Hmmm ....I still don't get this one . Why are some people so obsessed with spelling? If a word is spelt incorrectly does it make someone bad? As I've said before, what makes me laugh the most is that lots of people who say that they hate bad spelling will always have "some college" or "some university" in their profiles. That is very strange.

I think the word's your and you're are pretty much universal in most English speaking countries.
I have noticed though that although we 'speak' the same language here in Australia (well, sort of) as you do in the USA the spelling is different.
You spell 'center' we spell 'centre' You spell 'tire' we spell 'tyre' and so on.
What IS annoying is companies misspelling words deliberately and quite often substituting 'Z' for 'S'..... eg: "Big Boyz Bargains" How are our children going to learn?

the grammer and spelling nazis are out in force on this one. english teachers are losing power in todays text society and they can't stand it. their arrogant "learning proper english is the most important thing that you will ever learn" is being set aside, so their attitude of superiority isn't being respected as they think it should. math and science have superseded english in importance and rightly so. our modern society needs engineers and scientists far more than we need to be able to quote shakespeare.(old bill didn,t write a word, his plays were written by an italian)

Ive noticed from reading the forums that very few people in the U.S seem to know the difference between "your" and "you're" and many seem just to use "your" all of the time. The thing is that some of those who miss spell this word seem quite capable of spelling it correctly so i'm wondering if there are certain parts of the U.S where "you're" doesn't exist?

It has been suggested to me that people don't bother because it is simply easier to use "your" but spelling it correctly takes not even a second longer so are there certain areas where people just use one spelling?

I've noticed that you have made a number of grammatical errors in your posting,OP

It has nothing to do with being a grammar nazi. If you are not going to even attempt to try and learn or pay attention to such small detail ,then chances are you are not going to try on your job or carrer either. Again, i am terrible at language but at least i try as well as try to improve.

So much of this would be avoided if parents would correct their children. Its not "cute" when your child says "mommy i eated it all!" Just correct them ,it's not hard and most children are proud when they learn.

Well I'm quite stupid you see and can hardly string a sentence together, I was just meanng that i think those who have the ability should use it

It's a shame that people think that you must have your head up your bum to feel that people should want to reach their full potential in life

'm not going to accept a reprimand from someone whose habit is to inflict extra vowels into words.

neighbor
no "u".

I could go on at length (leungth).

Don't blame people who use the Oxford English Dictionary for the fact that Daniel Webster couldn't spell worth a shite.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever read a history book that wasn't completely wrong?

I think they just get lazy about it. All you have to do is look at serenitycw's post, she was so lazy she couldn't hit the "shift" key to capitalize her letters.

I'm glad somebody pointed this out. I also cringe a little when I see these mistakes. However, nothing makes me more irritated than rereading my own posts and seeing an obvious error.

Well, 'prof,' there are people who are not sure of the differences in spelling for you're and your. Often, however, I think it is people who are typing fast and not proofreading and making mistakes they don't catch.

For example, someone might type in 'Ive' instead of 'I've.' Or he might type 'miss spell' instead of 'misspell.' Or even type 'i'm' instead of 'I'm.' Or even 'U.S' instead of 'U.S.' Go figure. people should probably profread. Oh, and btw: the single pronoun 'I' is always capitalized.

I read and post more frequently on sports forums so I run into a lot of “loose” instead of “lose” and “lossed” instead of “lost”, drives me insane.

^^^I think it has as much to do with laziness than anything else. Online people think it is not important to use correct English spelling, grammar or punctuation. Like so many other things, people are getting overly careless and casual about language.

I think people should proof read their profiles more often. It might just be spelling, but it's all part of the first impression.

That is usually my first thought when I see it once maybe even twice, but when it is the same forum regulars doing it repeatedly, it makes me wonder.

Your refers to something you possess "it's yours". You're is short for "you are".

Just like the guy the other day who posted a topic that said "drive threw" . It's Drive Thru as in you drive through it to get your food not threw as in you threw something.

Come on people, this is grammar school stuff! After all them years in school we should know how to write a sentence let alone spell.

Oh there are definitely people who don' t know the difference. There is also an attitude that it doesn't matter; that is, there is not much value in some people for the written word. The internet, text messsaging, song lyrics, a whole lot of things have given some people the idea that standard English is not really important and certainly not a sign of intelligence or education.

It's when I start to see this sort of thing on professional websites, online articles, daily newspapers and magazines, that the real impact of poor spelling and grammar really sets in. In these publications, you'll see things like "a women" - when they meant "a woman", incorrect use of "they're, their and there", "too and to" and the list goes on. I knew the difference in these words, their use, meaning and proper spelling when I was 7 years old, for God's sake. I agree with posters who have said that it's laziness. Of course it is. To me, it's simply pride in yourself. You might care about your outward appearance, your clothes, hair, how you smell, your hygiene (i.e. being clean etc.) but then as soon as you put something down in a profile, or write something in an essay or resume - then proper spelling and grammar..... that doesn't matter? It's the same thing. People who care about their appearance should care about that too.

I also notice a lot of "Should of's" when folks are writing online when they're trying to say should've.

I notice that too, and similar things. Now THAT has nothing to do with spelling, that's just bad language skill. Those instances definitely stand out and make an impression on me.
