| The Environment - Are you concerned about it? What are you doing to help? Posted: 7/6/2009 5:57:30 AM | I have been doing stage lighting for REGEN (http://www.regen.org.au/index.php?page=home) for many years. I have also done events with Solarsonics, a Newcastle collective who use a self-built solar generator to power their events. I am a blood donor bringing the environmental fight to a whole new level. I have also been involved with Sydney Earthdance for many years, and now Byron Bay Earthdance. I have spent a significant amount of money invested in new L.E.D. technology. All these events are done on a volunteer or sponsorship basis. Most of these events are held outdoors, and I am part of a social core, teaching kids how to respect the Australian bush! | |

How about Nuclear fusion, its a very clean energy if there is enough research put into it there would be no need for any other form.
We already have this energy source - it's massively powerful, should keep providing free clean energy for hundreds of thousands of years all going well, no input required, no pollution. We call it The Sun...
What worries me about nuclear fusion is can it be controlled? Or will some brilliant genius start the reaction and it feeds on itself, becoming unstoppable? That would really be global warming....

I beg to differ..... Living in Tassie "enough said?".
I am concerned about the environment but not to the extent that some are ... I am not opposed to those who are, in fact quite the contrary but, I think we all have our passions and this is not mine .... in saying that....as stated above, I live in Tasmania, and when this place starts heating up, then, I will truly believe that there is something in global warming. Am I ignorant? Does everybody believe that this is the huge problem that it is said to be? Because (totally factless) IMO and others, both here and in QLD, winters seems to be getting colder and longer. Is there a simple explanation for this? Or have I really just gone stark raving mad (yes, goes with the territory!) and "really" buried my head in the sand on this one?.
I find articles like this one interesting...........
I always find it amusing to see a global warming advocate foaming at the mouth as they repeat the same story over and over again. Carbon dioxide is the big killer, the one cause for our imminent demise as a species and the planet as a whole. Never mind that there are greenhouse gases other than carbon dioxide, gases that are more potent by several magnitudes. Never mind that just about every living organism generates carbon dioxide and has been doing so for billions of years. Never mind that a forest fire, or a mild volcanic eruption, generates more carbon dioxide than we do as a species in a year. Never mind that we only have accurate worldwide temperature data for about the last 150 years at best. Never mind that the Earth's average temperature has fluctuated enormously throughout history with the first few billion years not even a car, or a fossil fuel burning energy plant, in sight.
So in light of all this it is clear to me that this is just another way for the politicians, and other interest groups, to be able to steer the public into a certain direction. Fear of imminent demise or the risk of your children not having a future has always been a great tool in the hands of politics to get the public to do their bidding. There is an abundance of examples of this in recent history. It is especially effective when dressed up in pseudo science which the public will take for fact and thus act accordingly. Who is going to protest if a little extra tax is going to guarantee you or your children a better future? Right? Fear is a great motivator.
How about instead of wasting all our time whining and living in fear of something that even global-warming advocates have said is 'irreversible' we make an effort to reduce pollution and hence improve the environment? Many up and coming 3rd world countries are producing enormous amounts of waste, which, if left unchecked, pose a severe threat to the environment. Even if human-contributed greenhouse gases are aiding global-warming, what can we do about it in the short term? Effectively nothing, really. Alternative energy sources are either still in development but are by default economically unfeasible and years away from being so, which puts fossil fuel resources in incredibly high demand. The politicians are mostly to blame for this with their narrow minded and short sighted views. Remember that the vast majority of energy we rely on for transportation, food, water, communication, and running the PC you use to flame the author of this column has to come from burning fossil fuels.
So I am sure we can all agree the world is warming up, most likely caused by a natural global temperature cycle that takes 100s, 1000s or even billions of years and to which we as humans are not really a contributing factor, nor of any influence if we wanted to. But the fact that we are in need of an alternative, less-polluting source of energy which does not rely on consuming the Earth's natural resources is not up for debate. However, in the absence of any solutions that make economical or logical sense, or the politicians stubbornly refusing to fight the real cause of the problem, I will make my own contribution. This simply means I will continue to drive my fuel-efficient car, make sure I turn off the lights when I leave a room, will not have my PC running all day, turn the TV off when I am not watching it and generally do the kinds of energy-conserving things that we should be emphasizing. Common sense should always be a better motivator than fear, and even politicians with an agenda must realize that, even if that fact is not as economically attractive to them.
In the meantime I will continue to do my bit, recycling, saving water and power, etc.

We have an abundance of solar, you have a brilliant hydro resource - we should come to an arrangement... heh heh
Hmmm, is global warming a legitimate scientific argument? This thread could go on and on (and on, and on.......)
The problem we all face is who do we believe? There are scientists on both sides of the argument with legitimate facts, and there are lobbyists on both sides filtering the information to present their case as strongly as possible. And we can't simply use our own experience, our time frame is too restricted.
For example, I live on the Murray River - we are in the worst drought in recorded history, and people are lamenting the state of the river "you can walk across the once mighty Murray - the river has stopped flowing" is a common expression. Ok, it is bad no doubt. But my father is 75 years old and lived here all his life, and he can remember walking across the river to go to work! (he usually rowed a boat). So the river obviously wasn't flowing then either.... this isn't the first time it has happened, nor will it be the last. The problem is that we are now so dependent on it, and are mismanaging it, so the effect is far worse than it was then. But don't get me started on that....
My attitude is to do the best I can to look after our world - whether global warming is real or not, it is real that we are polluting and changing the environment by our presence. We need to at least try to live in harmony with our environment - it will make the world a better place, even if it's only because we become less selfish...

trying to make a point bout forest workers etc most ppl blame us for it
If you read my previous post on the state of the Murray River you might guess that I am passionate about caring for it and managing it properly.
Now don't tell anyone, but I'm an irrigator, have been most of my life in one way or another, as were my father and grandfather before me... so I know exactly what you mean. We get blamed for all the woes of the river system. Just because we make a living from it doesn't mean we don't care about it - in fact we have a vested interest in making sure it is managed properly. From my perspective most people who live and work on the Murray have a far greater knowledge of how to care for it than the boffins in Canberra, but will they listen to us??
I guess it is much the same for you in forestry tassiegreatplace, just remember when people are laying blame and pointing the finger, they are ignorant of their ignorance...

Posted: 7/6/2009 11:31:47 PM | Hi photoman001, I'm a bit late as i never read the forums on plenty of fish unless its mid winter and a miserable rainy day like today and it's the first time i've replied to anything. Your first paragraph about the 33% tax, don't get me wrong but i am one of those people who as well as you and like many others play the game and pay the tax. I don't begrudge the monies because i want to see health and wellbeing up at the top like education too as well as green and green again. What is your home like green everything i hope, well my home this one anyway started with all recycle everything, set in a valley where everyone thinks the same as me on green issues with some more tolerant than others. I have solar panels but feel wind is just as productive specially when the wind blows at night and recharges the batteries as well as the solar by day. Composting toilet is my latest conservation effort, no more waste water. My imprint is virtually nill except for my car but sadly can't afford to get a gas car yet. My bills are minimal and i have the wildlife who accept me as part of the local environment. I feel education is where it starts, my kids who are now grown with kids of their own are also conscious of the fragile environment and issues relating to health and education, we vote and make a difference, hope your kiddies do the same.

It provides 24-7 power for (only 12/24 volt) the lighting for a home I am (still) building. The gadget that does this is a 'micro hydro generator'. ......., and I grow a sh#t load of trees (hard wood) too.

| The Environment - Are you concerned about it? What are you doing to help? Posted: 7/7/2009 6:07:34 AM | Well Possibilitarian "interesting" is not the word I would have used to describe those four paragraphs of drivel. I respect an article when it is backed by facts, not ignorant and uninformed opinion. I would have laughed if it was not such a serious subject. Let me point out just ONE error from the many.
<div class='quote'> Never mind that we only have accurate worldwide temperature data for about the last 150 years at best. Never mind that the Earth's average temperature has fluctuated enormously throughout history with the first few billion years not even a car, or a fossil fuel burning energy plant, in sight.
Firstly he (you can tell by the ego) presents the only FACT in the article about '150 years of records'. Then in the very next line makes a statement of opinion in direct contradiction to the fact he just presented! The rest of the article is about the same standard. Just what we need are more journos telling the general population that there is nothing we can do about global problems and no matter what we do the situation won't change. This is the sort of rubbish the the Federal Opposition present as 'fact' when opposing green bills in the parliament. I'm sure many of them told a young Bob Brown the same down on the Franklin river 33 years ago. "Your wasting your time Bob, you'll never make a difference."
I base my opinions and information on first-hand knowledge, years of experience and years of research. So I get annoyed when people say that "85% of your facts are wrong" and then present nothing to back up this statement.
I have nothing against loggers working for a gutless state government who wouldn't stop building dams because they didn't want to face the backlash of putting thousands of men out of work because there was nothing else for them to do. Most of Tassies Hydro was running at around 15% back in the mid 70's and if pushed could have produced enough power for most of the east coast of Australia. They didn't NEED another dam which is why the Franklin-Gordon didn't go ahead. So here we are 33 yrs later without that dam and hydro plant and is Tassie short of power? I don't think so. Holding the dam workers responsible would be like blaming a soldier for fighting in a war he didn't have any say in.
Now I think the reference Tassiegreatplace made about the desert may have been referring to the "Habitat 141" project where Greening Australia plans to replant vegetation, trees, along 700km of land from NSW and down between SA and VIC. Started in 2007 and supposed to take 15 years for the major stage it is well ahead of schedule with the area joining the two deserts completed. This was mainly to stop soil errosion and huge tracts of land and sand from shifting. Log onto their site and see some of the mind blowing programs this group is into. Massive seed banks and country wide programs with a vision for the next 50 years.

| The Environment - Are you concerned about it? What are you doing to help? Posted: 7/7/2009 4:36:45 PM | Thank you for your response photoman. There are always two sides to every story and I like to know both before I form my own opinion... as I said this is not my passion and clearly acknowledged my ignorance. So what you are saying is that the statements he has presented are incorrect? Here are those statements in question form.
Are there greenhouse gases other than carbon dioxide, gases that are more potent by several magnitudes?
Does every living organism generates carbon dioxide and have they been doing so for billions of years?
Does a forest fire, or a mild volcanic eruption, generates more carbon dioxide than we do as a species in a year?
Do we only have accurate worldwide temperature data for about the last 150 years at best?
Has the Earth's average temperature fluctuated enormously throughout history even though in the first few billion years there was not even a car, or a fossil fuel burning energy plant, in sight?
Are many up and coming 3rd world countries producing enormous amounts of waste, which, if left unchecked, pose a severe threat to the environment?

| The Environment - Are you concerned about it? What are you doing to help? Posted: 7/7/2009 6:16:27 PM | photoman, the Habitat 141 project looks like a good initiative (although I think they were the group who scared everyone who lives here by suggesting we would be restricted from visiting a lot of state forest areas along the river - conservation is great, but surely it can be managed so we actually get to appreciate it?)
Anyway, I think the project tassie might have been referring to and the one I was originally referring to is a new solar electric development going somewhere near here. http://www.solarsystems.com.au/154MWVictorianProject.html This one looks very promising - and it's only $420M!
They have also been talking about a solar tower project for many years... http://www.enviromission.com.au/EVM/content/technology_technologyover.html I prefer the heliostat technology in the other project though, seems more achievable... but I'm not an engineer.

| The Environment - Are you concerned about it? What are you doing to help? Posted: 7/8/2009 6:00:36 AM | Hello again Possibilitarian. There is nothing more attractive than an open mind on any subject. With the resources of the internet now it is so easy to find answers to these questions or present enough doubt to totally discredit them. Now I'm not good at copying quotes but I'll give it a go:
Are there greenhouse gases other than carbon dioxide, gases that are more potent by several magnitudes? By definition yes, several of them. BUT, they are in MUCH LESS concentration than CO2. In fact Wiki quotes CO2 as being 87% of the cause of Global Warming. See http://www.gdrc.org/uem/waste/waste-gases.html
Does every living organism generates carbon dioxide and have they been doing so for billions of years? I think any Grade 3 student can answer this one. I think we all know that trees absorb CO2 and creat Oxygen. Like most seaweeds do as well making the oceans a huge carbon sink. The ocean covers two thirds of the earth. I don't think we need to say too much more on that wild statement.
Does a forest fire, or a mild volcanic eruption, generates more carbon dioxide than we do as a species in a year? I love this one. How big a forest fire? Burning for how long? Seeing as there no instruments capable of measuring the volume of CO2 from either a forest fire OR a Volcano then I think we call call this one BUSTED. Two referrences for you from Wiki, the first tells us that 60% of Volcanic emission is in fact Water Vaper. Yep, some call it steam. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_gas Second referrence lists the six larger contributors of CO2 to the atmosphere as: 1. From combustion of fossil fuels and wood; 2. As a by-product of hydrogen production plants, where methane is converted to CO2; 3. As a by-product of fermentation of sugar in the brewing of beer, whisky and other alcoholic beverages; 4. From thermal decomposition of limestone, CaCO3, in the manufacture of lime, CaO; 5. As a by-product of sodium phosphate manufacture; 6. Directly from natural carbon dioxide springs, where it is produced by the action of acidified water on limestone or dolomite Now I don't see Forest fires or Volcanoes in that list anywhere?
Do we only have accurate worldwide temperature data for about the last 150 years at best? Yep, generally air temperature since about 1850. Ocean temperature from about 1880.
Has the Earth's average temperature fluctuated enormously throughout history even though in the first few billion years there was not even a car, or a fossil fuel burning energy plant, in sight? Well has it? See the previous answer. If records have only been around for 159 years and I don't remember seeing weather reports in the Bible or elsewhere where does this information come from? Someone just made it up because it's a great read!
On behalf of the Earth, the defence rests.

| The Environment - Are you concerned about it? What are you doing to help? Posted: 7/8/2009 6:15:55 AM | Apologies for 'double dipping; but I wanted to report on my Email question to various people on the amount of 'Green Power' our alternative energy sources are actually producing. I found lots of people standing up for Green Power and beating the drum. There is a government www.greenpower..gov.au website, a greenelectricity website. The Greens website and Choice gets in on the act too. So I emailed all of these and several Green MPs with the question above. Three replies so far all refer me to the Govt website, which doesn't have the information! So like a lot of others these people all want to 'look green' and sleep peacefully at night in the belief that everything is under control and disclosed on one all consuming website. Errrrrr, wrong!
So I emailed back to the Greens who have now referred me to their Boffin in Canberra. He was polite enough to email me back to tell me he was too busy right now but my questions "were interesting" and he asked if he should bring them up at the next Senate Estimates Committee? Hmmm, I wonder if the earth will still be here by the time the Pollies investigate this one and find the answer. I bet the media could find out a lot faster! I might try them next.
If you feel you want to know the answer to this question and others then fire off a few emails yourself and let us know the results. If nothing else it will get these people talking about the subject and show them we mean business.

| The Environment - Are you concerned about it? What are you doing to help? Posted: 7/8/2009 4:42:03 PM | Couple of points there photoman...
Does a forest fire, or a mild volcanic eruption, generates more carbon dioxide than we do as a species in a year?
1. From combustion of fossil fuels and wood;
Now I don't see Forest fires or Volcanoes in that list anywhere? I guess forest fires could be included in that?
There have always been forest fires and volcanic eruptions - the problem could be that we have upset the balance by adding more CO2 from burning coal and removing massive areas of forest. So before we decided to dig up coal/oil and burn it, Co2 out = CO2 in. The earth is now producing more CO2 and using less.
There have been a number of documentaries made (yes, including Mr Gore's) showing the studies done using ice cores from Antarctica to estimate atmospheric gases and global temperatures back through time... So science can make an educated guess about these things.
The reason we are still having this discussion, is there are waaaay to many facts for us to take in. There are so many permutations of the truth - how can we ever know for sure what is actually right?
I say we just do what feels right to us, provided we consider how it affects our fellow man and the other organisms on this planet we really can't go too far wrong.
|
| The Environment - Are you concerned about it? What are you doing to help? Posted: 7/8/2009 4:53:05 PM | on the amount of 'Green Power' our alternative energy sources are actually producing
The green power website has it's annual and quarterly reports available here:
http://www.greenpower.gov.au/our-audits-and-reports.aspx
Not sure if that is the info you are after? For example the executive summary of their latest quarterly report states total greenpower sales for the Jan'09-Mar'09 quarter were 510,880 MWh. There is a table of how that is distributed, then an audit report on each of the green power suppliers. Very interesting stuff if you like facts and figures. The Annual report has some great charts and summaries, but I don't have the time to read all 148 pages of it!
edit:
Abare have some data on total energy use as well

The main problem with a knowledge of physics... is a knowledge of physics.
I admit to being bound by my understanding of the physical world - no doubt this restricts me from opening my mind to concepts outside my experience. And I respect your beliefs and experiences/knowledge on that..
I understand, physics, 'seems' to be a branch of science that, believes it has absoulute's of science.. so I cannot blame you for holding true to those beliefs... Whereas I have viewed, questioning of some laws such as faraday's law... and others.. that dosen't sway me either way to old physics or to new physics...( I have no opinion/stance on it) but 'just' enough to cause ' reasonable doubt' and stay opened minded to new scientific research.. and knowing there are scientists working on many theories..
I realise the theory.. of aether/ether..or the fifth element of nature.. was way.... long... long time ago, and that physics in its mind, believes its not valid..(so understandable..) therefore thrown out.
But science is exciting...and ever changing/learning/growing... excerpt from a current science.....2009 article
http://esciencenews.com/articles/2009/04/28/particle.physics.study.finds.new.data.extra.z.bosons.and.potential.fifth.force.nature Particle physics study finds new data for extra Z-bosons and potential fifth force of nature Published: Tuesday, April 28, 2009 - 08:30 in Physics & Chemistry
The possibility of a fifth force could dispute the long-held belief that the force of gravity is the same for all substances.
"New physics beyond the Standard Model is the next frontier," Derevianko said, "and it's the theoretical motivation for much of this research."
Source: University of Nevada, Reno So it's all good.. having people working on all theories.. (both old and new)...hopefully will give us many options in how we go forward in solving many problems... which is the goal... working together, collectively to better the earth.. and all living things... I believe there are inventions already out there, working in different sectors, that will help mankind..(not neccasarily any I've mentioned) and not limited by current availability options..
There's a guy working on a magnet/coil/kinetic energy..M2E (within physics ).. that will need no batteries to charge such things like cell phs.. radios (for armies for etc)(he found his research within usa govt funding) and just by vibration/movement of the person will recharge such gadgets.... now that does sound 'out there'.. but it is based on old technology.. but hopefully he can achieve... a level, that can be applied to many larger things..getting rid of the need for batteries whatsoever.. some people use small magnet motors to help power their wind turbines.. Would'nt it be great, if every electricical device was fitted to vibrate/motion/to the extent it recharged itself as it was used...
And IF I was going to apply latteral thinking to possible usages... what about planting heaps of trees.. using this technology to use trees swaying to power homes?.. that way.. birds/animals get to keep their lives and trees are the earths lungs and.. trees could also still be used, for resouces... just being replentished/replaced etc.. planning ahead.. etc.. just a thought..
this product is already on the market.
If you are lucky enough to have the sun that shines so bright, then you can have the chance to put on a solar vest while soaking up the sun and have your electronic gadgets being charge while you are on the go. The solar vest has 4 solar panels with 8,800mAh capacity, a multiple connectors, a canvas vest, and a 5V, 6V, 9V, 12-20V output. Priced at $140, this solar vest works perfectly to people who are always outside and carries their gadgets with them all the time. They can now save on energy usage, as they need not to plug their chargers on an electric socket just to get it charged. With the sun as a sustainable source of energy, this product is truly and environment friendly one. (now I don't have any of those gadgets, nor am out in the sun all day... but if it dosen't work on vibration, but only solar.. surely..the vest could be just hung up outside..?... (I've not looked into the actual technology of it).. I do know 1 guy who winds a gadget to power his mobile.. and another lady who has no power,or landline and is 70.. who could use that to charge her mobile)for emergencies..
An interesting branch to inventions.. "The field of biomimetics encompasses a broad range of topics, generally based on the concept of 'learning from Nature' in areas ...
1 guy has developed a way to use kinetic energy from waves.. or ocean... possibly other water.. He has raised funding, and expects to be able to make generators...within the technology.. the co is bioWAVE..Systems are being developed for 250kW, 500kW, 1000kW capacities to match conditions in various locations.
And the guy who won 11 Feb 2009 ... Ahlstrom's Disruptor™ PAC - a leading edge technology for water filtration – received INDA's Visionary Award. I think Sa is thinking of using it's storm water in the future...? I'd want that as pure as I could get it.. not knowing whos throwing what into the water supply..ie car oils..waxes/lead particles etc..
It's all very exciting...I guess my view is, theres alot going on out there.(that were not yet aware of) that will help..is helping.. and hopefully we can implement some of it on large scales soon.. looking at water needs and energy needs being 2 big factors to many countries.. especially aust.. especially heavy polluted countries.. (I'm thinking of the poor kiddies with asthma/lung diseases..etc.. and the high death rates in polluted air.. countries such as china.. I think your a good hearted person, who cares deeply about these things, so I think your great for that...
peace

but isn't it more about people than solar panels etc .? Unless people on this little planet change their ways then NOTHING will change
Exactly!
We have to realise that our attitude does make a difference - even the small things like turning lights off, hanging the clothes on a clothes rack rather than putting them in the dryer, refilling your water bottle from the tap etc, are all just as important as multi-million dollar solar plants, because the cumulative effect of everyone doing that is massive. We (as a civilisation) need to start caring more and wanting less...
I will still need the solar panels to power my laptop and modem though. The basic human needs: food, water, shelter, love, net access.......
