Hey y'all,

Up here on the left slope of the northern Rockies staying we get the extremes most nearly every day of the summer. Here we are first week of summer and parts nearby recently had night temps down near freezing over night. This AM I think we were down in the 40's.

When I moved out here couple a decades ago I would regularly be out shoveling snow in shorts and a tee (and boots). Work up enough of a sweat that I would be steaming. Thought it was kewl (vs. cool). Anyway, as I've aged my love affair with the cold has chilled. Lately anything below 50 just doesn't feel pleasant. So when summer rolls around I'm out in my black tee and black shorts in the garden and yard, sucking up as much heat as I can. When temps climb above 90 F I'm right at it. But, the thing is that humidity is often in single digits. It makes the temp comfortable but is does suck the fluids right out of ya.

While I'm looking forward to a move back to my beloved SW Virginny, I am not lookin' forward to the increase in humidity. Out here on the left slope, 105 F in the shade, but no humidity -- t'aint all that bad.

As for shorts, my boy and I are at a disagreement over what is the proper length. His shorts, even when worn appropriately at the waist/hips, hang down to his knees or a bit below -- male capris I tend to wear shorts a bit further away from the knee. And while I tend to give a small nod toward "fashion" I prefer my shorts short! Otherwise, what's the purpose. Showed the boy a picture of Tom Selleck from Magnum PI in his shorts which were the fashion of the day back then and his eyes nearly popped out'a his head. His under shorts are longer than what we wore back then!

Well, hopin' y'all stay cool this year. Maybe if'n we could get all the politicians to stop flappin' their lips for the season this so called global warming would become a thing of the past.

Now I'm wondering why in hell (literally) I waited so long and why I get so hung up on a principle (fresh air is better, air conditioning is for wimps blah blah blah)....honestly, I sometimes drive myself crazy with my silly rules and "principles"...anyway, menopause (aka severe hot flashes/night sweats) made a wimp out of me and now it's crank that mother down and let there be ice baby!!! - oldsoul

I can feel for you, oldsoul . I get those night sweats as well & it's annoying as hell. Also, because I have severe allergies, I do NOT love fresh air, I never have any open windows,
by my specialist's advice. I don't know how we survived all those years before I finally got air-conditioning (5 years now).

As for apparel, I have shorts but I really don't like wearing them, as I have quite heavy thighs. I got some capris this past year & I really like the way they look on me. Unfortunate
problem, I've got 3 pairs (all denim), but they don't come equipped with belt loops. I don't wear a belt, but I use them to anchor the chain I keep my keys on, so they can't get lost.
Haven't found a way around that yet, still figuring.

My room-mate & I have a swimming pool in our building, so that's aother way to combine cool comfort with some needed excercise!
I LVE my new bikini!

I have often wondered, if we lived somewhere that has summer all year round would people loose weight so they could wear heat appropriate clothing. Would they exercise more because they weren't hiding in the house from freezing temps?

Dunno, are there fat people in Hawaii, or Southern California or Florida, to name a few. A lot of people in seasonal climatesw, such as Maine are outside snowmobiling, or ice skating or skiing in the winter. Just a thought

Go to the beach and you will see all sizes, lol

OT, I wear what I'm comfortable, if they don't wanna look, then don't. I can always find fatter or thinner wherever I go,

...Well being from Canada, our summers are relatively short and for the most part my city doesn't often get much over 85 degrees throughout July and August. Cools down at night too, nice for sleeping.

My warm weather attire consists of lots of skirts & sun dresses...they not only provide for lots of air conditioning....they also feel cool and silky against the skin.

Mandrake....I can honestly say I have never experienced swimming totally nude but it does hold a certain appeal haha

Skinny dipping does lose some of its appeal when you have to break the ice first in order to dive in.

I think that's why someone invented the Bahamas.

There is nothing quite like the feeling of swimming in the nude.
It's so freeing...my daughter and I go to a secret spot here on the Mornington Peninsula. It's a cove and no one can see us except the occasional dolphin or seal. Once, my daughter and I were swimming and two dolphins glided past - so close we could stroke and touch them.
I love summer and I don't care about heat. I'll swim in the nude but I still won't wear short-shorts..

Listen, greynomad, I may not be a Yankee, but I know Flipper when I see him.
Are you trying to tell me they weren't really dolphins, but two horny guys in dolphin suits?
But they felt so smooth and fishy...lol..
With my luck, it was probably the crew from Candid Camera.

They might have been couple of NSW dolphins holidaying in the Peninsular,
just there to cool off. Packin' a Kodak, just for the holiday snaps of course.
I'm sure we'll see the exposures in the next issue of the fish & chip paper.

Funny you mention breaking the ice.. My older son does just that to dive through the winter.. I asked him why not just take a trip to an island... I always worry when he is diving in the winter.. He is a rescue diver and dives year round here..

The closest thing I have to short shorts have abou2-3 inches of fabric on each side of the crotch seam... unlike the ones we (or I anyway... LOL) wore back in the day with hardly more than the seam for a crotch. I don't wear those away from home too much other than maybe camping. I have a lil' hail damage on the ol' thighs so I prefer a walking short a few inches above the knee during hot times when I wanna look pulled together. I admit I have the flying squirrel upper arm thing going on but it doesn't deter me from wearing narrow/spaghetti string strap or sleeveless tops. I like showing off my tattoos if the environment is appropriate. I'm not too much into hats anymore but I do have an old beat up straw cowgirl hat (though it's so beat it is difficult to determine the original shape) I like to wear in the yard or while camping/fishing. For keeping cool in the heat my greatests friends are applying powder liberally and wet bandanas tied around my head or neck. I like to mist down a lil' with water too.

I have never had the nerve to try that, probably never would. I am pretty old-fashioned.

I had to laugh , when I was buying my new bikini, this one saleswoman at Zellers was showing me how they now have onepiece bathing suits
with a built-in girdle/panel, made of Spandex. Yuck! But then again, I hate one pieces anyway, so I am probably not very objective on the subject.

^^^ Ah man! You gotta try swimming in the nude! A friend's private pool, no audience or all female. It feels great! But be sure to put plenty of sunscreen on 'the twins.' I can laugh NOW, but sunburned t*ts are no laughing matter... and definitely don't get in a hot tub afterwards.

I will wear shorts around the house, but wearing a leg brace makes me not so keen on being seen in public in them.

As far as keeping cool at my age, I drink lots of water and wear only linen or cotton. Rely on large oscillating fans to circulate the air in my home as I find the high electric bills prohibitive re running an air conditioner. The humidity here is really, really bad in the summer months, so the cooler I can keep myself when at home the better.

Oh my gosh... if you ever have any chance to do it, do not hesitate!
Well, let me change that... if you ever have any non-threatening chance to do it, do not hesitate!
Use screeching brakes, not just hesitation, if someone you dislike is in the water slobbering and rubbing his crotch, saying "yeah baby, take it off and jump on in".

Got you all beat!!!!!! 113 yesterday, (NO KIDDING) and it`s cooled down to a balmy 107 this afternoon. SoCal desert-part time home. I make myself get used to the heat.
I wake up 4:45 A.M. and am out by 5:30 for a 5 mile walk as the sun comes up. Then it is only usually in the 80`s. Do early morning errands, groceries , yard work, then stay indoors mid day to sundown. Mid day siesta indoors. After sundown and after it has broken 100, maybe another short walk, then bed early to beat the heat tomorrow. Lots of water, I live in loose fitting cotton clothes ( mainly sundresses and little tiny tops) No shorts for me-always lightweight capris. Almost no women wear short shorts here, just not in vogue at all. But you do get used to it. 100 feels fine to desert rats once your blood has thinned out. I make myself take short walks and work in over 100 outside just to toughen up and stay used to it, and don`t overdo it on the air. Too much temp change is worse than too hot.

Watch the heavy food and booze and gets lots of exercise, stay thin as possible to feel well in this heat.

Don't forget a lil' solid deodorant on the inside of the thighs is great to prevent chafing when wearing dresses or short shorts!
I've been wearing jeans/slacks quite a bit this year and my legs are white compared to my arms. I had to attend two funerals last week, didn't want to wear hose, and am afraid of those self-tanning products but haven't tried any in about 20 years. But what choice did I have? I have to say Nivea Sun-Kissed Beautiful Legs is the freakin bomb!

oh, i thought you said "beating the meat at our age... never mind...

i think short shorts are considered work attire for all the ladies down on K street. you washington dc-ers know what i mean. other than that, i'm pretty sure they're out of style except for those aspiring to K street-style business.

i like to skinny-dip in the pool or sit in my basement family room which is never warmer than 70 degrees. working out of my home means i can do either one of those or even both any day of the week. so i guess the answer is that i'm either naked, or i'm dressed (conservatively). none of this slutty in-between shite!

Bet it didn't hurt as much as your tattoo! ROFLMFAO! That reminds me of something very funny that happened to me 27 years ago, when I was
dating my oldest son's father. He went to Wreck Beach (Vancouver's nude beach) & I was angry about. I said (because I saw them packing
beer), "I hope you fall asleep on your back." He did, got a nasty sunburn on his d*ck, no sex for 2 weeks! ROFLMFAO!!

My answer is no.. It comes down to calories in and calories out... Also how much fiber you are intaking since fiber helps move things along and is not digested..

You could spike your food a little with some hot sauce it will be just as good as being out in the heat as far as sweating goes... lol

Great thread, enjoyed reading all the stories. Remembrance of skinny dipping : blush, smile:
If you are serious about beating the heat though, I have some good advice. A summer diet of fruits and salad. Our bodies create heat when processing food. Fats and proteins take a lot of work to digest so your body is generating more heat. Citrus fruit in particular actually helps cool the body at the same time as providing sugar for energy. Greek salad is a staple for me in summer. Oh and guess what there is an added bonus (learned from a friend who worked as a tree thinner) If you eat enough citrus fruit the mosquitoes will avoid you as well. And then there is beer! Alcohol lowers the body temperature. I love summer.

Wow Motown Cowgirl, I'm out of date. Thought they cleaned up K st. Long since. Been in FLA too long I guess.

You could always take a dip in the reflecting pool on the mall.

hi, there ... I live in the Mojave desert and would not be able to make it without "shorts"! we have shorts weather here eight to 10 months of the year! I used to only wear stretchy-type "bike" shorts. then I started working out, changing my diet and generally taking much better care of myself. a friend bought me a pair of denim jeans-type shorts and I've been wearing them ever since!

I how save my stretchy ones for the gym. I have more fun and am much cooler - all year long!

Mae, I think I will have to move north of the border it seems. I am origionally from England where the summers consist of mostly cool, damp and grey days. I have lived in Florida for almost 15 years, I still cannot deal with the excessive heat and humidity day and night for at least 6 months out of the year. I would be very happy to hibernate during the summer months, and resurface in the fall, that would make me a very happy camper and make my hot flashes a little easier to deal with, that way I don't have to put my head in the freezer to cool down!!

I often have to ask myself why the heck am I still living in Florida????

But my days of shorty-shorts are behind me. I'm officially too old for Daisy Dukes.

I recently got accused of wearing Daisy Dukes at the Sarasota event. I never even heard of Daisy Dukes and I refute that what I wear, although short shorts, are Daisy Dukes. I don't let my azz hang out... but I'm guilty of wearing short shorts and camisole tops every weekend of the summer when it's hot out, even with AC. It's too damned hot and I like to get some tan on me so when I walk the dog, etc., I get a little Vitamin D too. Yea, I know, I'm too old, but I have very short legs. (My usual weekend costume is the pic of me with Jax the dolphin.)

I also have started getting hot flashes and I throw the covers off at night and always keep water handy. I also just spent a lot of money on flourescent lighting, the vanity bulbs in my bathroom emit so much heat. I ended up buying a bunch of them for different rooms.
