anybody have a job?
Posted: 7/13/2009 12:56:49 PM
Everyone in my family has still got a job except me as I have many other responsibilities right now such as making sure they all can get to work and back home, taking care of a grandchild (as her mom's pay is not enough for childcare). Their jobs are shaky though. Less hours, less opportunity for advancement, and a lot more stress to keep the job than usual. There are not nearly enough opportunities out there right now and those opportunities that are there are for low wages and inadequate numbers of hours.

My daughters job is to decide whether your medical insurance coverage pays or not. My son's girlfriends job is to make you pay delinquent student loans or else she is out of a job.

Both girls are very stressed right now.

I'm reading a book about debts and how shady the lenders are. Their practices are less than moral yet the government legitimizes these practices anyways. While the government put a limit on the amount of interest they can charge you they let them get away with fees, fees, and more fees. You might as well call those fees interest bringing many people to owe 40, 50 percent or more than what they originally borrowed. Being stuck with that makes it look like people are spending on unnecessary items but the real deal is that they are being robbed legitimately by creditors.

president obama is back home, with a deficit of 1 trillion dollars and counting.no its not obamas fault, as i am reminded at the beginning of his speeches how he"inherited" this deficit.
911 is the cause.maybe bush could have stopped 911. i admit he made some mistakes,it was not bush alone, he had bad advisers.
maybe this jobless problem will be resolved soon.it hasnt effected anyone i know, except the fact its just slow.

Yes, I have a 'job'...actually two. Each paying much higher than average wages which gives me the time to do other things. When I'm not doing one, I can work on the other, or work on yet other projects. No time cards.

Then, I'm also a full-time student with the summer off while my time swings to doing both of these. I made the jobs myself as well - 12 years ago for the first and starting 3 years ago for the second as I saw all this coming. Waiting around for government or some saviour to give you one will be a long wait indeed and a truly stupid move.

Hey don't blame the Obama bashers ,blame the supporters. All we heard from their mouths for 6 months was "once that man is in office everything will change, everything will get better" There is little room to talk, we had to hear it for 8 years and now it is your turn to hear it.

So far-( knock on wood)..I still have a job. Been there 12 yrs now and no layoffs. They haven't hired too many new people lately which makes our work load alot heavier. Construction is still going fairly good down here from what I've heard and I know the plant where I worked my 2nd job at for a year is hiring as well. That was hot inside that building but at least it's a job.

i wish obama would hurry up and come home from africa

will he be bringing presents for all of us??.. ..

i think its a scary thing right now for all of us!.. young & old!.. my 18 y.o. son went to apply for a job a few weeks ago.. every place he went too.. he had gotten the same answer 'sorry but we`re not hiring right now'.. very discouraging for him.. (but he did sign up for the reserves a few months back.. so all might not be lost) i told him that he could live at home for a few more years until this recession lets up somewhat..

as far as i know my career is safe.. for now.. i work at a hosp. in ER.. i don`t think the government will be laying off too many staff as we`re needed in this dept.. *keeps fingers crossed*..

I just started at my new job today. Unfortunately for you I am not currently working in construction.

Maybe you should market yourself as an apartment renovator or team up with an apartment inspector. People may not be building, but I gather more people are renting.

Corporations and the "rich" employ millions...it will not be a team of community organizers or politicians that restore this economy if in fact it is to be restored...it will be companies, corporations and yes the rich that will bring it back with ideas, products and services...class envy will destroy this nation if it is not abandoned as a national attitude.....this country is starting to remind me of a story i heard once about a man who had a house and a man who didn't,one day the man without a house was visited by a Genie, the Genie said you can have one wish, whatever in life you want can be your's,the man thought for a moment and said... i wish his house would burn down...and that is where so many people are today...embittered by their own circumstances they will listen to and follow anyone who promises to go after whoever they feel is responsable for their situation...even if it destroys what made the nation great and prosperous, even if they are the ones to blame...industry and free enterprise is what has provided the life that is the envy of the world.....some people i think would be content to live in tar paper shacks as long as they knew everyone else would be to.

right. the rich getting exponentially richer and the poor getting steadily poorer is good for the country. when was the last time that genie missed a meal?

Income Gap Is Widening, Data Shows

y DAVID CAY JOHNSTON
Published: March 29, 2007

Income inequality grew significantly in 2005, with the top 1 percent of Americans — those with incomes that year of more than $348,000 — receiving their largest share of national income since 1928, analysis of newly released tax data shows.

The top 10 percent, roughly those earning more than $100,000, also reached a level of income share not seen since before the Depression.

While total reported income in the United States increased almost 9 percent in 2005, the most recent year for which such data is available, average incomes for those in the bottom 90 percent dipped slightly compared with the year before, dropping $172, or 0.6 percent.

The gains went largely to the top 1 percent, whose incomes rose to an average of more than $1.1 million each, an increase of more than $139,000, or about 14 percent.

I've got three jobs, in addition to going to school full-time (my real "job"). Forgot one in the previous post. I can work any, all or none of them completely at my discretion. Guess that means two (maybe three) other people are collecting unemployment but are counted as employed.

The President's chief economist now says to expect it to remain this way until the end of 2010 or beginning of 2011. By the beginning of 2011, she'll be saying it'll be this way until the end of 2012 or beginning of 2013 - as if they know any more than you or I.

I've been freelance for the past 8 years, had many ups and downs. Business pretty crappy at the moment but some good signs on the horizon.

I think the concept of having a job is different today to what it used to be.

In my father's time and when I forst went into the workforce 30 years ago, most people got full-time jobs and that was it, you went to work, got paid, were able to make a life with a regular income."

These days there is no such thing as a full-time job, even if some people think they have one. Your boss can let you go just as easily as if you were freelance. With me, if a client decides he doesn't like me, of finds someone he likes more, he just doesn't hire me, simple. You have to have a pretty thick skin to be in my game.

If all the money was handed over to the people instead of the banks and AIG we might be seeing a turnaround. Instead they bailed them out , they got bonuses and we get the bill. DC is nothing but assclowns that are the puppets of the rich, Obama included. It is going to get much worse. If you want news watch the financial shows. The dollar is going to be gone as the world reserve currency soon and then it is devalued and then we are screwed.

In this country the government gave stimulous money directly to the people. I think we are the only G20 country NOT in recession.

It also helped that our banks refused to buy into the bogus sub-prime madness, recognizing it was all smoke-and-mirrors. Government regulation of banks is tighter here too.

It's all Microsoft, GM, DuPont, etc. These big companies headed by rich people that are sinking us. I think we should shut down all these companies. That way rich-people wouldn't exist anymore.

Oh...they hire people to man those factories??? No...never! They CAN'T! benefit us. No way! They just APPEAR to hire people, and they plant those communities that grow up around their facilities. It's all a big scheme by The Man. It's really the poor bum who fuels American indistry!

I graduated in August of 2008 and have still not found a real career in my field (marketing/advertising). No one in this economy wants to take on an entry level employee.

Do I have a job? No.
Do I want/need a job? Yes and Yes.

There are available jobs in this area, but most want experienced workers, not entry-levelers who are still in college.

I'm just thankful that, when I did have a job, I put back a lot of money into savings in case we ever did get into an economic downfall, as we are currently.

Oh, and I'm tired of people bashing Obama and saying it's his fault. No, it's not.

Okay, maybe I exaggerated a bit there. I'm sure I could get a job flipping burgers at McDonalds.

However, there are two reasons I won't do that:
(1.) I am a vegetarian, and I refuse to work in any place that supports the slaughtering of innocent animals and feeding them to humans.
(2.) Fast food work isn't going to give me any real experience for my field.

did someone say fast food? i think people need to be very careful when eating in those places since the staff do not wear hairnets, gloves or even change their gloves after mopping or using chemicals to clean. as i'm typing this , i on hold to the health dept in my city which the phone has beening ringing (20 times) and no one has picked up.

last friday, i took my nieces to the wendys near the mall . it was about 4:00 pm, we were the only folks inside ordering . i noticed 4 women (1 had gloves on) working inside who didn't have gloves or hair nets eventhough their hair was combed back. the only woman who had gloves on was wiping her face/hair and cleaned the counter. she got a bun to make me a burger? i called for the male mgr to cancel my order to chicken nuggets, this dude had a attitude from the beginning. as we walked out the side door, i heard the mgr call me a "slur" and they all started laughing. i came back inside to confront him, he denies saying anything but couldn' t look me in the face. i told him that this place is not clean with the staff not wearing gloves or changing gloves and no hair nets. he gives me a "fake " sorry.

i have already spoken to the health dept (city) to file a complaint and ast mgr to the district mgr for wendy's for that location, she tells me that her husband had been unemployed for six months and just started a job last week, that she is very upset the mgr of all people made those comments and that she just couldn't believe they did not have HAIrnets and GLoves . she goes on blah blah about they are strict about hygiene because the health dept checks and will fine them. i told her i have already complained and is demanding that his dude who was hispanic as well as the 4 chicks to be fired!! i told her that he obviously does this stuff on a regular basis because he felt to comfortable . the ast district mgr goes on about she wants to know what they can do to fix this? i want this man to be "fired" , please do not insult me by offering me coupons or dinners since its not about the food and i rarely go to wendys.

the fast food jobs and sales are the only jobs available right now . in some cases walmart and home depot do not have openings. so, i cannot understand how someone who has a job would be so nasty and disrespectful to a customer. i can remember working at jc penney's having customers complain that i did smile enough or was checking out fast enough.

my sister is in the health field and the temp jobs cannot keep her busy. they call her every blue moon for a job since most doctors insist on wanting spanish speaking folks and my sister does not speak spanish.

^^^Ooh I totally agree with your assessment on health and food preparation. Just recently while in a Mexican joint I saw an abundance of flies enjoying lunch on a pile of rice...lol Sometimes it's just beneficial to spend more on quality food and atmosphere.

Your concern about personal hygiene is spot on, I can sincerely state, that in just about every public rest room I've used, 90% of the men get off the toilet WITHOUT washing their hands! I know that's sad, but so many folks just don't care.
