I like beards and moustaches as long as they are well-groomed. There is some facial hair that is just a bit too creepy, though:
-Big handlebar moustaches with waxed tips.
-Strange artsy beards mostly found on daughters' generation, such as a little chin beard or cheek muttons.

I absolutely love Spaghetti Western beards - the haven't shaved for four days look. It's all so personal. Do what *you* like and the *right* woman will be attracted.

I agree with post #6. You should keep it if you like it. The right woman will apppreciate it. I think a nice *foo man choo mustache and beard* makes a man look hot!

My beard is silver grey. I think it makes me look older but I don't really care. It's not a crime to get older, especially considering the alternative.

I've had a moustache on and off since 1967. Now I have a short beard, about 1/4 inch, because I prefer to run the clippers over it once a week rather than shave every day.

I don't have a weak jaw and I'm not hiding a double chin. I'm 60, in shape, dress well in public, no big belly, great teeth, making the best of what I have, and generally okay with myself...why would I care if my beard makes me look a little older? Like, if I shave it, will I look 30 again?

Gosh, what if it doesn't make you look older OR younger? What if it just makes you look like *you*?

I, personally, happen to adore men with facial hair -- except for the goatee, and especially the goatee with a shaved head. At no time in my life did I ever think men were slaves to fashion until this particular fad hit. That said, I've known one man who wore one for what I'd consider a legit reason: his step father wore one, and he worshiped that man, so. . .

I personally want to thank the women who insist of clean shaven: it leaves *so many of the great ones* for those of us who demand neither direction, lol! I've talked to a number of bearded guys from PoF who were asked *at first face to face* if they'd be willing to shave off a beard of half a life time? Wassup with that girls? My hunny's had a full (and gorgeous, I might add) beard since his twenties. I don't believe he'd even know it was him in the mirror without it.

OPie, do as you like. I 'spect the right lady is NOT going to ask you to shave it. . . .

Who gives a rat what other women think about your facial hair..? The one woman you might be concerned with is the one currently in your life and even then...if she cant handle your style....well.........need I say more......find a woman that will accept you for who you are.I think a woman when confronted with a similar question {remember now..your talking about people over 45 who are more than likely set in their ways} would tell you to piss off if you did not like her choice of hairdo.Dress for yourself and not for the whim of others. Well, to start with we are women not girls who know what our personal preferences are. I wouldn't go on the first meet and greet with someone who had facial hair. I agree that asking someone to shave just isn't acceptable.

I often wonder if a lot of women have never had a relationship with a clean shaved man, so they don't know how enjoyable kissing and cuddling without being overwhelmed by facial hair is. I know I could never go back to the facial hair discomfort.

With some people having someone in their life is more important than being really comfortable physically with that person. After a while things start to annoy them such as the facial hair issue and they are off to the next relationship.

I personally don't think the same rules apply to everyone.
I have seen men over 45 that look very good with no hair facial or otherwise.
I have also seen guys that look good in moustaches and beards that were over 45.
I will have to say that moustaches sometimes hide those lines above ones lips.
I do think that if you have grey in your beard than it looks better tight to the face and not with a bunch of kinky greys sticking out of the sides.
either way this isn't a deal breaker its hair.

men in my life have been bearded, stached, and bare faced.
I love silver facial hair (swoon), and any other combo if neatly manscaped.
to be truthful, stubble rubs me the wrong way. lol

as far as whether sporting some is youthful or aging, I can't answer that unless I've seen them in both conditions--hairy and bare! kind of hard to compare if I have nothing to compare a before and after with.

I draw the line at the Geico Caveman.

It's the eyebrows that get me, seems as if some of them are about as bushy as a moustache, waxing and trimming really helps with that scenario.

i think it is a personal preference, both yours and the lady's. I happen to like facial hair, both mustache and beard, but again am far more concerned with the person inside and how happy he is with himself, then pick away at his looks.
Makes you older or younger, not sure about that, but it does add character, that could be very pleasing.....then again there are people who look better without, then with.
Personally i do not think it should be a deal breaker, as the woman who wants to create a perfect image of a man for herself, likely will be picking at you for other things that are really neither here nor there...its a one upmanship "proove that you love me by doing or not doing such and such"

I've been with men who shave their facial hair, men with mustaches only, men with mustaches and soul patches, men with Van Dykes and men with full beards. All have been well groomed. I find a man who shaves regularly but then skips a day or two, his stubble is MUCH more irritating than a man's well-groomed and trimmed bed or goatee. Generally, once the mustache and/or the beard have grown out, it isn't irritating. Stubble is what is irritating.

Full beards generally make a man look older, whereas, to me, goatees and Van Dykes can vary. To me, it's up to the man... if he prefers to have facial hair, terrific. If he decides to shave, that's fine too. It's his face and he should do what makes HIM feel better about himself.

Some men look good with facial hair, some look good without, some men look funny when they shave, some men look funny when they grow facial hair, etc. But I always think it makes a man look older with it. I have seen before and afters and usually the afters they look younger, not always better just younger.

I totally agree. I have been fortunately enough to have only had relationships with men who cared enough about how they felt about themselves and they shave either once or twice a day. Their choice, and my pleasure.

Trimmed facial hair makes me feel itchy just looking at it, never mind having it rubbed on my face.

"Generally, once the mustache and/or the beard have grown out, it isn't irritating."

It is to me.

"Stubble is what is irritating."

Both are irritating - stubble more so. Much easier for me to stay away from either, and only cuddle up to clean shaved. My man comes out of the bathroom after showering and shaving - looks, feels and smells like I need to get closer. What a turn on.

I have never met a guy that I thought looked attractive with a monstrocity oops sorry moustache under their nose... and I never realised how many Americans wear them in such an outdated way. Not my thing... thank god for freedom of choice. My ex bf had one when we got together swearing it was there forever till he decided in a moment of bravery to shave it off and has never looked back... it took 10 years off him!

I used to prefer the moustached (sp) face over the one with no facial hair, but find myself preferring the clean shaven look more now than ever before.

Even a neatly trimmed beard can add years to a man's face.

Handlebar moustaches!! WTF!!!!
Moustaches that hang over the upper lip?!! Not attractive to me at all!!

As some of the other ladies have already mentioned, a day or two's worth of stubble can make for an unpleasant experience when being kissed.

Well, I do have a moustache and goatee, and I like to keep it trimmed fairly short. I have the pepper in the moustache and salt in the goatee. I've received compliments on it at times, but it is a personal preference for both men sporting it and women viewing it. Personally, I've struggled with the decision in shaving the goatee, and I still do every now and then. Does the silver goatee make me look older? Defiinitely, yes. The moustache is not optional - it's staying - as I would indeed feel naked without out.

I think it varies from person to person. If man's hair has its original colour but the facial hair is grey(ish) it may make him look older but this is a generalization. Personally, I like facial hair. No such much a mustache .... I prefer a beard or a nice goatee but it must be neatly trimmed. Overgrown facial hair is a major turn off.

This was / is my problem: still relatively brown hair and a grey beard & moustache. It made me look 20 years older. It also made me look like my dad, not am image I desired. So, a decade or so ago off it went - 20 + years gone in a few minutes.

I grew it back a year and a half ago to screw around with DMV: 3-4 months of untrimmed growth prior to ID photo. There is probably some law that says I should get photo retaken, but ... Played around with various trimmed styles after that but they all looked wrong, compared to how I viewed myself.

In general I agree with most posts that indicate well groomed facial hair looks good and the discussion of older or younger really depends on the person. When reading this I reflected on all men and women's grooming 'looking their age' or not. I don't wish to divert the discussion too far off track but I will say that a young(er) man usually wants facial hair to make himself appear older. When one gets to 45 or so other aspects of the body and mannerisms indicate age so facial hair isn't necessary to make the point.

About 10 years or so ago we may have been having this discussion of men that had those little ponytails.

As a man I look at women's styles and if they are age appropriate. Again, not to say a particular hairstyle looks right or wrong but I have seen many women that make the same fashion faux pas as well. Just as a young girl wears a slinky outfit or too much make-up to make herself appear older, a woman of 45+ may need to rethink her teenager fashions she mistakenly believes makes her look younger. I think women near my age and older are very sexy and I welcome their many fashions and styles however I have even heard women say about others 'can you believe she's wearing that?' or 'doesn't she know how that look is wrong for her?'

I am clean shaven with a full head of hair but I still don't groom myself as I did 20 years ago.

I guess it's up to you isn't it your face after all. Personally, I love facial hair on a man, have no idea why, but I've also dated clean shaven too, they just don't turn my head as fast as the bearded one. As far as looking younger or older, why do you care if someone is really into you and they lied about their age, and you were into her, would you dump her even though she looks much younger than she is. I know this has nothing to do with hair, but the are thousands of us out there getting ready to turn over the BIG one, personally I prefer younger men, they are more fun and they want to learn how to please a woman. They don't mind asking and I think that alot of people our age are still intimidated to say hey baby get on your knees and blow me I just had a bad day at work. Not all women would do it, but you might be surprised what "conversation" will bring up (no pun intended) anyway this has nothing to do with facial hair...

To all

My thoughts are who cares whether they look younger or older with facial hair, men, I love a man who has a full beard and mustache well kept. That would be like telling a woman she has to have long hair.

Men fall all over women with long hair..............lesson is that some men go for long hair with a passion and some women go for clean shaved with a passion/man with facial with a passion. We all have preferences, and have the right too. Nothing personal. Just what we are and are not comfortable with.

Facial hair is not my favorite. Now, a well groomed soul patch or goatee can look nice.

Or it can remind me of my ex, which isn't a good thing, in a general sense.

Honestly, every face is different and some guys seriously NEED some hair. If you wonder and have some pictures of you without one, take the picture and yourself somewhere and ask some women what they think.

Or post 'em here!
