Pickled herring. I know it sounds weird but I like it, it's high protein (which I need), and it's one of the highest in omega 3 fatty acids. The stuff I buy is wild caught and as far as I know, herring is not an endangered species.

Outside of that I like hummus and pita, fruit and cheese, sliced turkey breast, Trader Joe's Woven Wheat Crackers (kind of like Triscuit but better and cheaper). Tortilla chips.

BTW, to the woman who liked the Greek yogurt: you can make something similar at home. I take a quart of yogurt, line a sieve with a couple of layers of cheesecloth, and let the yogurt drain overnight in the fridge. I cover it with a lid, leave it sitting over a bowl to catch the whey. The volume of yogurt is reduced by half and you get a very thick, creamy yogurt. You can do what you want with the whey - add it to smoothies, soup, whatever. Or toss it out. I hate to be wasteful but I do like that thick Greek style yogurt. That's why it costs so much. You get a lot less for the amount of milk it's made of.

^ I love pickled herring, got my first taste of it in Prague where it's often served as an appetizer in pubs, with lots of onions and vinegar and a roll, been hooked ever since. Incredible when washed down with a pint of that exquisite Czech pilsner.

oops, thread is supposed to be about "HEALTHY" snacks, isn't it?

The way I see it, if it's healthy, it cannot be a "snack" by definition.

I mean, I enjoy a crisp Granny Smith apple with organic peanut butter as much as the next person, but I have a hard time calling that a "snack."

Now, pork rinds and beer...THAT'S a snack! (evil laugh)

This really wasn't a snack, but think it may go with the thread.

This past weekend, some friends and I went to a restaurant called BD's Mongolian Barbeque. I LOVE this place and it's one of my friends and I's most regular haunts. I just hadn't gone in months (since last September). I'd avoided it and many other restaurants mainly due to portion sizes. This weekend though, I realized that it is probably one of the best "smart choice" places to eat. Basically because you choose what goes into your dish from meat to veggies to sauces! AND, they just started doing "mini desserts". Just basically a 2 table spoon dessert of very rich cheese cake or mousse. So, I got to enjoy dinner out with my friends without over doing anything and walking out feeling guilty.

Anyway, I felt good that I made a descent choice AND got to enjoy myself too.

Sometimes, I sprout chickpeas. They are sweet, delicious and "hand-occupying" to eat.

JohnP83,

I loved cottage cheese too and I go through a fair amount of it in a week. My only pet peeve is that it is relatively high in sodium. I love with some strawberries/blueberries/raspeberries.

I tend to stick to mini-meals because snacks don't do much for me .. they only make me want more.

Costco has a low sodium peanut better that I sometimes mix with a tiny bit of jelly/jam and mix well. And yogurt, kefir, etc. aren't bad either.

But as you say, nothing beats fresh fruits and vegetables.

I LOVE special K or kashi granola bars...they're low-cal and 16-24% fibre! I start work at 7:30 so its my morning snack to tide me over...

I also love trail mix and lightly salted soy nuts. mmmm!

I just had a snack that was awesome!! Snap peas and hummus (I used Tribal, mediteranean flavor.) I had it with red pepper slices, too. But, damn, the snap peas with the hummus was really good!

I also enjoy snacking on carrots/celery or apples with 1 or 2 tbsp almond butter. (Or chocolate almond butter with the apples.)

Sliced fresh tomato with a little sea-salt sprinkled on.

Low fat or fat free cheese! (I love cheese)

A banana with 2tbsp chocolate almond butter is sooooo good and filling. It's a little high in calories and sugar, but it's one of those things that fills me up and doesn't really make me gain weight (so long as I don't eat it too, too frequently.) I might try it with only 1tbsp of almond butter and replace the other with a tspn of coconut oil (lowers the total calories, adds a nice flavor.)

I also like a banana with walnuts, low calorie dark chocolate sauce and fat free whipped cream every once in a while.

Crusties used to make fat free brownie mix. I haven't been able to find it in a while, but add walnuts and spread some frosting on top and one serving was only 2.5 g of fat and something like 160 calories. I wish I could find that stuff again!

Smoked oysters (low calories, high protein, high iron, drain the oil for less fat.)

Naval oranges (I just love em)

Berries. Or berries with ff whipped cream. Or berries w yogurt.

Fat free chocolate jello pudding.

I read about an idea that sounds good, but have yet to try it... Slice firm tofu. Spread a small amount of sesame oil and soy sauce on them. bake until edges are crispy. I think it would also be good sans the soy sauce and replaced with teryaki, or instead of the sauces, just a little oil and some seeds spread all over them (sesame, poppy, flax...)

Angel food cake for the indulgent moments. With strawberries and ff whipped cream or yogurt!

I'm on a hunt for some good crunchy, salty/savory treats right not that are low in calories. I bought a bag of low cal pretzels not too long ago. They were little pretzel sticks (50 for 120 calories... not too bad.) But they weren't whole grain or anything and I ate too many and dumped the bag out in the trash :( If I could find some good whole grain snacks (baked with bran, quinoa, flax and that kind of thing) that are low in calories it'd be a miracle! No luck yet... not even a recipe to make my own. Anyone have any ideas?

Happy snacking :)

Aside from fresh fruit and vegies, my favorite snack would have to be nuts. Peanuts mainly. I like carrots also but they seem only to make me more hungry. Raisins are good for curing those pesky hunger pangs as well. Not really a fan of any kind of cottage cheese though. The texture reminds me of a mixture of acoustical foam mixed with mayonnaise.

Fresh fruit and vegetables aside, what is your favorite healthy snack?

Take away the fruits and veg. and you are not left with much.

I like to make Flax Squares.

3/4 cup Ground Flax
1/2 cup Whole Wheat Flour
1/2 cup Quick Oats
1/2 cup Brown Sugar
1 tsp Baking Soda
1/4 of a Nutmeg seed, ground fine.
pinch of salt
optional, butterscotch chips, no more than 1/4 cup

1 Whole Egg
1 Egg White
1 Tsp Orange Juice
1 tsp Vanilla

Other than that you can not go wrong with edamame.
It is the only soybean that contains all of the amino acid building blocks making it a complete protein and pretty tasty.

I usually have a bag of trail mix in the fridge.

Raw sliced unsalted almonds
raw unsalted pumpkin seeds
walnut pieces
goji berries
dried currants

I do like cottage cheese, and even just a slice of cheese here and there.

If I'm craving chocolate, I sometimes take 2 whole wheat stoned wheat thins and spread them with 1/2 tsp of Nutella...higher in sugar yes, but it tastes exactly like chocolate covered pretzels, and is only 150 calories for 3 crackers+1 tsp of Nutella!
