Vista might run fine on brand new hardware assembled with vista in mind, but I'd hate to see what would happen if I tried installing it on my old sempron based pc.
Yeah, its old, but its still well suited for daily internets, and dropping $600-$1000 isn't something I feel like doing right now.
Conversely, ubuntu runs awesome on it, no hardware problems or driver issues

CentOS v5.3 now for my main server Windows Server 2003 (Dell Desktop) Fedora 11 dual booting w/Debian Lenny (Dell Laptop) Vista dual booting w/Mandriva (HP Laptop) openSUSE v11.1(Mini Dell 12") Ubuntu 9.04 (Mini Dell 9") & A few other distros in VMWare
WOW, you've got quite a few computers in your home!
What are the mini computers like in terms of processing power and net access?
I only gave other o/s 5 nanaseconds consideration because I'm too lazy to run dual systems and the fact that I like to game. Most games I play are only Bill Gates compatible. Another consideration was to sync it up with work and school so I didn't have to learn another operating system. How different are the other o/s?
re: VISTA, no weird glitches. IT is a memory hog but other than the odd games and such were it's not supported by VISTA, it's more stable than my XP home edition SP3.

i built my computer cuz my old one was just that, old and slow and my needs increased so i needed more power to do the things i needed to do. XP SP3 x86 just wasn't getting it done with 2gb memory and a 2ghz amd athlon dual core. I knew I was gonna need an am2+ mobo, x64 for the extra memory, and media center so vista ultimate was a no brainer for me. building my own versus buying in store or online saved me about $1000 considering my current setup.
i did install vista business x86 on my laptop which was built only to run xp and it ran just the same. so when i say unfounded, in my case alone, i mean unfounded. no issues related to the OS. the one and only issue i've had with my computer was a bios update where i initiated the error and was easily fixed. nothing to do with the OS. so i don't know where the vista hate comes from. i mean, yeah i do, but from my experience, it's mostly unwarranted.

| What operating system are you using? Posted: 6/25/2009 11:12:44 PM | XP Pro on two machines, Windows 2000 on a couple more. The beast running NT 4.0 is rarely used now, and will be retired imminently, although many parts will live on. I only chose XP 2 years ago when I ran into an app that wouldn't run on 2K.
And, there's the vintage Toshiba portable that boots to DOS if the hard drive is feeling like it. And the Apple ][+ clone that may still boot to Apple DOS, or possibly even CP/M if the Z80 card were installed.

I work with computers for a living & still going to school for I.T. stuff so I've accidentally collected a few extras.
The Mini Dells are great, I got them 'as is' from the Dell Outlet at a discount. my complaints about the mini dells: -12" maxes out at 1gb memory (ram) ,...so I got the 9" w/more ram and the keyboard is a little smaller than I would have liked but it is portable.
Both have Intel Atoms @1.6GHz (processors) >not bad for a mini -Great for surfing & small tasks -Great WiFi capabilities
For beginners, Ubuntu 9.04 & Ubuntu Remix are both excellent. Very easy to learn & use. Its nice not to spend money on everything, you just pick out what you want and say "install" & you don't need to worry about viruses (they do exist for Linux, just uncommon to get one) (*Use Xubuntu Alternate Install for older PCs - minimum 64mb ram)
For Windows games on linux, see WINE (not the best way to game but it works) There are also free games & online games made for Linux (see previous PoF thread- 'Linux Games')
Once you get the hang of Ubuntu, you should be fine with any other distro (just small differences -depending on the distro)

Thanks so much for the information. I'm going to tag this thread for when I am in the market for a mini to show my computer guy. Now that I have knowledge of other non hogging RAM o/s (which is why I never purchased a mini), I may just get one for myself to surf the net this year. I don't think I'll game on a 9"....that would be pure torture.

The MSI Wind is also highly rated: http://www.msimobile.com/level2_productlist.aspx?id=3 & Asus (not acer) makes great netbooks too: http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/asus-eee-pc-4g/4505-3121_7-32466960.html www.asus.com/ ______________________________________
For the OS: http://www.ubuntu.com/ http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download (get the 32bit version)
If you want to dual boot with windows, an easy way is to use wubi:
http://wubi-installer.org/ "No need to burn a CD. Just run the installer, enter a password for the new account, and click "Install", go grab a coffee, and when you are back, Ubuntu will be ready for you."
"if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application."
Wubi Requirements:
>Memory 256 MB memory
>Harddisk Space 5 GB harddisk space
>Operating System Windows 98, 2000, XP, Vista Have Fun

| What operating system are you using? Posted: 6/26/2009 10:01:56 AM | Well, what i've really grown to love about linux is the shift from concentrating on hardware requirements to software requirements.
Say I had an old P4 machine with onboard video that could boot off USB, but I had no working IDE drives kicking around, and wanted something capable of playing xvid videos on my TV, along with mp3s, and maybe some network streaming. I have geexbox (http://www.geexbox.org) running very well on such hardware off a 256 meg flash drive.
Or, I needed to run a recent version of firefox with adobe flash etc on a currently supported OS, but had outdated hardware, and didn't want it bogged down with an overly flashy GUI with transparencies, and 3d effects. Thanks to linux's very modular design, you can pick and choose your gui from a very long list, and configure it to work exactly as you want it to. Think windows 95, with up-to-date hardware support, and security fixes running on a computer 45 times more powerful than it was designed to run on. Very fast, and very possible, especially when the entire operating system is loaded in to ram, and the hard disk isn't being touched.
Linux can do some pretty brain-boggling things, provided you take the time to learn about it.

I have no problems with both of my my vistas and I just love it greatly, way better then XP IMO.
I just installed Ubuntu, anyone hear of Satanic and know what it is like, I saw it once on a friends PC and I just fell in love with it.

I knew there was at least one OS X user on here. Care to share your thoughts on OS X?
Make that at least two, first the computer list -
work: laptop running XP Pro, in the office it is connected to an external monitor/keyboard/trackball, only an external trackball. Also shared access to a MicroVax(PowerPC) running OpenVMS.
home: 2 dead PC's running MS 2k(I'll fix them eventually) PC running Red Hat V9 iMac G4 running OS X(Tiger) - it's the old half-golf ball version Mac Mini(Intel Core Duo) running Leopard.
My thoughts on OS X, it's just light years better than Windows(any version). Things just work, it is stable - the only time it needs a restart is if there is a power outage or an update requires it. Installing most applications involves dragging a file from the Finder window(the Mac equivalent to Explorer) to the applications folder - done!! Uninstalling an application involves dragging its folder to the trashcan and then emptying said trashcan, no waiting around while Windows calculates if it has enough disk space to delete the application! I did have a problem with later versions of Safari v3(Apple's bundled Internet Browser) running on Tiger, it would constantly hang up but the 'Force Quit' utility would kill it first time every time without needing a reboot. Even Microsoft Office(2004 version) is slicker on OS X. I am using the old G4 iMac to post this.

I agree. I didn't know I could love a computer until I got this iMac. *love* Plus, the 24" screen kicks a**.

| What operating system are you using? Posted: 6/27/2009 11:58:08 AM | I use.... :takes a deep breath:
3 Computers ---- Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 w/SP3 ---- Windows Vista Business x64 w/SP2 ---- Windows XP Professional w/SP3 2 Laptops ---- Windows Vista Home Premium w/SP1 ---- MAC OS X (Leopard) 5 Virtual Machines ----- Windows 2003 Server Standard w/SP1 ----- Windows 2000 Professional w/SP4 ----- Debian "Lenny" 5.0 (KDE Desktop) ----- FreeBSD v7.2 ----- Windows 7 Ultimate RC1
:breaths:
I've had great experiences with all of them but have to say Windows Vista was complete GARBAGE until I installed Service Pack 1, before Service Pack 1, I'd have constant freezing and sluggishness from just having the operating system installed. If you never experienced Windows Vista before Service Pack 1, consider yourself lucky, it has come a long way!

We won't go into how much hard drive space is available for these installs..... lol :)
Or how much scrap parts I have around here,,,, oh wait....
There are two more computers here that have everything, but their just put to the side...
1) An old Intel Celeron computer, last installed on it was....... Windows 98 SE i think?? 2) An old AMD Athlon computer,,, which has windows xp w/sp2.....
LOL, I have a BFG Tech card that has a lifetime warranty, I best call them up and have it fixed. Maybe they'll upgrade me since it is so old!

Well, for all these virtual machines to be supported, I need a LOT of HDD space.
Right now I have 2TB to 2.5TB worth of pure storage space, on top of the HDDs used for standard installs.
I plan on getting a new motherboard probably when Windows 7 is released which will have SATA RAID 10, in which case I'll probably triple that space and computer memory so I'll have even more virtual machines

I loved my Mac until it died and Apple Care wouldn't fix it. I had an iBook G4 and apparently they all had problems with the GPU separating from the Logic Board. After I figured out what happened, I researched it and there were many unhappy iBook people who had the same problem with AppleCare not honoring the warranty. I found an online petition against Mac and signed it then later got an email saying they were willing to pay something like $200 restitution for my $1100.00 Mac + $100 Apple Care Service (which was worthless)
I now have a broken Mac that will cost about $800 dollars (parts alone) to fix b/c I need to replace the Logic Board.
Anyway, just giving potential mac buyers a heads-up on the iBook G4 Laptop (2001ish model) So if you see a cheap used mac ibook, thats why they are selling it for less than the others w/same specs.
The experience was enough to make me dislike Mac. Now I use free UNIX based kernels that imo work better & gives more freedom than Mac's Unix based kernels that cost a lot of money and only legally run on Mac's hardware.
Maybe they've changed since then but I am still a bit irritated when I think about my $1,200 paperweight. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Ubuntu OSX: http://maketecheasier.com/turn-your-ubuntu-hardy-to-mac-osx-leopard/2008/07/23 & You wont find Compiz Fusion on Mac OSX ;) ______________________________________________________________________ Aside from my experience, my sister recently got a mac & loves it

I believe I have a couple hidden mini-Linux systems on my laptops as there is a way to boot and play music or DVDs without having the O/S completely boot. That could be your disc drive, I know that older cd drives had a play button on them because you could hit that play button and get a music cd playing even while an os wasn't loaded.

I use mostly Windows 7 now since it has some really cool debugging tools for .Net. I also have Windows XP Home SP2 installed on a second partition which only really gets used when I'm doing compatibility testing, and also Fedora 10 which I haven't used in awhile since I've been focusing more on Direct X components of my game engine.

| What operating system are you using? Posted: 6/28/2009 5:50:34 PM | XP SP3 on 4 machines on my network ,various distos of Linux on the.. here we go:
Machine 1: XP Pro SP3,Debian,DSL,Xubuntu
Machine 2:XP Pro SP3,Xubuntu,98SE
Machine 3: XP Pro SP3,ReactOS (testing),Xubuntu
Machine 4:XP Pro SP3,Xubuntu
On the machines NOT networked I have:
DOS 3.0,DOS 5.0,WIN 3.0,Win 3.1,WfW 3.11,DOS 6.22, 95,98,98SE,Puppy Linux,DSL, and some seriously stripped down versions of 98 and XP
I've collected a lot of orphaned and unwanted computers and usually it is just a matter of someone bought a new system and didnt know what to do with the old one. I clean them up and upgrade them, while trying to keep the original OS intact just for the geek factor and then see what I can find to run on them..I call it a hobby, some call it an obsession.

Try Windows XP 64bit, you think Vista is unstable as hell? Try their first attempt, it almost puts Windows ME to shame.
