| Long vs short hair Posted: 8/14/2009 9:17:58 AM | Not to get too off-topic, but why is it that the older a woman gets, the shorter she cuts her hair? Yeah, I wonder that too. I'd never cut my hair just to look 'proper' for my age. It gets to grow as long as it wants to, and I can always pin it up. I don't like short hair on me at all. I feel frumpy.
I'm one of those older women where the hair kept getting shorter and shorter. My hair used to be straight and halfway down my back. The colour also used to be brown naturally. While some older women can easily pull off longer hair, some of us look like idiots and haggard with the long hair. As the face falls, the long hair emphasizes it. At this stage, I need all the help I can get without injections or knives being involved.

| Long vs short hair Posted: 8/14/2009 9:21:25 AM | Hairdressers are the "experts" and if you don't take their advice, that's ok
"experts" is a bit strong....not all are "experts" in their field....if they were, they'd know enough to ask you what it is you want...offer their "expert" advice....and then give you what you (the paying customer) wants!!! Instead, with my personal experience as well as others here, the "experts" give you what they want...
Lol...and i've had them say in the process..."ohh I wish I could have long thick hair like yours"...as they continue to hack away at it...lol
As far as split ends go...doesn't matter how long or short your hair is...you can have them...and hairdressers seem to always use that as an excuse to chop your hair off or sell worthless products... hmmm...guess we should all be bald to avoid this "epidemic"...lol

It's why I cut my own hair. I'd sooner pay nothing to look goofy than pay someone else to make me look that way. =============
Having had both very long hair and short hair, are you saying the older I got the less care I take of myself?? Actually, it can take a lot more work to deal with short striaght hair to get it to do what you want than it can the long straight hair. Length of hair has nothing to do with the care one takes with one's self. That would be like saying all bald guys are pigs in the care department. vvvvvvv

Hairdressers are the "experts" and if you don't take their advice, that's ok and 99% are gay..nice way to take advices about attracting a gender from someone who doesn't even desire your gender! Just wanted to slide in that as a joke...maybe.
Not stating anything here, but is it possible that the extra care that long hair requires make the women pay more attention to her personal care, appearance and femininity and that what men somehow sens?

| Long vs short hair Posted: 8/14/2009 9:48:50 AM | My thick, tangled mop is a hairstylist's nightmare. No matter what I do to it, it generally looks like I have bowling ball head in a few weeks' time, lol.
My answer is to find a stylist who is an expert on matching facial shape and lifestyle and likes creative challenges - then I sit in the chair, say "do what you think will look good on me" and let them go to town on whatever they like. I love the surprise of it and think I get better cuts from letting them take the lead. After all, if I hate it, it'll grow back in a few weeks. I have had haircuts that were stunning and some that were okay... I bounce from long to short to in between depending on the stylists' whim. Well, recently I've been saying "do whatever you want but keep at least the illusion of length" to pander to my sweetie's proclivities.

| Long vs short hair Posted: 8/14/2009 9:52:24 AM | lol...yeah my hair was to my hips until my mid 30's ...then slowly got shorter and shorter. I am actually growing it back out now , it's easier to deal with..but I won't go past my back. My hairdresser...I love him to death. I haven't figured out for sure if he's gay or not..I don't really care, he's an awesome person. But I'm almost positive that he's not. He has told me 'no' a few times...which is not easy to do , lol..so I really appreciate. He told me no when I wanted to dye my hair black and when I wanted to do bangs a couple of times (though honestly then I just cut them myself, screw them up and go to him to fix...so he now only attempts to dissuade me =) I talked him into letting me go really dark brown...and he kept warning me that I'd have to wear make up and do the more polished look. Damned if he wasn't right. I lasted about 2 or 3 weeks as a brunette. My own little ai experiment ;-) It works out, I'm not really very good with such things so I kind of rely on him. I throw in product and use my car to blow dry my hair...every time he tries to fix it (he flattens it and then curls it and does all kinds of other crap...I just mess it up anyway...). If I really have to, I'll throw in the curlers for a fancy night out.
So the original question...I guess I have medium hair now , a little past the shoulders...and I'm totally approachable and I always return emails, that is just basic common courtesy in my opinion.
I don't know about men liking long hair more vs. short hair...I think some do , some don't. I think short hair is very sexy and sassy..but I seriously don't want to have to spend more than 5 minutes on my hair..and with long I can put it up in braids for karate or running ,etc...in about 2 minutes. And if I want to get all fancy , I can still do so in less than 20 minutes thanks to being able to throw hair up in curlers while I get ready..I suppose I'm just not willing to put forth all the effort that shorter hair requires to look good...and I really suck at it , too...lol..really.

| Long vs short hair Posted: 8/14/2009 9:56:31 AM | Back in the days when networks announced before select shows that they were "IN COLOR" and I still had hair enough to warrant ownership of a comb, I conducted my own little experiment. No, it did not involve a bunch of women crashing a soccer tournament-hosting bar. I grew the hair on the left side of my head really, really long and kept a buzz cut on the other side. Then whenever I had a date, I would only allow her to see one profile or the other.
Still tabulating the results, but let's just say that I remained single a long, long time.

| Long vs short hair Posted: 8/14/2009 10:37:44 AM | Not only does long hair make women sexy, but women (in general) love men with long hair too. Many of them will vehemently deny this, but just watch them swoon over just about any rock star.
I think it keeps people looking young, like a sign of vibrance. Women in their 50's and 60's get old-looking real quick when they cut their hair off... but hey I know it's a lot of work, some people just get tired of the maintenance, or have no time for it.
I think any type of hair can look good when it's long... you just have to do what works for you, whether it's braids, dreadlocks, curls, etc...
Hey, even God thinks long hair is cool.....Samson said to Delilah: “A razor has never come upon my head, because I am a Naz´i·rite of God from my mother’s belly. If I did get shaved, my power also would certainly depart from me, and I should indeed grow weak and become like all other men.” -Judges 16:17.
Personally, I'm never getting another haircut...

| Long vs short hair Posted: 8/14/2009 11:48:15 AM | I am not impressed with my hairstylist lately.
This person is not even my friend, and they still seem to do exactly the opposite of what I want everytime. I'll be sitting there with my hair in hot curlers for hours reading the same magazine I read yesterday keeping up with all of the salon chit chat, and I don't know if it's fear or what- but I will conveniently lose track of what they are doing for just a second- and that's it! The mistake has been made, the damage is done. The rest is now repair. When it is all done I still tip, because when I leave I don't want the whole room staring at me. This usually traumatizes me for a little while and I go into seclusion watching reruns of Cow Island. Lately it just seems one is on a breathing machine, or one came back from the dead, one of them is supposedly having an affair with another one- but that can't be, because she's dead, or they all just wander around the island with guns in their hooves looking for eachother for various reasons, whereupon they all bump into each other at the same trough straightening their clothes and preening.

| Long vs short hair Posted: 8/14/2009 11:52:54 AM | I've only skimmed, here, so, apologies if this has been said...
A number of men have stated that they only like women with long hair. A couple even said they actually won't date someone with short hair.
Fellas - this means you're saying you won't date someone who looks like Rihanna. Now I could see not wanting to date the actual Rihanna, she's made some questionable choices, but someone more together, who looks like that? Of course you would!
Or, for that matter, these usually short-haired beautiful women of assorted ages: Halle Berry, or Annette Bening, or Alyssa Milano, or Kylie Minogue, or Sharon Stone, or Linda Evangelista, or Charlize Theron, or Cameron Diaz...
I mean, come on. Prefer long hair, sure, I get that. But realistically, a deal-breaker it ain't, not all by itself.

| Long vs short hair Posted: 8/14/2009 1:06:04 PM | | I think that many women over 50 lo0k older when they have long hair, it depends on the woman's facial features, attitude, and general appearance. I have short hair, not as short as the bad hair day hair that is depicted in my profile pic, and hair that is longer than my jaw adds years to my face and pounds to my body. | |

Of course they ain't!
but the examples you have given, yurk!! Nope! won't date those!
Gimme Salma Hayek or Catherine Zeta Jones...and you better chain me to the wall!

| Long vs short hair Posted: 8/14/2009 1:21:14 PM | OMG!
Not only does long hair make women sexy, but women (in general) love men with long hair too.
Oh yes, all women LOVE men with long hair! Dude! Thanks for telling all of us WOMEN what we love in a man's hairstyle!
An expert on what women want and think about men's hair? Why or how does this man know that? Perhaps a transgender person? Otherwise? I have no clue.
My own hair cut on POF recently rasied a ruckus. Oh well. It is what it is. My hair.
I love my hair long. I love my hair short. I do with it? What I want. When I had chemo - I chose to shave it, rather than have it fall out on it's own. I loved the look and the feel of it. It made me feel sexy at a time, when it was pretty hard to feel anything but miserable.
I have the ability of being able to look super feminine either way. Which is lovely for me.
My mother prefers it short. My father prefers it long.
I prefer to have someone other than my parents commenting and touching my hair.
But if I have to GROW it OUT or CUT IF OFF just to please a man? That's bullshyt. And I refuse to participate in it.
DBB - I think you're sexy as hell just the way you are. Margo - I think you are too, but? I'm not bi. Common - while your mind stimulates me most of all - you have a lovely head of hair so for you? That's just another fine quality to an already packed house.
If a man has hair longer than I can grow mine? Ick, yuk, and I'm NOT INTO HIM. Samson indeed.

| Long vs short hair Posted: 8/14/2009 1:49:54 PM | | I am pretty sure that most men have it drilled in their minds that longer hair is more "feminine" and more desired. Look at how the media supports this idea. I am one guy that actually likes both short and long hair. There are a lot of drop dead gorgeous women with short hair cuts. I wouldn't ever judge a girl by how long or how short her hair is. A lot have perception that shorter hair is more masculine, and also more aggressive looking. I personally think its a fashion statement and doesn't have anything to do with a person being more or less desirable as a mate. | |

All I have to say about the matter, is the women have no idea they are in competition with men-turned-into-women, many of which have long hair. Vancouver BC is full of em
That's a little 1 sided Ond cold bro'......Did you ever stop & think for a lot of us it is our heritage..... I do respect your opinion , but there is 2 sides to that coin sir.......thank you.

| Long vs short hair Posted: 8/19/2009 6:36:42 AM | There are some woman no matter what age that look just as sexy, sometimes more with a sweeping short cut. It depends on the looks/shape of the face. On the other hand..some bald men are even more attractive than men with hair..once again depends on the looks. Sometimes women in their 50's/60's keep the long locks to "appear" younger. However, it does tend to sometimes make them appear as an older woman trying to just "appear" younger. It totally depends on the persons looks! Men with long hair the same perception-depends on the face....Unkemp hair can be a huge turnoff! | |

| Long vs short hair Posted: 8/19/2009 8:36:33 AM | I think very short hair is hard look for the average women to pull off. I have seen some women who I thought looked great with short hair but, generally speaking, I much prefer long hair on women. I just find long, thin, soft and straight hair to be very beautiful. I know that I can be a lot of maintenance though so I can understand why some women prefer to have it short. (I tried letting mine grow long a few years ago... I really didn't like it either)
Anyway, the only hair that I have ever trully find unattractive on a woman is partially/fully shaved heads. I think there should always be, at the very least, enough hair for me to grab onto.

| Long vs short hair Posted: 8/19/2009 9:06:03 AM | I guess the perfect woman would be fit and trim, long blonde hair, blue-eyed, I guess that counts me out with a lot of men but I am not doing bad for myself. I am overweight, dark brown hair and brown eyes. What I would consider a perfect man a tall 6'2", broad shouldered, some muscles (not like the Hulk), full head of dark brown hair and eye color doesn't matter just as long as the eyes are expressive and sparkle. Personality is more important and financially stable. I have dated the above but that doesn't mean we connect, I can look past some of the flaws and find them more attractive than some of the good looking men. | |
|
| Long vs short hair Posted: 8/19/2009 10:01:22 AM | I think it's all about how it looks on a person. Nothing worse (in my opinion) then seeing long hair hanging down a person's back (male or female) and it's all thin, stringy and 4 inches of split ends. I think sometimes as you get older your hair naturally thins out. I know mine isn't as thick as it used to be and it surely does not grow as fast as it used to. But I found I had to be careful...I was keeping my hair real long and I realized I needed to loose about 8 inches of it to make it even and thick looking again. It's still pretty long by short hair standards, but a lot shorter than it was. It makes no sense to have long hair just to have long hair. I've seen plenty of profile pictures with males and females sporting long hair that seriously needs a trim. I guess I looked in the mirror one day and said...oh yeah. But to each their own. | |
