If there is one thing that kind of bugs me is when I get into silent treadmill races with the person next to me. I'm a very competitive person and if the little **stard keeps trying to increase the speed above mine then I can't resist. I'm not a particularly fabulous runner and I almost ran myself to death one day with this goddamn gazelle beside me.
Thats where you and i differ greatly. I don't do the treadmill, but i find myself doing the same thing on the elliptical machine. It helps with my motivation and apparently yours. You wanna keep pace to see how hard you can push yourself against someone else.
Plus its fun on the days when you look over and see the other person backing off. . And if you can't keep up, well that means i need to work harder at cardio.

| I am curious of other people's workout pet peeves Posted: 7/16/2009 11:38:42 PM | The fitness center I belong to has strict rules. Like we are expected to get clean towels when we check in so that we wipe off ALL equipment we use. They also supply non scent Lysol so items are sprayed and then wiped down. They have small dressing rooms for men and women with outlets to use hair dryers after showering. They supply headphones that you dial in to get the TV or radio stations you want to use. The headphones work on whatever station you use where there is a tv set.
Am not sure what air cleaning system they have but in the four years I have been at this new state of the art fitness center I have never ever seen the place dirty or smelly. Have gone at all hours of the day be it 6 am or 10 pm and the place never has stunk. Maybe its the fact its such a nice size that there is more room between all pieces of equipment. And the insulation and top quality quality help keep noise down as well. They also have a wonderful cafe with organic healthy food that I have taken friends to for dinner, thats how nice the place is.
And the outdoor pool is great, year round. Cannot say enough good things about the place. And it seems to get better and better every year. Even with the economic downturn they have not lost any clients and have actually gained new clients. And the high schools give PE credit to students who sign up for the open PE hours the fitness center offers.

| I am curious of other people's workout pet peeves Posted: 7/17/2009 12:20:04 AM | I could care less what other people do while I'm at the exercise room, but I'm always curious about those who think they're actually achieving anything by putting very little weight on their machine and wizzing thru the reps like the wind. thinking faster is better.
Others's blaring earphones are never pleasant.

| I am curious of other people's workout pet peeves Posted: 7/17/2009 4:09:06 AM | The bottom line is that if you are letting all these petty things get on your nerves then you probably aren't that focused on getting a good workout in. Can't speak for anyone else, but pet peeves for me aren't stressful and don't affect my workout, but after going to the gym for almost 1o years, a few things like that will come to your attention overall.
I wasn't getting the impression that anyone here was overly stressed out about any of it...it's just a thread.

| I am curious of other people's workout pet peeves Posted: 7/17/2009 4:11:15 AM | | I'm going to go to the gym tonight and give the staff there a big sloppy kiss because most of the stuff you guys are describing just isn't a problem there. The owner is female and if any male there ever sexually harrassed a female there she'd bounce him out on his @$$ in a heart beat. Once in awhile weights get dropped, but it's usually an accident. The guys who make a lot of noise while lifting mostly amuse me. I told one of them, "I didn't make that much noise giving birth. If it's that bad decrease your weight." Of course it just bugs the sh!t out of him that this fat girl can out lift him. | |

guys using the hair dryers to dry their junk, Just came across one of those at L.A. fitness the other day and I was pretty disgusted.
The thing I think you have to realize is that gym locker rooms are places where some guys who are in the closet like to "test the waters" a little bit. They have some homoerotic feelings but they can mask it with "Hey, just taking a shower here. Just sitting in the steam room. Nothing gay about standing around naked for an hour or blowdrying my junk."

Perhaps you are a weight dropper? I get in a zone when I workout and it is completley annoying when somebody does it by you. Do you have concentration? Can you concentrate through that? Props to you. Ill live. Honestly It is not necessary. It is always the tough guys with the big guns and big gut to match I have noticed.
Maybe the post will be read and when a person next visits the gym, he/she might wake up and be respectful to all the other people and equipment.

| I am curious of other people's workout pet peeves Posted: 7/18/2009 1:11:31 AM | I never can understand people who workout in the gym or pool, who will stand in one spot talking to another person. In the hour or more time I was there working out, they didn't lift a single weight, do any cardio or swim a lap. Its can be difficult to warm up in a pool, when you haven't done a single thing, other than chat. | |

people on call phones - if you're able to talk during your work out it isn't much of a work out.
mr too much cologne wearer.
women who lift have 2-5Ibs taking up the bench press while they do concentration curls. first off lift more, secondly get off the bench you can do those girls standing
people who park in the handicapped spot but then do 1 hour of spinning and then another of as circuit work out.
people who wait for you to pull out so they can have the closer spot. meanwhile they go and walk on the treadmill...why don't they park farther?
people who hover while you are on a bench.
people who fill their bottle of water while you wait for a sip or two.
guys who still wear zubaz...it's over man.

| I am curious of other people's workout pet peeves Posted: 7/18/2009 6:44:41 PM | When people don't put the weights back up, and instead just leave them either lying around everywhere, or they put the wrong weights in the completely wrong order on the rack. Seems like this happens every füçkin time I go to the gym.
I've noticed there's a lot of people who say slamming the weights gets on their nerves. I don't mind it; I'm actually a big offender myself :D When you're benching 300+lbs, you might understand.

I wasn't getting the impression that anyone here was overly stressed out about any of it...it's just a thread. MalibuJay, the above quote was my original post, in response to the line above it by another poster. Someone quoted it all together in Msg #35 as a regurgitation and didn't add anything.

| I am curious of other people's workout pet peeves Posted: 7/18/2009 8:41:34 PM | | i have to laugh at all the people saying they are annoyed about people talking... put on a set of headphones and stop complaining. The only thing that bothers me is people that dont clean up after themselves... leaving weights on the floor.... not cleaning your benches or machines and leaving sweat stains on them... that is pretty much it. | |

| I am curious of other people's workout pet peeves Posted: 7/19/2009 3:54:57 PM | I have hardly any, probalby the only one would be people who don't wipe off equipment after they are done with it.
Otherwise, I cannot say enough good stuff about my gym - I love the place. The change rooms are very clean, so are the showers, there are ALWAYS three boquets of flowers in the ladies' change room (haven't been to men's so I can't say LOL), even in the dead of winter. Always plenty of kleenexes, even Q-tips and cotton puffs, hair dryers. I don't need to bring my own towel (unless I shower after a workout) as there's a stack of handtowels to be used to wipe off the equipment or to use as your own towel during your workout. Very friendly staff. Did I say I absolutely LOVE the place?
Sometimes I feel like I live on another planet because people at my gym don't talk on cell phones, don't hog equipment, don't stare (at least I don't know - when I am working out I try to focus on my own form and I pay little attention to what's going on around me). The grunters don't bother me; hell, if I could bench 200 lbs I would probably grunt too.

| I am curious of other people's workout pet peeves Posted: 7/20/2009 12:35:19 PM | Its not really a pet peeve but recently at the gym some guy started talking to me. His first comment was man when you get thin you will be beautiful. I was like I am beautiful with just some improvements that I am working on. The next thing he said was dont you feel like you should cover yourself more (i was wearing capri workout pants and short sleeve shirt). Shouldn't you wear sweat pants and long sleeve shirt because you are still fat. Mind you this was one day after I found out I lost 79lbs, am under 300lbs now, and am on a high. I responded to him that if I continued chatting with him I would lose more brain cells than I needed to. So I proceed forward with my workout on the elliptical and guess who comes to do the same and continues to ask me questions. Like for such a beautiful woman why did you get so fat.
So as for pet peeves, people who don't let me work out in peace accomplishing my goals.

guys using the hair dryers to dry their junk, ETC.
wow! People actually do that??
I have 3 Pet Peeves
1) People who stand right in front of me or right beside me when the entire weight area is EMPTY. The beside me part annoys me bc if i'm using the bench it's bc I need to do a chest fly out and they're in my way. Are people blind?? Can't they see that they are standing RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. Frig it's frustrating.
2) People who hog all the free weights and then when you ask if you can borrow a pair of weights they say they're using them. You continue to watch them from a distance and notice that they won't be using them until 15 mins later. 3) People who hog the mat area. Instead of doing their stretches/sit ups vertical and taking up space for 1 person (yourself), they decide to lye horizontal and take up space for 3 people. The mat area in my gym is quite small and can only fit 4 ppl comfortably on it so when someone lying horizontal then there is only room for 1 other person on it
I haven't gone to the gym in 3 weeks bc I hurt my back, then i got the flu and now i got my monthly visitor.. argh!! please can i go this week. please :D I can't wait to hit the gym again.. i feel so out of shape.. i got almost 6 days a week so for me not to go for 3 weeks is a long ass time!
