I have noticed that for some reason woman with long beautiful hair seem to be harder to get close to.

( I couldn't help it... I just HAD to fix your "ong hair"... Scuse the Virgo in me OP)

I have to say that it never fails to amuse me how many "reasons" humans can come up with as to why some people are hard to get close to. On these forums alone, I am sure we could find threads about people with short arms being hard to get close to (even tho' one would think with short arms they would be easier...) or people with bushy eyebrows being more jealous thus more aloof... The reality is OP that there's many a kindly, loving spirit topped off by a wild mane of hair.

I do think that women will choose their hair length and style according to their own lifestyle and what they want to "say" about themselves. A busy career woman/mom might opt for a shorter style because she NEEDS to be able to wash and go. That same woman, experienced in the handling of her long hair might choose to keep it long but also keep it up and out of the way...

I don't think a woman's hair length has anything whatsoever to do with her approachability. But I do find it amusing that so many people would just love to know if there's any way at all to figure out which women are more likely to respond to a message of interest. I have long curly hair and I always respond to my messages.

P.S. I hope you're keeping a list so that you can publish the results of your poll... It will keep you from getting beat up by the Pink Panther Division AGAIN.

Touchdown wonders why it is that older women seem to cut their shorter . . .

Because, in some cases at least, hair changes with age. The ends get dried out faster, the grey ones come and even though they grow from the same follicle that used to grow a brown one, say, the hair is coarser and maybe curlier. And those grey ones can be very uncooperative, unruly, impervious to a battery of styling products and techniques.

Or maybe we just lose patience with hair products, blow drying, straightening, curling, bobby pins, yada yada yada. I would assume that younger women get more emails, on average also. I reply even though my hair is longer.

I have to say that the length of my beautiful hair whether long and flowing or cropped tight and high has nothing to do with my attitude or my self confidence. Additionally? The length of my hair MAY attract some or not attract others but I really do not care much at all - it is after all my hair.

Whether men love it or not, really doesn't make any difference to me.

Conducted by women with short hair? What is the basis for the claim?

I just like women :-) By the way, Ms. Ritawayward - I thought the pic of you on your profile withe the short hair was the best one - you look very sexy in that pic - and I mean that in a positive way.

I have long hair. While I am selective, my “pickiness” is limited to desiring a mate who understands simple scientific concepts, such as correlation does not imply causation.

Will you apologize to show your fellow POF posters you are a sweet person?

If I were a sweet person, I would.

but why is it that the older a woman gets, the shorter she cuts her hair? It feels like after the age of 50 women are genetically driven to get man-haircuts,

I have told this story several times in other forums, but here it is again (sorry to bore everyone): when I turned 40, my sister told me that I needed to cut my then waist length hair. When I asked her , "Why?" she told me because older women just don't "look good" with long hair.

I had long known/witnessed that few older women in modern times have long hair; in the past, when it was unacceptable for women to cut their hair, they wore it up in a bun.

The history of long hair is a long one, and women have been exhorted for centuries to cover their hair for several reasons. Christian women were/are told to cover their hair when they pray and to keep it covered because "of the angels" (1 Corinthians 11:10). This last verse has never been explained satisfactorily, but to cut one's hair is a shame and to cover the hair is a sign of submission. We still see this in religious sects.

But one the main reason hair was supposed to be covered is because it is explicitly connected to sexuality. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, men claimed to be driven to uncontrollable acts of lust just by seeing a woman's hair! Young girls were allowed to wear their hair down, but once they married, it was to be up in a bun to show that they were committed to a man and to keep other men from having that uncontrollable lust. Hair was for the husband.

What does this have to do with older women cutting their hair in modern times? Simple. When the prime purpose of sex was to procreate, women were allowed to be sexual and let their "hair down" with their husbands, but when they reached the point in life where they were not going to procreate, they needed to curb their sexuality, and one way of showing that is to cut the hair short.

This is not my theory, but I buy into it. Even though my sister didn't "know" the reason why I should cut my hair, she still "knew" that I should cut it. As people can see, I took her well meant advice. (Snort.)

I have my own theories about why the new uniform of women my age and older include a short, spiked cut. I see this more and more. I will not, however, go into it because I don't want to offend anyone who might wear that "do," but it is a move away from the feminizing perm (which makes me go "ugh") while keeping the standards of the past.

I did not intend to lump all older women into that short-hair category, my bad.

"Well...maybe SOME do. I'm 51."

And, you look great!

Princess of Magic: thanks for the post. As a guy, I spend about three minutes a day on my hair. I can only imagine how much work it could be. And, of course, some women can be very desirable with that short haircut as well.

conducted by Laurie Pawlik-Kienlen.

I googled Ms. Pawlik-Kienlen and found:

Women who are over 40 years old and wear their hair long may not resist growing up. Dimitrius writes, “Sometimes women with this trait are caught in a time warp and still think of themselves as teenagers or college students rather than as grown-ups. Such women may be fairly unrealistic in their outlook on life as well as in their perception of themselves.”

Women who have long hair may believe it makes them more sexually appealing. Long hair could also reveal a bohemian spirit or freedom from conventional expectations.

I didn't see anything about women with long hair having insecurity problems, but the article did say:

“Spending a significant percentage of one’s income on hair – or any other aspect of personal appearance – suggests vanity, a need for acceptance, concern about others’ perceptions, and possibly insecurity, ” writes Dimitrius in Reading People.

Also, Pawlik-Kienlin does NOT appear to have done the study because she is quoting other people's research (Dimitrius) and what they said. Also, she says her degrees are from certain schools, but she doesn't list her credentials, so I assume she does not have a PhD. Since she doesn't speak of Dimitrius, I have no idea who he is.

Did you have a more in-depth study supporting your claim that I can peruse ?

I have short hair with long fringe, I cannot express how many positive messages I get on my hair and the vast majority of males really love it. I feel more confident with my hair short and it suits my personality. I am very outgoing and I have no problem rocking out the fashion colors, and get swamped at the mall amongst other places for example being asked how my hair is cut and what I use to achieve the color. At that, I just hand them my card and smile.

I have lost track, but I assume that you are the person who made the claim that a study shows women with long hair are insecure--if everyone has his/her own view, why did you bother to bring it up?

As for proving your point: I really was curious as to the reasoning behind women with long hair being insecure.

Many long years ago, when I was first married, I had hair nearly to my knees. After having my first child, I no longer had time to fuss with that much hair. I had it cut to my waist. After my second child, I definitely didn't have time for hair. I put up with it as long as I could because my (then) hubby loved it. I kept mentioning getting it cut but he kept begging me not to. I finally told him that if he wanted me to have long hair, it would be his responsibility to wash it, comb it, dry it, and braid it to keep it out of my way. He was thrilled with idea of "playing" with my hair.

Having my own personal stylist lasted for about 4 days. He then told me to get it cut if I wanted. The stylist cut a 37-inch ponytail before she even started cutting it short, the way I wanted it. When we got done, my hair was an inch long all over my head. I was in heaven!

As for long-haired women being more insecure or high maintenance than those with short hair? I don't believe it. Yes, SOME women with long hair play the "hair card" to attract attention. But, as usual, not all of us with long hair are like that. SOME women with short hair are also high maintenance.

If any man in my life tells me I'm "not allowed" to cut my hair the way I want it, he will become my personal stylist. That never lasts long. I don't dictate how the man in my life will wear his hair, so I expect the same in return. It's one thing to want to do something just to please your SO. It's another thing entirely to demand your SO do something (no matter how troublesome on a regular basis it is) just to make you happy. And if some of you men have never had long hair of your own, try it. You'll find out that long hair is a lot more than just pretty and sexy.

Hair is not a deal breaker for me. I can see the beauty in all kinds of hair styles. Maybe I might prefer or find more attractive certain styles, but that is situational.

But I don't let it influence whether I email someone, and if anything I think I have more responses from medium and long haired contacts.

I am finding that my hair length is more of an issue than theirs. I see quite a few ladies that prefer short hair and neatly grooomed.

:)

I will say the one "hair rejection" email I got was very kind and we have actually corresponded as friends anyway.

Gosh, I looked, did you post the study? I didn't see it. What point did Gwen prove, that there isn't any documented study that accurately reflects that women that wear their hair long are any less secure than those that are bald or have short hair? I do think my informal life study has proven to me that those that are humans are secure or insecure. It has nothing to do with how they wear their hair or makeup; however, clothing sometimes indicates their security. A woman that will not wear a bathing suit on the beach is not secure with her body or is allergic to the sun. A man that will not take off his tee shirt or wear a bathing suit on the beach is also insecure with his body or is allergic to the sun.

Now if you do have an actual study that reflects dates, names, study group information, etc., I would love to take a look. But don't expect not to be called on BS on these threads trying to make up studies that don't exist or making inaccurate conclusions from studies. Of course any survey is flawed and I discount them totally. Surveys are not done scientifically and I could care less about their inaccuracies. IE huge difference between a scientific study and survey.

Boy now I have heard every reason why women don't respond to messages....
I have hair almost to my waist which does not prevent me from answering the few messages I get. Hair has really nothing to do with getting more messages then short haired women, except the occasional where guys want to do weird things with with the long hair but I even answer those.
I have seen some short haired women that I think look fantastic with it...wish I would but I'll just stay the long haired pumkin that I am.
Long haired women being higher maintenance? I beg to differ, when I had short hair I had to get it cut every 2 weeks, use a ton of styling products....now my long hair is pretty much shampoo, conditioner, little drying and off I am, a lot lower maintenance and cheaper too.
I have to admit though that only women seem to think I should cut it at my 'advanced age'.

Maybe we could braid it into a tail...

OP, I have medium length hair, so does that make me mediocre, half-way high maintenance, somewhere in the middle, or someone who finds it ridiculous that money is wasted on such silly researches? How is such research going to better humanity? Do people have nothing else to do?

I notice long beautiful hair on women too, it is a thing of wonder...because most long hair looks like thin, broken crap but hey it's long so that's all that matters. But it's true, guys don't seem to care what it looks or smells like (long hair is not as easy to wash and the ends dry out too easily) as long as it's long, many men are happy. A lot of women look so much better with medium to short hair but are scared chitless to cut it or even get it styled for fear men won't think they are feminine. I love long beautiful hair to look at just like many others but long hair just to have long hair but not have it look good, blech. Only a personal opinion of course. My hair I hardly have any hair, I'm lucky to have enough for short hair, if a man is needing lots of hair on a woman to be attracted, I'm not his type.

I think he should shave a landing strip down there. Don't think many guys have tried that one yet. Dare to be different!

Viperess and Carolann both have short hair and it looks good. I was more talking about the Rue McClanahan style vs. the Mona

I have long hair and I don't get a lot of emails. What makes me neglect to respond to an email is the sender's inability to string together a sentence or a lame come on when contacting me. Also those who looked at my pic but didn't actually READ my profile as is evidenced by our obvious incompatibility according to our profiles. However, I do notice in the real world that if I wear my hair down I get a lot of second looks. If it's up or in a pony tail I don't get noticed as much.
