so unless I need to do 3d graphics again -I'll probably stick with Ubuntu
What did you use for that? I tried OSX for a while but when to Windows because the Quadro card I had didnt have app tuned 3D CAD drivers for OSX
|
| What operating system are you using? Posted: 9/9/2009 10:12:52 AM | That's odd, I use (pretty cheap) Nvidia cards, and the Quadro is an nvidia card -it's weird that OSX didn't support it. As far as I'm able to tell the hardware drivers Nvidia provides Linux, Solaris, and BSD work pretty well.
What I was talking about was 3d modeling programs; specifically bryce, poser and daz3d; none of those work that well under Linux.

| What operating system are you using? Posted: 9/9/2009 10:36:18 AM | Quadro drivers wernt a problem, the application spercific drivers were...
I could get the card working fine in OSX using the nVidia Drivers, but no application acceleration makes it slower, OSX isnt good for 3D modelling in my experiences

| What operating system are you using? Posted: 9/26/2009 4:27:00 AM | Just installed the new opensolaris on my laptop and very happy I did...extremely fast and a slick new ui (gnome). My new favorite OS....until i run into issues, lol. So far it fits nicely and I've been wanting to check out the virtualization running on opensolaris:
Virtualization in OpenSolaris http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/virtualization_in_opensolaris
Recently there’s been a lot of news about OpenSolaris, more specifically in reference to the great progress made by virtualization technologies in it. In this article, I will exam some of these technologies, and compare them with the state of the art on other platforms.
Zones OpenSolaris’ Zones is a mechanism that provides isolated environments with a subset of the host operating system’s privileges, allowing applications to run within the zone without any modifications (Xen is also capable of this). This makes zones useful for server consolidation, load balancing and much more. (more at site)...

You need a program that can access your camera and that can capture an image.
ArcSoft VideoImpression can do this, but I dont know if it is free

RC1 here, was using it last night and it won't burn CDs now...not sure if I've tried burning CD/DVDs with Win7 before last night but now it doesn't. It's not my primary OS but every time I use it it seems like something new goes wrong/won't work. I'm restoring Vista today...I think I've tested enough for Microsoft to hold me for a while. When it's 'stable', I'll get a licensed copy through my school for $10

| What operating system are you using? Posted: 9/29/2009 8:47:02 PM | I run a stripped and hacked down version of XP Pro/SP2 that is only 184mb on the .iso and installs with only about a 570mb footprint on C:\
It boots with less than 100mb memory usage, shuts down in less than 5 seconds, and is easily the MOST STABLE windows platform I have ever ran. It works wonders on older PIII/P4 boxes and flat out screams on a dual core! I have installed this on dozens of boxes, it just works what can I say? Funny how the more Microsoft you remove from a lot of this stuff, the better it works...
I'm waiting to see some gutted W7 isos and see how they work. I find the RTM very bloated. I liked the first public beta, it was fast and fun, but the RC was a slug and so is RTM.

Have you tried XP Embedded [aka XPe]?

| What operating system are you using? Posted: 10/1/2009 5:51:26 PM | That's similar to the XP I use, which is created/stripped down/slipstreamed by using nLite.
There are also numerous "Live" CDs that allow you to boot and run XP without installing it, they create a ramdrive and run from that. Those are great for repairing an installed OS, deleting corrupt files which XP, Linux, Knoppix, DOS cannot delete, repairing hosed partition tables, virus scanning, tons of things they are good for.

I prefer the OPK to make a custom installation myself, that or simply slipstream in the updates in a CLI
It can all be done using the tools built into the installation routine http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/18/ Official Technet site version of that article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc977168.aspx

| What operating system are you using? Posted: 10/3/2009 2:34:33 PM | I posted on this thread....a while ago...but to catch the new people up to speed...I have two OS's on my laptop:
Ubuntu x64 XP Pro 32-bit
everyone here talks about stability...and this...and that....here's a few snippits of information from the xp systeminfo command:
<div class="quote">C:\Documents and Settings\Jay>systeminfo
Host Name: JAY-LAPTOP OS Name: Microsoft Windows XP Professional OS Version: 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600 OS Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation OS Configuration: Standalone Workstation OS Build Type: Uniprocessor Free Original Install Date: 6/2/2009, 7 51 PM System Up Time: 29 Days, 16 Hours, 6 Minutes, 25 Seconds System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard System Model: Presario V5000 (RG324UA#ABA) System type: X86-based PC Processor(s): 1 Processor(s) Installed. [01]: x86 Family 15 Model 36 Stepping 2 AuthenticAMD ~1595 Mhz BIOS Version: PTLTD - 6040000 Total Physical Memory: 1,918 MB Available Physical Memory: 894 MB Virtual Memory: Max Size: 2,048 MB Virtual Memory: Available: 2,008 MB Virtual Memory: In Use: 40 MB Page File Location(s): H:\pagefile.sys
if anything, the 29 days should talk about the stability XP has. my laptop however has gone in to hibernation mode about 5 times for a total of about 12 hours during that 29 days....it is still, in theory....the same windows session. I got this laptop on sometime in late May and did have to go through a couple of Windows installtions to get one that worked worth a crap. I tried to slipstream and customize my own....but that never worked well. I wound up doing it the hard way of installing service packs manually, but it's easy to get the network redistributable for those. I should also add it's been infected by various spyware slipping through IE....but it's not given me a bit of a problem. I haven't had a need to reboot it. i know a lot of people know how stable XP is, i'm just saying this for those that need a tad more convincing. ram usage is in line with what I'm running...and the page file location currently doesn't exist...and it's said 40MB for the last month....so I've not had a pagefile for a while and I don't think there's any valid are for windows to have any virtual memory.
I used win7 on this laptop, and it was very stable....running as well at the end of the week as it did when i booted...but this system just isn't quite powerful enough to run a full win7 install. I haven't tried tuning the graphics down as I needed the partition for extra space...plus triple booting is a difficult thing to deal with.
Ubuntu well..is Ubuntu. Very fast, stable..cool looking. It just so happens that I haven't been doing any strictly "day to day" computing in it because I'm constantly doing stuff that requires Windows....but it's been running about as stable for about the same length of time.

Check in the control panel/Scanners and Cameras, if you haven't added any software for it you can usually still access it from there...
If you dont see the scanners and cameras in control panel, look for a link to switch to 'classic view'....

Thanks HO2 , That article is pretty interesting. I think it's great that vendors are offering a choice now, maybe MS will realize that people won't keep playing the 'upgrade treadmill' game when they have options. So maybe MS will come down on prices & cut back on bloat & system requirements...especially in todays market because people/businesses can't afford to keep pouring money into new software because the old software isn't supported (well, not supported for long) & buying new hardware to support the new software.
And about the Win7 64 drivers, I agree....people are still waiting for Vista 64 drivers

I just made an image of my Vista and used the drivers from that file, and any others I found online :)
