You need to do the following if you are getting that issue...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929777/en-us

- Install the patch (which is rolled up into Service Pack 1)

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/246072-30-vista-shows

-- Enable memory remapping in your BIOS.

Bam, problem solved.

When I first installed windows vista 64 bit, it was unstable, but once you install service pack 1, it fixes a lot of your issues with instability.

I've got 4 systems right now:

Dell Dimension 2400 w/ 1.5GB ram and P4 2.5ghz running Ubuntu 9.04. Sole purpose is basically NAS-like functions, although it is a usable desktop system and does commonly get used to convert media from one format to another since it's faster and doesn't tie up whatever I'm using. Has a Windows XP SP3 partition on it, but I rarely boot that. Has integrated i845 graphics which are incapable of playing anything and Ubuntu support is broken...so no compiz and no AGP slot (and I'm too lazy/incapable of adding one)

Compaq Presario V5000 laptop. I upgraded this POS someone gave me from the 256MB ram and Sempron 3300+ (2ghz clock, 128k L2 Cache) to 2GB ram (that's all it'll support) and a Turion 64 ML-37 2ghz/1Mb L2 cache (yes people...you can upgrade laptop processors). Dual boot Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP SP3, both 32-bit since the 64-bit upgrade happened only a week ago. Plan on reinstalling Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit and installing Win7 64-bit Beta. I previously ran W7x64 on my now dead Acer Aspire and it ran like a dream....it quickly replaced XP for everything. System mostly stays in Windows XP because I game and my audio hardware doesn't support Linux (at all). Major confusion over what exact northbridge this thing has...laptop specs state a Radeon Xpress 200M but CPUID detects it as a standard RadeonXpress 200 based on hardware ID's. Various specs claim the chip I've got is only a 300mhz GPU core (basically an X300 core), but some programs claim it's a 400mhz core, which is only on the 200M. It plays Sims 2 and GTA:San Andreas to an acceptable level which is really all I play.

Homebrew POS tower. This was a quick-n-dirty PC I built when I found I was having house guests and didn't want them screwing with my other systems. MicroATX PCChips mobo with 2GB ram and some 700mhz Via CPU they tout as a 2000, which is soldered to the board...very unupgradable system, but you can't expect much for $52. Runs Windows XP SP3 and serves as both the guest PC and print-server.

Apple iMac G3 DV Edition. I can't remember if this is a 350 or 400mhz G3...or even if it's the 700mhz chip. It doesn't do anything...it sits in the corner as I don't have any PC100 ram for it. Was running Ubuntu 7.something and was mostly just a toy and spent 99% of the 3 years it was powered on running Folding@home or some other distributed computing thing...was also really handy for Python development cuz, at the time, the Python libs in x86 were slow and memory intensive.

I do want to chime in on the ram issue with 32-bit OSs. A 32-bit OS can only access 4gb ram...we know this. Physical Address Extension is really unsupported and buggy. You can throw all the patches and BIOS tweaks at it in the world...it's not going to perform as well with upper memory as a native 64-bit OS, not to mention more and more the BIOS systems are locking users out from those kind of features, the BIGGEST problem is with onboard video that doesn't have dedicated ram. the addressing required to give the video card a chunk of memory, if on a badly implmented system, will RUIN the amount of ram. my old laptop had 4GB of DDR2 and in a 32-bit OS, with 64MB VRAM assigned I only got just over 2.9 gigs. 128MB VRam gave me 2.5 and 256 dropped it to 2.25...so it was essentially taking almost double the ram (generally more). It was all bad address implmentation and there wasn't anything that could be done except running a 64-bit OS. memtest86 would crash video when attempting to probe the PAE segments...confirming this. I've noticed this on several laptops and some cheaper desktops. The one time I got a 32-bit OS to use PAE and address at least 6 gigs of ram...the stability went to crap after breaking the 3.2 gig barrier and would generally crash or cause blue-screens where as a 64-bit OS could use the entire 12 gigs in the system without hiccuping at all.

Then you have a hardware issue (most likely motherboard related), or a pebkac issue, one of the two.

i have also heard that from the one of the the geek squad guys at best buy who mentioned that vista only says it supports up 8 or whatever gigs when it actually doesn't its only detects it since too many people complained about and they "tried" to fix that issue with SP1 for vista.....

Then the person at the so called "geek squad" is misinformed, and as usual, best buy's "geek squad" is giving false information...

Vista 32 only supports up to 3GB of memory, I have 4 in my system and tried Vista 32 for a lil while to familiarize myself with the layout in prep for Win 7, it never recognized more than 3GB.

--

If your relying on "Geek Squad" to test and diagnose your PC, I think you need to find a different tech place, something like a local computer shop. Most of the PCs I fix are damage control from what the "Geek Squad" did to them, stories almost always the same "I asked for X and they wiped everything and stuck in the recovery disk". That's like cutting a chunk out of your face to get rid of a pimple.

On 32bit, you get just under 3 1/2 out of 4GB. The rest is used for other stuff (video, etc.)

LOL, I know that feeling all too well. I've had hundreds of people come to me after the geek squad screwed them out of their money.

The sad thing is, only the supervisor and the in-home agents are required to be certified, and that is only an a+ certification requirement. This is done so they can get labor for cheap, but you've seen the end result.

If you happen to find someone with certifications beyond a+ in there, chances are they are using best buy for the discount (5% above cost is no joke) and have some other job, if they aren't, they are really stupid because they could be making double if not triple at another company or hell, even if they start their own business.

Taking you computer to the geek squad is like taking your old dog to be put to sleep. You don't want to do it, it costs too much, and the pain will last forever after.

i don't rely on any1(i just overheard them bullshiting another customer in upgrading their pc lol while trying to return something) besides myself my hands and my mistakes so...and i've build over 15 pc's so far for friends family's and few gaming rigs for sale and never used more then 4 gigs but for mine i decide to put it 8gig...why? i dont know not yet lol, all i can say in xp and vista 32bit it always came up as 3.2 gig and in 64bit vista it came up as 7.6gig or so but under heaviest load it didn't go higher then 3.2 gig usage with sp1 installed so and everything was configured properly so i say they just made vista to detect right ammount of ram but it doesn't use it to full capacity.

I briefly taught some audio classes in a lab with all Macs....I made 'em buy PCs.

If you're not getting more than 3.2GB in a 64-bit OS with more than 4GB ram...you've got a serious issue with your BIOS. I don't care if it's a gaming system..I've seen people screw up gaming systems.

Vista misreports the amount of RAM in the System information...you need soemthing that'll report the actual physical ram available.

If you're getting all 8 gigs or however amount you have...but you never use more than 3.something, then that's all you're using. I had 4 gigs in Win7 and it rarely used more than 2.8 with everything open.

That's what I was trying to say, when I tested it with Everest
I could not get my ram usage higher then about 3.1 gigs under haviest
load, burning a a dvd while running few games on 2 screens and running
a video stress test at the same time but it did showed up 7.6 gigs of total ram
But anyway we were talking about OS here some how we end up talking about my ram lol.

The only time I ever saw win7 use more than 3.4gb ram on a system with 8 gigs in it was when we started running server applications and virtual machines.

I'm using Windows 7 RC1 right now and I love it. Windows 7 RC1 is more stable then even Vista SP2 and Windows 7 isn't even gold yet. That just shows you how badly Microsoft screwed up with Vista when an RC is more stable than an OS that's been out for 2 1/2 years with two service packs under its belt. Windows 7 is truly a breath of fresh air compared to Vista. Imo it's soo worth the upgrade from Vista once it turns Gold and is officially released to the public at the end of Oct.

Even if the OS is 64-bit, that doesn't magically give all your programs more memory. A lot of programs are still 32-bit only (games typically fall into that category), and so still only have the ability to address 3GB of RAM. In order to access the higher RAM, you need to actually be running 64-bit programs.

This might (should) work: install 64bit virtual pc, and create a few virtual machines, use 2GB or so each for memory. If you run all of them at once, it should be able to assign each one memory past the 3GB boundary, and show up as using a lot more of your RAM.

Also, easy way to check for 32-bit processes is in task manager - they have a *32 after the process name on an x64 system.

In regards to some people only seeing 3.2gb of ram in Windows 64bit and if you have 4 or more gb of ram, then you may have to go into your Bios and enable "memory remapping".

Enter the BIOS Setup Utility (reboot and press Del key).
Choose Advanced Chipset Feature, then DRAM Configuration
Change “S/W memory hole Remapping” to Enabled
Change “H/W memory hole Remapping” to Enabled

http://www.chinhdo.com/20071114/vista-epox-4gb-issue/

This method worked flawlessly on a Core 2 Duo system I was working on some time back with an Intel p35 motherboard that had more then 4gb of ram installed running a 64bit OS. On a lot of motherboards these settings are disabled by defualt.

I bought a small Sun Rack from a company that was closing down with 2 V490s and 1 T1000 and 1 T2000 SPARC servers. I am running Solaris 10 on the rack.

My other Dell rack is running VMWare vSphere 4 running a lot of different stuff from Centos to Vista.

My desktop is pretty recent with an i7 920 and 12 GB DDR3 running Vista x64

My laptop is little older with Vista 32 Home

My media server is running Ubuntu/Myth TV

I also have two Cisco NAS units which run on customized Linux installs.
