much already BE in place. . . . AM willing (have been willing) to talk pretty much around the world. Came close to moving to Greece when I was in my thirties for a really lovely Macedonian. . . . Did move to China in my forties (but just for a job; just happened to meet my second husband there). And sold my house and moved to Berkeley in my early fifties to re-try an old college relationship. Don't regret any of it: you live and with luck you learn a great deal, lol!

I would travel to the moonfor the right guy. I am just a romantic, plus I don't have many ties here.
I take that back, lol, I would travel no more than a 12 hour drive, so to be close enough to my grandkids and kids.

I wrote this poem a few years ago and was reading it. Watch out guys. LOL

Take Your Pick

Men, men everywhere
Take your pick, but do not stare
Some are tall, some are lean
Some look really good in jeans
Some are short, some are fat
Some look like they swallowed a rat
Some have brown eyes, some blue
Some look like they would make good stew
Put them in a pot, stir it twice
Add a little salt and maybe some spice
Cook them until they are medium-rare
Be really careful not to burn their hair
Cook them up and fish them out
They can’t stand the heat, what’s that about?
Drain the water and let them out
Giggle and laugh while they pout
Display them for the world to see
Don’t worry guys, this is only a fantasy

...I have to hand it to you guys/gals who are willing to 'go the distance' or take a chance on love. I'm not a big risk taker I guess when it comes to affairs of the heart, either that or I just haven't met anyone that I would want to give up what I have here.

Miss Wooby and HD...I admire the he11 out of you two, you reach for the brass ring.....hugs.

speaking as one of those cute ozzies.....aussies actually.....i sure don't consider myself a bit slow.

i'm adventurous and love travelling to somewhere new.
i've travelled thousands of miles a few times for meets and don't regret any of them. i'd do it again any time, gladly.
if you meet someone you have a connection with and are in a position to travel anywhere, ever, why not do so?
a beautiful man i met in australia was a resident of tennessee. it didn't stop him from visiting here 3 times. i'm so glad we had that time together. neither of us thought the distance was too far, if anything that added to the fun we had together.

you never know what the future may hold.
go for it and enjoy!

I did the LDR thing for a year, then moved 12oo miles to make the relationship work. Sigh ... the relationship crumbled, but i wouldnt trade the experience. However, I doubt I'd travel more than a few hours away next time around.

"Oh what would you do for a Klondike bar?"

How far would I travel?

I live in the country. EVERYWHERE is long distance. (Well, except for the convience store, but I prefer not to pay through the nose for my milk and sodas.)

I'be been in two long distance relationships. One 6 hours away and the other 3 hours away. I had no problem with them.

Oh, sure, the drive is long. At first. However, after the oh, say, third trip, it seems to not take as long to get to your destination. Sure, it REALLY is the same amount of time and distance, but I think when you start recognizing landmarks it makes the trip seem to be shorter. Sorta like when you've been away from home, it doesn't seem to take a long getting home as it did to go.

So, how far would I travel? Based upon the past I'd say anywhere between 1 mile and 300 (appx 6 hour drive).

When I was really young I drove 40 miles each way to see my girl friend; of course she made it worth it.

Personally, I'm open to meeting someone who lives in a different location because of the fact I'm not very rooted where I live now. I like the East Coast/Mid-Atlantic and although the Midwest has a lot to offer, St. Louis is kinda ghetto. It's the Gateway City, which means that you look for the passageway out as soon as you get here!

Look, I'm all into 'bloom where you're planted', but there's something to be said about the quality of the soil, too.

I wouldn't mind getting to know someone over the long distance. Letter writing can be an excellent way of developing a relationship. It also allows for some space for the relationship to grow. I know there are also draw backs to this, but I think this is one of the positive things about the internet in that it can bring people close who live far away from each other. Of course travel is expensive, and everyone has their limits.

message 114, that is a very gruesome poem. i think i'll sign off now and smell the flowers.

an affair, is easily found. a true love? never say never. but, how to know in just a few concentrated weeks? one would have to be flexible enough to try it out for awhile in the other's backyard. i have the airline miles, but never (to date) found myself in that situation. even dating someone nearby takes time to know him "better".

did do some travelling back and forth between states in my younger years. no love and no affair either! i do know of two pof couples for whom it worked out (including wooby up there!). with respect to the younger couple who both post often on pof, he did move across the ocean to be with her. they are much younger though.

i also imagine that the person doing the ultimate moving would need to feel that half of the residence was his or hers. that is a crucial relationship issue, no matter how far the "loved one" is.

with respect to the governor, he sounded "manic" to me. no impulse control and unclear thinking. glad he resigned. they need different protocols to deal with an ER of any sort in the future, so that the assistant governor can take over in case of a real emergency.

"I've gone 2500 miles."

Did you at least have a good vacation?

Not trying to be smart but not one meet and greet on the internet has ever netted me someone I would want to date. Yes, I have real tried to give it a fair chance. Travel many miles, I don't think so. I will use my dollars for vacation that at least produce pleasure. If it doesn't work locally, why would anyone think it would work across the country or even (God forbid) internatinally.
