ok techies.... I finally sat down to download firefox on my old Windows Me computer then tried to copy it to a cd and this is popped up;

Cannot create or replace Firefox Setup 3.5.2 Access is denied
Make sure the disk is not full or write- protected
and that the file is not currently in use

now what????

no date for you don til this computer issue is fixed .. at least!

Firefox 3.5.2 system requirements state it needs Windows 2000 and above.

You may need to download an earlier version in order to get it to work.

Try

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

3.0.12 first, if that fails then you'll have to track down version 2.x, which according to other forums, works the best with Windows ME.

Does your old computer have a cd burner?

I'll leave this one for don since he's the one going to get the date.

Wow, you're really making me work for this one...lol

For burning to a CD,
I'm thinking it's a good chance that you have a CD ROM drive(read only), not a CD R/W drive(read/write)

I think the best way to go is with a usb flash drive but if you're sure your computer is capable of burning CDs and it doesn't want to work, try this:

(this one is free but not absolutely sure it will work w/Windows Me)
http://download.cnet.com/CDBurnerXP/3000-2646_4-10409086.html
-or-
(this one gives you a 15 day free trial and if you can burn cd's w/your drive, this should work)
http://download.cnet.com/Cheetah-DVD-Burner/3000-2646_4-10238561.html

>It's also possible that you are trying to burn to a full disk.
and I think the best way to go is with a usb flash drive, just drag & drop the files you want into it

for getting the bad stuff off of it,
http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts12938995.aspx

and here is a recap:

1. Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
-or-
Avast Direct Download:
http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe
(During the install it will ask you if you want to schedule a "boot scan"...say 'Yes')

2. Firefox

-or-

After that you should be okay to get your windows updates
&
Download some Antimalware apps:
Malwarebytes
SuperAntiSpyware
Spybot
Whatever you like
&
remember to register your Avast with your email address for a free year subscription
&
Uninstall your previous antivirus (you should only use 1 antivirus....but multiple antispyware is okay

You can stick that tongue back in and roll up your sleeves....

I went and got a friend to send the lastest firefox to me on the broken computer via msn messenger which, as I said, is the only thing working on it. It wouldn't work!
Said it was not set up to establish a connection on port "World Wide Web service (HTTP) " with this computer
Said that it was firewall/ proxy protected. I turned off my firewall since I had Norton on but still couldn't get through.
Now what?

I'm thinking get a Vista disk and reformat as an easy route out to fix this??
btw
if i do fix it.. no soup for you!

Awww....lol, no soup ?

Formatting & reinstalling Vista goes pretty quickly, that is definitely a good option & it will give you a fresh start to install a good antivirus & good anti-malware apps so you don't have the problem again.

If you want try to save it,
You may want ask your friend to send you the full install of Avast (about 35mb)
Install it, disconnect from the Internet (During the install it will ask you if you want to schedule a boot scan ...say "yes")
http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe

When you reboot, it will scan & ask what you want to do w/the viruses/rootkits/etc... say "rename" -or- "quarantine"
(30minutes-2 hours...may be better to format & reinstall)
Then Firefox should install & you should have full access to the Internet

There are a couple things that come to mind with what could be happening here.

1) Your computer is not setup for Dynamic IP Addressing.
2) Your computer is setup for proxy connections. (Although with firefox producing a similar error, I doubt this is the case unless it is option #3)
3) Norton is using a proxy protocol driver attached to your network card's protocols.

First would be to check to see if you have a valid ip address coming from your setup.

I am going to assume you have a modem > router > pc setup.
- If this is the case, you would be getting an ip address similar to: 192.168.X.X

Click on the Vista Start Button, then click RUN and type: CMD

If you don't see RUN there, you'll have to add it by going to the control panel > taskbar and start menu, click on start menu again, and then click customize, navigate to the RUN command and place a check box by it.

After you get into the command prompt, type: ipconfig /all

You are looking for your IP Address which should be under the Local (or Wireless) Area Connection adapter.

It should read: 192.168.x.XXX

If it doesn't, it could mean a few different things, post here or msg if it shows different.

After you have done that, the next step would be to check to see if you could actually ping websites through a non-browser interface.

To do this type: ping google.com

It will run a ping test of 4 send/reply messages. If you see a response to all four of them, great, that means your computer is connected to the internet AND is able to talk to the website, which narrows the problem down to two things: 1) Your network settings or 2) your software firewall product.

If you are able to ping google.com, great, proceed to step b. If not, proceed to step a below.

Go into the control panel, click classic view on the left side if not already selected (makes it easier), Next click Network and Sharing Center. After that you'll want to click on "Manage network connections" on the left hand side.

Right click on your connection type and click properties.
- If hardwired, select Local Area Connection.
- If wireless, select Wireless Area Connection. (or something like that).

Where it says "This connection uses the following items:"

a)
Click on Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and then hit Properties
--- Depending on your network setup (most likely its going to be that you have a modem, then a router, and then your computers behind it, in which you should automatically obtain an ip address from the router) make sure it is set to obtain an IPv6 address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
--- Do the same for Version 4.

--- If you notice that there is a checkbox for "Use the following IPvX address, you should probably change it back to obtain automatically and this might solve your problem.

Once this is checked, and you're setup for dhcp, go back to the command prompt window and type: ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew after.

If you get a new ip address which is like 192.168.x.x, great, if not, what do you get, if anything?

b) Check to see if there is anything in there that says "Norton" or "Symantec", if you see something like that, feel free to disable it to do a quick test. Doing so may require you to restart.

ANOTHER OPTION:

If you wish to do so, you can chose to disable everything on startup and then boot clean into Windows for testing purposes to see if there are any software conflicts. To do this you would want to click on the Vista Start Button, then click RUN (see above if you don't have the RUN command to choose from) and type: msconfig

Once in msconfig, click on the Startup tab and select: DISABLE ALL, then click apply and restart. This will allow you to disable any software starting up when windows loads. I use this a lot to start troubleshooting software related issues.

Anyway, I had a similar problem when I used Kaspersky Internet Security Suite several years back. After that horrible experience, I'll never use software-based firewalls again. Hardware all the way :)

Don't leave yourself completely unprotected.

At least have the antivirus enabled or get a new one that is anti-virus only.

The firewall thing, if you're behind a router, there really is no need for a software firewall for the most part as long as you are computer security conscience.

well, you can allocate a "TrueCrypt" partition and store your sensitive data there. Keep a portable hard-drive handy to move your truecrypt partition onto that while your PC is being serviced.

trusting your techies is your call though. from experience, the novelty of looking at another's personal files/photos wore off after 2 months of working in a corporate setting. Heck, cracking is very boring in my opinion. it's kinda like working in AT&T's central office, you can plug into a switch and eavesdrop on people's conversation, but that novelty wears off as well because people talk about the same a*s sh*t.

Ok...lol, not sure what pie entails but it doesn't sound bad
Yeah, Norton & McAfee are bad news. Their 'Trial Version'comes pre-installed on just about every new PC these days and sometimes they are a bear to get rid of ...I've heard it said that their best product today is the removal tool...lol (and I agree) They cause more problems than they fix.

Anyway, Congratulations on your Fix...Props N3T K1LLA!

Windows password can be cracked in mere seconds.

If you don't trust them don't take it back to them.

Get the advice of a good repair shop from friends or the geeky guy at work or even the IT manager.

Check the BBB for bad listings.

PC's are cheap enough, just buy a new one when your old one gives up the ghost and donate your old one to a worthy organization.

Only trust someone you have known for a long time that is in the business.. otherwise buy a new one - Or if you really don't use your machine for anything (yes amazingly there are some people like that) then use a referral for your repair.
Your really best bet is to sit with them while they repair it, watch what is going on most programs are pretty easy to understand if you read your screens and pay attention.

Ubuntu:
http://www.ubuntu.com/

What is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a community developed operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. Whether you use it at home, at school or at work Ubuntu contains all the applications you'll ever need, from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools.

Ubuntu is and always will be free of charge. You do not pay any licensing fees. You can download, use and share Ubuntu with your friends, family, school or business for absolutely nothing.

We issue a new desktop and server release every six months. That means you'll always have the latest and greatest applications that the open source world has to offer.

Ubuntu is designed with security in mind. You get free security updates for at least 18 months on the desktop and server. With the Long Term Support (LTS) version you get three years support on the desktop, and five years on the server. There is no extra fee for the LTS version, we make our very best work available to everyone on the same free terms. Upgrades to new versions of Ubuntu are and always will be free of charge.

Everything you need comes on one CD, providing a complete working environment. Additional software is available online.

The graphical installer enables you to get up and running quickly and easily. A standard installation should take less than 25 minutes.

Once installed your system is immediately ready-to-use. On the desktop you have a full set of productivity, internet, drawing and graphics applications, and games.

whats with "ubuntu?"
a few people i've talked with in the past couple of weeks have installed ubuntu operating systems on their pcs.

Ubuntu is a user-friendly version/distribution of Linux. It is an Operating System like Windows and has much of the same functionality as Windows (with option to add more)
>Like a bullet-proof Windows and a bag of chips......w/some potato salad & kosher dill pickle on the side(the pickle is optional)

what's the advantage, if any, of ubuntu over windows?......

Cost:
Free

Security:
I don't think there are any viruses currently 'in the wild' for Linux (that includes Ubuntu). Malware for Linux exists but is very minimal and most things just bounce off of you. It is more secure by default than Windows and has an excellent firewall built into the kernel (kernel=brain/core) and only basic services/ports are enabled/open (very few ways to break in) ....In other words, by default it's very secure.
>Basically, the only thing you need to do is update it when it says updates are available -or- set updates to install automatically without confirmation
>I also recommend using a couple Firefox Add-ons for added security but aren't necessary (I'm just more concerned about security than the average person)
-Optional Add-ons: NoScript(prevents scripts from running unless you tell it that it's okay & BetterPrivacy (kills the super-cookies that might slow you down)

Updates:
Update your Operating System (OS) and all of your installed applications/software with a single click.
(Windows Update only updates the OS, not Apps. Microsoft Update only updates Microsoft Apps, not the rest of your software)

Updating Everything is important because for every application/program, hackers are writing scripts/finding holes to exploit vulnerabilities in those programs to compromise your machine. Updating some software is helpful but doesn't really protect your machine as a whole.

Stability:
The Linux kernel is extremely stable and it's rare to get a System Crash, BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) like Windows likes to do.
(It's a UNIX-Like Operating System (UNIX has been around a long time, very solid foundation, very logical way of doing things)

Windows likes to re-invent the wheel every time they come out with a new version (or just redo the GUI ;-) because they never had a solid foundation to begin with...so they are always trying to patch & cover flaws so that people don't notice how unstable/insecure it really is...band aids on a sinking ship comes to mind but I know I'm over-exaggerating with that...lol,
It wouldn't be bad if you kept it off of the Internet but ...whatever, MS can do better except they are too focused on selling it, not fixing it.

Programs/Software/Applications:
When you install Ubuntu, all of the common software that the average person uses/needs installs with it.
For the rest of the software you may want or need, Ubuntu has a 'Package Manager' that is like a restaurant menu where you can put a check next to whatever program you want, click "Apply" and like Emeril says "BAM" you got it...Free!
(software packages are usually small and download quickly)

>Tons Of Free Software (The guys that like Linux/*nix don't want to depend on Windows or pay for software so as a result there is a ton of free open source software...including the free/open equivalents to proprietary software)
*Example:
- Sun Microsystems' Open Office is a free full featured Office Suite that is comparable to Microsoft Office
-Pidgin is a universal IM (Instant Messenger) App that supports Yahoo Chat, AOL Chat, AIM, Google Talk, IRC, ......... All in one.
-GIMP (Graphical Image Manipulation Program) is the free/open equivalent to the full version of Adobe Photoshop.
-aTunes & Song Bird are the open equivalent to iTunes and are compatible with your iPod.

Other Stuff
- Comes with many many many drivers built into the kernel and supports a ton of different hardware configurations 'out of the box' (on fresh install)
-Very customizable. Like another poster said, you can make your Ubuntu look and feel just like Mac OS X or even Windows if you want to...the options are limitless.
-The filesystem does not 'fragment' like Windows does so it's not necessary to spend hours Defragmenting your PC
-You don't need to restart after installing software (unless it directly affects the hardware)...Actually, many Linux machines run for years without restarting, the only time they power them down is to blow the dust out of them or do basic maintenance...Other than that, trouble-free and very stable.
-Installs/Runs on older machines and they run like new.(unlike MS OSes in the Microsoft Upgrade Treadmill)

and is it a viable option?.....

Yes, very. (Depending on you & your needs)
Ubuntu can Sasify the needs of many but there are exceptions including:
-Proprietary Software Needs (Windows-Only software)
-Hardcore Windows Gamers
-If your hardware isn't supported yet.
-The willingness to learn it. (it's pretty basic/simple, if you use Windows, Ubuntu shouldn't be too difficult to use on a basic level...advanced functionality requires more knowledge, same as Windows or any other OS.

i presume it would take a lot of getting used to.

Some people catch on faster than others & some people are just not willing/able to learn a new OS for different reasons.
It depends on the individual.

*You can try before you commit
The Ubuntu Desktop CD is a "Live CD" meaning you can boot from it and run Ubuntu on your PC without changing anything on your PC (Runs from the CD and RAM, doesn't need or use your Hard Drive) If you like it, go for it, click 'Install'. If you don't like it, reboot and your PC is exactly the way it was before you put in the CD

Please don't lump all techs in the same barrel ... just like any field ... some are good some are bad. It amazes me how some customers won't even try to find out what is wrong with their pc on their own. There are trillions of site on the 'net - I'm not saying to fix it but at least get some type of perspective on how it works. The techie may not have the time to educate you. Yes, there are bad motherboards but that is usually a last resort - not the first.
