Sure bugs are great... as long as they stay outside where they belong. If they come into my space (indoors) they are gonna get SQUASHED!!

Nature is indeed awesome, dragonflies being just a sample of her genius. A crew from North Carolina was working next to my house a few years ago and asked if they could sting or bite people. I can only guess that they'd never seen a dragonfly before but were quite relieved when I told them that they hunted only smaller insects, misquotes being one of their favorites.

But, speaking of Nature's Awesome abilities, how many here know of an air breathing spider that lives completely underwater? Google Bell Spider to find out more. I am not trying to hijack the OP's thread but rather expound on the true wonders of nature.

What about heart worms? Most people are worried about their dogs getting infected but several hosts are available, including humans. But what few people know is that a mosquito is required twice for any heart worn to live. Mature adults produce what is called microfilariae. These minute creatures float through the hosts bloodstream until they are excreted or ingested by a mosquito. Only when they are ingested by another mosquito will they become teenagers and, after being 'transported' into another animal will they fully mature. Otherwise, if all the young lived and reproduced within a single host, it would soon become 'Extinction by Greed.'

Dragonflies are neat. Excellent pics! Those don't look too giant compared to some I've seen.

Take a closer look at the size of the brick it's sitting on... it should give you a better idea of the scale involved :)

edit: Actually, I took these pictures with an Olympus Camedia C-50 - it's a very OLD make of digital camera. That alone should give you an idea of how huge these little guys were - I managed to image the entire vascular system of their wings with a piece of crap 5mp digicam I bought second hand, five years ago or so.
