I loved it as in the first book everyone has lots of high tech knowledge but as the series progresses the tech is slowly forgotten. Its really very clever.
(The main plot is about Dragons, but the 1st book does explain their existance in a believable way)
Failing that David Eddings does some brilliant series too. (Wizards, knights, Paladins etc)

| What books would you recommend to me? Posted: 8/4/2009 1:37:03 PM | When the movie "My Sister's Keeper" came out, I wanted to see it at the theater. However, after reading some rather cool reviews I decided to instead read the book, and then maybe watch the movie as a rental once it's on DVD.
I'm 3/4 of the way through the book and cannot put it down. The author (Jodi Picoult) has an enormous talent for storytelling and for keeping the reader drawn in. The characters intertwine one another beautifully, and her writing style is very refreshing. I've purchased two more novels of hers, so I'll be looking forward to them once I've finished this one.
"My Sister's Keeper" is well worth the time you take to read it.

| What books would you recommend to me? Posted: 8/4/2009 3:01:38 PM | I saw the movie "My Sister's Keeper"-and your'e not missing anything-the entire ending of the movie was changed-on second thought, maybe you should watch it. You can then see how much better the book was.
Someone mentioned "The Alchemist" which is one of my favorite books-Paulo Coelho writes books that are very spiritual-searching for answers. Some other great title of his are "The Witch of Portobello" and "Brida"
Another great read is "The Namesake" by an Indian author-just can't rem. the name
If you like crime based novels-I read "Lush Life" by Richard Price-very well written Oh and "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Diaz-it was a difficult and disturbing read-but fabulous.
Great topic! | |

| What books would you recommend to me? Posted: 8/4/2009 4:14:57 PM | Another book I saw at Chapters was a follow up to daniel levetinès This Is Your Brain on Music...The World In 6 Songs. I wouldnèt mind checking that out, but ièll wait for the paperback. Iève studied a little neurology and music and wasnèt too interested in the first book. But i love music and evolutionary circumstance which is the focus more of the 2nd. I did a big research paper on one topic and would love to read more. | |

| What books would you recommend to me? Posted: 8/6/2009 6:42:03 AM | I recommend you avoid recommendations including the best seller list & go to a local thrift store to pick up random jacketless books by writers you never heard of.
All media has always been influenced by pandering and politics so that because a book is popular doesn't mean it's necessarily better.
"My Petition for More Space" was interesting & if the writer was famous & I just didn't know it -- my bad.
Modern fiction: The Secret Life of Bees; The Dogs of Babel; Chalktown; Life of Pi; Intensity. In that order.
You don't have to go very far back until fiction & nonfiction both provide you with enlightenments and entertainments that could not have been intended by the authors.
I avoid****ns, he got paid by the word & Grisham, he keeps writing the same book. I'll read anything by Steinbeck, Bradbury, Asimov, Poe. In that order.
"One Whaling Family" was riveting -- nonfictional diaries from a ship's captain and his wife -- they couldn't've dreamed of the special place in history they achieved with those harpooning antics.
If I need to get in the mood for household chores, I read "Anne of Green Gables" or if I want to avoid them, I log onto POF.

| What books would you recommend to me? Posted: 8/6/2009 8:27:53 AM | I loved secret life of bees, and I thought the movie did it justice which is rare for movies based on books..they usually hack it apart. But i was impressed. Very sweet book, I'd think it more a female oriented book but maybe i'm being sexist. I have the mermaid chair, her first book, but i haven't read it beyond a chapter yet, stuff gets in the way. Sounds like it's have another Mother theme so far. | |

Great read! You would think science would be rather dry but he writes in a very entertaining style. I've always enjoyed his columns. And he gives some great insight into SETI and some pointed questions for the UFO folks. Definite thumbs up.

Journalist and filmmaker Giselle Fernandez wrote":
I most loved her book, "A Man," which she would never allow to be made into a Hollywood movie, as she feared her Man would be turned into a hero and would defy the very soul of the work in doing so. She understood that there was a love far greater than ones own personal need for love. There was a love on a much grander scale that put truth, justice and the future of mankind above all. This is from where she wrote -- a deep and soulful place that would not allow her to be bland or middle ground in any way. For this I loved her.

| What books would you recommend to me? Posted: 8/6/2009 6:13:17 PM | I've made a list from all of the suggestions. It is always great to expand the 'must read' list.
I loved The Curious Incident...and have loaned it to many people.
My favourites are The Time Travellers Wife (movie to be released Aug 14 ), A Handmaid's Tale~Margaret Atwood (I hear the movie was terrible but I will watch it some day), Me & Emma~Elizabeth Flock (A difficult heart-wrenching read, but impossible to put down) The Unbearable Lightness of Being~Milan Kundera Labyrinth~Kate Mosse The Alchemist~Paulo Coelho The Alienist~Caleb Carr (this one I found riveting - a story set in late 1800's about a serial killer and the profilers who attempt to catch him) The Angel of Darkness~Caleb Carr (not as good but if you've read the first one, it is an interesting sequel)

| What books would you recommend to me? Posted: 9/11/2009 2:55:40 PM | I was at Chapters a few days ago and ended up getting 3.
I got a combo book of the time machine/the invisible man: hg wells. never read anything from him. reading the time machine currently
and John Levetin's next book, the world in six song: cultural, biological, evolutionary look at music as opposed to the neurological focus of the first book.
and Margret Atwood's new one: the year of the flood. "Amazon.com Review
The long-awaited new novel from Margaret Atwood. The Year of the Flood is a dystopic masterpiece and a testament to her visionary power.
The times and species have been changing at a rapid rate, and the social compact is wearing as thin as environmental stability. Adam One, the kindly leader of the God's Gardeners--a religion devoted to the melding of science and religion, as well as the preservation of all plant and animal life--has long predicted a natural disaster that will alter Earth as we know it. Now it has occurred, obliterating most human life. Two women have survived: Ren, a young trapeze dancer locked inside the high-end sex club Scales and Tails, and Toby, a God's Gardener barricaded inside a luxurious spa where many of the treatments are edible.
Have others survived? Ren's bioartist friend Amanda? Zeb, her eco-fighter stepfather? Her onetime lover, Jimmy? Or the murderous Painballers, survivors of the mutual-elimination Painball prison? Not to mention the shadowy, corrupt policing force of the ruling powers...
Meanwhile, gene-spliced life forms are proliferating: the lion/lamb blends, the Mo'hair sheep with human hair, the pigs with human brain tissue. As Adam One and his intrepid hemp-clad band make their way through this strange new world, Ren and Toby will have to decide on their next move. They can't stay locked away...
By turns dark, tender, violent, thoughtful, and uneasily hilarious, The Year of the Flood is Atwood at her most brilliant and inventive. "
