Does anyone else feel like they weren't meant to be a Californian?

Jackdiamond...

We were on a 2 lane road (2 lanes going in each direction) in the country... so we were the only two cars out there... I watched him come flying up on me and not pass me like he coud have. I slowed down because he was on my ass for 5 minutes and I was tired of it. Sure maybe I shouldn't have sped up when he finally went around me but why should I when he was driving like a moron? Only serves him right.

Go adhead judge me more... tell me I have anger issues or road rage.

bking3... you're only 21 -- that explains a lot.

Maybe in 20 years you'll be able to just move over a lane when someone comes up too fast behind you and have pity for the guy that puts so much aggressive energy into his driving.

Actually... I'm not trying to judge anyone... Just saying we are here talking about the attitude of Californians....

And when someone says something negative about someone else but in fact seems to be having a bad day themselves.... I am saying we are those Californians we are talking about... perhaps we should check ourselves...

Personally... I didn't appreciate you slowing me down like that.... I own that road you know.

Having traveled thru the South, Midwest and Western states of this here beautiful U.S. of A. I have observed that there may be a couple of reasons behind the differences in attitude among the citizenry.

1. California is made up of "immigrants". Whether US born or foreign, most of us come from "somewhere else". Having long standing roots in a community fosters a certain friendliness that just isn't possible when you don't even know your neighbors.

2. That being said, while people in other places may be warmer upon first impression, they can also be very strident in their lack of acceptance of new acquaintances. The newcomer is kept at a arms length until the locals accept you. Small town life is tough for newcomers, and there are a lot more small towns than big cities.

Now Jack, keep your moped outta the #1 lane please. I'm comin' thru.

LOL yes, but most of these immigrants are not here legally and have different ethnic values.

It's true we all came from somewhere else long ago and immigrated here, but the majority of us worked hard and did it legally.

ugh just forget it... Janet you go ahead a let those idiot drivers who drive fast, tailgate, don't look when entering a road, and don't look when merging lane walk all over you out there. Now I don't go around playing policeman but when people do things like that just because they want to go 70 in a 45 I'm not going to tolerate it.

I've had 2 accidents and 2 friends killed because of people like that guy so I have a low tolerance for people who drive like that.

Just because you want to drive like a granny and move over for everyone doesn't mean I'm going to... jeez it's a wonder they let women drive (lol JUST KIDDING! all sexes have good drivers)

and Jack... next time I'll run your ass off that road! lol

Well, it's not their fault they're not here legally. They were until the maps were drawn.

wha? Well, the maps were drawn long ago and many men and women have lost their lives for those little lines so I'm gonna go with that. Society is drawn to order and maps are part of that order.

Heck, I'm all for Northern Cali breaking off from us "southerners" if they want to. It's just the promise of the ensuing political and economic chaos that gives me pause. Maybe it will happen one day, but it will be done legally.

You Sacramento people had better have your passports in order if'n you want to visit Disneyland.

Cali is a state of mind. do wha, do wha....

I wouldn't call the average Californian rude, just not very friendly or outgoing. Most people don't socialize, and don't know who lives 3 doors down from them. I think the pressure of the cost of living and trying to maintain the status have a lot of people on edge, too. Now the state is virtually bankrupt, just like its citizens.
I never got screwed out of a dime until I moved here, I see why the court system is so busy. Be a landlord and find out for yourself! You can't trust anyone in this state when it comes to business. A handshake or promise is worthless. So are contracts most of the time. The lawyers here are licensed criminals themselves.
I'm originally from the Midwest and have visited all 50 states, most several times. Outside of California I found that you never admit to being from California, except maybe in Nevada.
The nicest people are in Missouri and Oklahoma, the upper Midwest, and the South. Hawaiians like it when we leave their state. But after 22 years I still can't get used to the locals, I guess the Midwest in me never left, and I'm proud of that.
As for the drivers, they don't bother me at all anymore. I just stay to the right and enjoy the ride.

Jack, that was rude and uncalled for.

In response, I've revoked your annual D-Land passport, and I'll have to ask you to leave the State now please.

Go on. Move along...and please stay out of the #1 lane.

Best wishes, signed: Miss California (NO! not That one!)

Ask most people where they were born and raised in this town......so although many people "reside" here.......you'd be surprised how many don't have deep roots here........people come here with I don't know what kind of expectations, but they molt in with the multitudes....and we have more of "that"....... I live on my own terms in this town I was born and raised in and my parents and their parents and on and on.. I'm from here, it's still home, no matter how many old homes/neighborhoods/buildings they bulldoze down and put up another set of condominiums. I try to be forgiving on the road....2 wrongs don't make a right....so the more consideration you have out there, the better. Share a smile, do something nice, we could always use more......meanwhile...my home is my home, no matter how unfamiliar the faces get everyday......Somebody has be around to tell people of the old Tuna boats and cannery on B. St. Pier who was there first hand and the old airlines, the Fouts/Joiner/Winslow era, the old Navy towers, what Belmont park used to look like when it was a full sized amusement park...... : ) Just wait till after Labor day, you'll love it here again......less tourists amongst the tourists..... : )

I do miss the old San Diego from the 80's and earlier....but you can't change a thing. We live in a fast paced world here, hollywood, jet set, everybody has to be here and go to the beach lifestyle. Things are much slower in most other parts, especially in the Southwest...people have time to talk to you at the stores or fast food restaurants even. New Mexico people are very friendly, it is refreshing......if only America would catch up with other countries when it comes to vacation.....people need more vacation time and San Diego needs to move further down the list of "vacation spots".........earthquakes have a way of doing that......

I love my native California. The people here can be rude, but it is all part of the fun in living in a metropolis.

I have enjoyed the people of Florida, Missouri, New York, Puerto Rico, Germany, Georgia, Mexico,Nevada, and Washingon D.C. I get along with everyone, and sometimes I wish I was not Californian.

It's all right Shamu...You can come live at Marine World.

They didn't care about the other states....my buddy felt like a bum he said.....sad, but a true story.....then again this was in 1986....

This is an interesting thread.
I am originally a Texan (Dallas, Houston, Austin, Midland/Odessa), but I have also lived in:
D.C.
Woodbridge, VA
Colorado Springs, CO
Sacramento, CA
San Francisco, CA
New York City, NY
East Hampton, NY
Mt. Pleasant, Michigan
Lansing, Michigan
Big Rapids, Michigan
and spent MANY summers in Missouri so I know it well
and spent MANY winters in New Mexico so I know it well
I am soon moving back to California, Berkeley. I am already preparing to open a business there.

This was my experience... All places were friendly, especially New Yorkers (big surprise, huh?), except California and Michigan. California wasn't unfriendly, it just seemed like everyone was afraid to smile at you or make eye contact. I found that strange. I smile at everyone, it is just the way Texans are raised, but people in Cali were uncomfortable with that. They are also waaaaaaaaaaay too judging when it comes to the lastest looks and style. I think I may actually like Berkeley better in that respect. I am moving there because my daughter is there and I am too far from my family here.

In Michigan, they are instantly using their huge network of inbred friends and family to dig up every grain of info on you so they can hurt you or blackmail you because they have nothing else in their life going on and they hate anyone not born here, ESPECIALLY Texans. Now, of course, that isn't EVERYONE, but it is a large majority. It is almost very Deliverance here. Single women definitely do not feel safe here when they were not born here and have no family here.

States and cities DO have their own personalities and some of them are negative. Most people are well aware of this. These days people are either so negative they can't see any good, or so fakely positive they can't see reality. I say call a spade a spade.

That is my 2 cents

don't know what exactly means "Californian" since I haven't lived in any other state since coming to USA except the golden state, but

people in Palos Verdes are snobby and boring

nicest people live in Redondo Beach through Malibu area, Torrance and Gardena are fine too

people in Long beach are weired, it's like communism there, neighbors don't talk to each other and try to snitch about each other

in metrolopitan areas like Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, they are too formal have been married for like 5 times by the age of 30 and do not know how to connect with people except putting their noses above to everyone other than their "type" of fake bastards

San Fernando Valley - just ooo ok , you go fither west Chatsworth , upto Ventura country - even nicer, neighbors see each other all the time, communicate etc.

OC - usually nice people, all over OC including all metropolitan areas, easygoing etc.

Inland Empire - just ooo ok, except some degree of snobism which is directly related with being bored since need extra injection of money to feel happy and/or that's the only thing they consider happyness.

Up North - except metropolitan San Francisco area, the rest are nice people

you go further to north from the Bay area - even nicer.

Well, if you were in this neck of the woods (San Diego County area), I think people were afraid to make eye contact because they don't know what to make of the place...because more than likely they were tourists (long term or short term) and I think hardly anyone knows anybody really here....I get that same thing...but I know the nicer areas...the further east you go of the coast, the more friendly people get and the more local people get and a little more relaxed. I stayed at a hotel a couple of weeks ago near the coast/downtown and you definitely get a motley crew and things seem weird even for someone born and raised here......feeling like a stranger in my own town down there lots.....but everyone else does too I'm sure.

I find it funny, I was raised int he Midwest and never felt like I belonged until I got to Cali. Being in Sac I find that this area has lot and lots of transplants from the Midwest, I think its because it is allot like the Midwest.

Yes, I've heard of a few places that are like what San Diego used to be....and perhaps it's that piece of our "old home we knew" and yet something all together new that we find our homes......It makes me sick to my stomach to watch more and more hillsides get torn up, old buildings and old homes to make way for more condos....meanwhile there's a water shortage.....but the holy dollar rules before sanity and reason. It's easy to see making more housing here means more people will move here which means you need more water...yet there you have it........I'm stuck here for another 10 years for sure since my son is here, but I'm not too sure about the future beyond that. My childhood memories are of nothing of the monster this place is now....yeah, the weather is great and I love the ocean and nowhere is perfect.....I suppose it could be worse if we weren't fortunate enough to have Camp Pendleton between San Diego and Orange county, if we didn't have the other military bases like Miramar and North Island......I'm sure there would be housing all over there and more of a traffic nightmare.....otherwise it would be more housing and worse!!

To comment on Kendra's first comment....In California things go 100 mph it seems and people seem in a hurry constantly, stress probably being the main reason why people are the way they are here....I've been here for 42 yrs and the state has obviously grown but also there are alot of "me" people around too, more then say the midwest? a theory anyways.... it seems once your getting cut off in traffic constantly or the sales people at the stores acting like asses all the time or whatever the case may be it tends to be contagious...if your a nice person it doesn't matter where you live, I just think its the culture out here.....and to think my friend from NY seems to think we are soft out here :-) I just think everyone is focused on doing their own thing in California, probably sometimes to a fault...with that said I won't be moving anytime soon.
