| Does NASCAR on a thread make you want to date/not date someone? Posted: 9/15/2005 4:02:32 AM | As a long time fan of NASCAR and auto racing in general this subject title was of interest...........
It's laughable that anyone would "reject" someone because of their sports likes BUT I guess in todays somewhat superficial society this isn't all that out of place. For example I automatically click off anyone who's a smoker so I guess I'm part of that shallow minded approach?
Despite the stereotypes about NASCAR fans and drivers being rednecks and drunken welfare-sucking low lifes the demographics for it are staggering if that interests anyone. In North America there is no sport whos live events are better attended and has a more loyal fan base. There has NEVER been the public squabbling between factions due exclusively to the sanctioning body's desire to have only the best events. While it's certainly more of a US thing it's NOT only viewed here---it's slowly becoming world wide in it's viewship.
It seems the perception other forms of auto racing are somehow more "refined" it's interesting that only NASCAR has continually increased it's revenues and constantly attracts extremely talented drivers and stupid amounts of sponsorship money. If this were a sport only appealing to the lowest class of people I wonder why it's the only one still growing while others are struggling?
Yes it IS a sport----despite the ill informed opinions expressed here. You try piloting a 3400 pound car in a crowd of 41 other drivers at speeds approching 200mph for 500 miles. Never mind the****it temperatures are 140 degrees and you're in head-to-toe flame retardant uniforms with little or no air flow for "cooling". Try driving around in your personal car during the summer with windows closed AND the heater on "full" and see how well you'd do at normal speeds! Even if you disregard the G forces you experience this is still an endurance event with NO rest periods or time outs like most sports.
Once upon a time there was a TV show which pitted various atheletes of different sports against one another in friendly competition. Football, basketball, baseball and other discplines were represented along with race care drivers. In every event the drivers ALWAYS finished quite well which only says their level of conditioning and training was at least as good as the others in attendance.
If it's your personal perference to dismiss someone ONLY for this reason it's somewhat understandable I guess----as I said I feel the same way about smokers!!

With the exception of the Olympics I just never watch prof sports because if I were that much into it I would want to be participating in it- not just watching it. As it is, I would rather spend my Sunday afternoons hiking, working out or doing something w/ my son. If I'm going to be watching something it would have to be a movie with a reasonable plot and/or cool special effects!

What will turn me away is when someone refers to NASCAR as "hick, redneck" "missing teeth." Because that shows me a person with a very shallow character who sterotypes things.
