Mark Haddon ~ The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time ~ Most enjoyable!.

I read that not too long ago too Bella. It was a sweet, light read. I liked how as the reader you understand what's going on and pretty much right away you know who did "the thing" but he doesn't and it's like you go through as he slowly pieces it together.

Middlesex, by Jeffrey Eugenides, in the wake of the Caster S. debacle. It's bout a hermaphrodite's experience growing up with gender issues.

The Death of Vishnu, by Manil Suri - about the value of human life and Indian culture

Also revisiting some old ones like Silas Marner, by George Eliot (pen name of Mary Ann Evans, 19th century writer who, as a woman, couldn't publish under her own name!

Let us know if you read them, and what you thought!

for some reason i fell in love with richard laymon and his book the traveling vampire, although I don't know if you are interested in that kind of horror fiction I was younger when i read. The Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz are pretty entertaining, The Dark Tower series by Stephen King it took me about a year in a half to read the whole series.

If you want sci fi, go way old school - The Lensman series, by E. E. "Doc" Smith. (this is what Buck Rogers was based on).

Classic SciFi - try the Ringworld series, by Niven and Pournelle, or The Foundation series by Asmov.

Fantasy - I agree with the posters about the Pern books. You might also think about The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, or the Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordon. The 13th (and final) book is due out this fall, written by his daughter - a good writer in her own right - based on copious notes and instructions Jordon put together for her before his death.

Fiction with a purpose - I recommend the Big Three - Animal Farm, 1984 and The Lord of The Flies.

Historical Fiction - how about something like The Robe? Like most books, much better than the movie.

Most of my reading nowdays has been history, so I can't give you much in the way of pointers for anything published in this century :-)

I you like English writers (Curious Incident...) I'd recomment Ben Elton. He used to write Black Adder, so if you like that humour you'll probably like his stuff.

(Not really into much fiction, though Ayan Rand's "Athem" gets an honorable mention)

To answer the question:

Currently I'm interested in fiction. So either classic lit (which I've hardly read any of relative to what's out there) or modern lit.

What did you absolutely fall in love with while you read it?

Songs in Ordinary Time, by Mary McGarry Morris.

The first time I started to read it I just couldn't get into it right away, and I put it down. About 6 months later I picked it up, started over, and stuck it out for just a bit.

By the end, I was reading slowly because I didn't want it to end. I think that qualifies as absolutely falling in love with it while I was reading.

It's fantastic.

I've read a few others by this author and found them all good, but so far Songs in Ordinary Time has a comfortable lead over the others.

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It's the story of Kind Arthur told from the point of view of the women. I've read it at least four times, possibly five, and I'm sure I'll read it again.

Your satchel is full of wonderful recommendations; I'd feel foolish to add to the weight...

Rather than foist my own taste for literature upon you, I have only this to say:

It pleases me no end to know that some of us still find comfort in curling up with a good book... That some of us still actually read...

My waning faith in humanity has been restored... And a big hug and kiss for all who responded to this thread...

See ya at the library...

I've started reading several books. One is called Auslander by Paul Dowswell which is a young adult fiction based in WW2 times Germany, from the point of view of a boy. Another is called The Boy in Striped pajamas by John Boyne, also from the point of view of a young boy. If you've seen the film you may like to read the original novel version. I know both those books are really geared towards young adults but they do make good interesting reading, so fully recommend.

For classic fiction I always recommend Agatha Christie books to everyone I meet- yes I'm a HUGE fan of her books, as you can probably tell lol. I especially love the ones that feature one of her main characters, Hercule Poirot- he's so hilarious to read about, and eccentric even considering the year they're set in.

Other fav authors include Nick Hornby who recently wrote the screenplay for the upcoming movie An Education, and has had two films made from his books. I especially love reading About A Boy, and A Long Way Down, which is written from different characters' perspectives, and includes themes such as the meaning of life, social pressures, etc.

Anthony Capella's books are also very good. The Wedding Officer is another good book, again based in the ww2 era (I don't know how I manage to find all these books on ww2!). Its set in Italy, so will feature a bit of Italian dialogue as well. I should warn you though that its quite intense, and it revolves around themes like the value of one's life over another, risks in wartime events, and of course, love and hate relationships. At one point I was halfway through the book, when I couldn't continue because the story had upset me that much. I didn't pick up the book again until several weeks later.

EDIT: Sorry just realised how long my message was!! LOL I must be such a bookworm... I forgot to add, another one of Anthony Capella's books is The Food of Love, also based in Italy but this time centred around romance and food. It was the first book I'd read by Anthony, and I've been reading his books ever since.

Another favorite:
The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende. I loved it. The story of a family through several generations from the point of view of the women. Lovely. The movie didn't come close. I should read it again. In Spanish.

Anything by Terry Pratchett is worth a read...enjoyable for all IMO...theres a subtle humor under a heavy layer of low brow humor and an overall good read as far as the storytelling goes :)

Also, Jack Whyte's Dream of Eagles Cycle...great read

Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow, by Orson Scott Card. Though the subsequent volumes take on a completely different tone, these two, especially as companion pieces, are the two books I recommend the most.

In terms of classics, my personal favourite book of all time is The Count of Monte Cristo. Although in the unabridged version, the imprisonment (not spoiling anything here, folks) tends to be a little lengthy and tedious, it is a magnificent tale of a single-minded man who sets his mind to revenge.

For comedy, there are many to choose, including Sick Puppy by Carl Hiaason (sp?), Choke by Chuck Pahliniuk (sp) or Lamb by Christopher Moore.

And lastly, two books that I found to be amazingly inspiration, namely The Power of One by Bryce Courtney (I have no idea whether the movie does it justice) and A Man In Full by Tom Wolfe.

Hey, this is a great thread- I love it! It's given me loads of ideas and reminded me of some old favourites that I need to re-read!! I will literally read anything, high to low brow and anything in between. In no particular order, and trying not to mention books that have already been mentioned:

Small Island-Andrea Levy
The Dark Tower-Stephen King
Dean Koontz- anything by him I have loved. Even books that on the first read haven't affected me, I find myself thinking about at a later date
Terry Pratchett- Cracks me up every time
Robin Hobbs- she's ever so fantasy orientated but I really really enjoy her books.
Katharine Kerr- these are also fantasy books, but really thought provoking.I found myself lost in them.
I like all of the standard chick-lit- but I think that marion keyes is in a class of her own when it comes to that.
Colin Iggoldn- (Not sure I've spelt that correctly) has done an amazing series of books on both Julius Caesar and Ghengis Khan - they sound dry but are fantastic.
The Host- by Stephanie Meyer who wrte the Twilight series is pretty good.

I'm off to read something now. I'll def be back. and thank you again!!
